  • Determinants of Non-performing Loans: A Panel Data Approach

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract This paper considers a panel of 80 countries across all continents, over the period 1999–2019, and uses panel generalized method of moments system estimations with data from the World Bank Global Financial Development database, to explain the evolution of the bank non-performing-loans-to-total-loans ratio. The results obtained provide clear evidence that banks with high profitability, benefiting from market stability and located in countries with increasing economic growth are not expected to have high values of the non-performing-loans-to-total-loans ratio. On the other hand, high values of this ratio are robustly associated with an increase of the bank-cost-to-income ratio, market concentration, and bank regulation. The paper also contributes to the literature by assessing the relevance of the level of each country’s income and economic integration. Overall, the results obtained reveal few differences between high-income and non-high-income countries and between Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries and non-OECD countries. However, considering only the years after the onset of the global financial crisis (2009–2019), there is robust evidence that bank regulation contributed to a decrease in the non-performing-loans-to-total-loans ratio, but only in non-high-income countries and non-OECD countries. Finally, the results for all considered panels, clearly show that the promotion of economic growth is always the best way to assure a decrease in the non-performing-loans-to-total-loans ratio, reducing the likelihood of banking losses as well as potential financial crisis.

  • Taking Information Seriously: A Firm-side Interpretation of Risk Factor
           Disclosure

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Information plays a key role in how markets assess a firm’s value. Disclosure is expensive to comply with and to interpret. Narrative information about risks is particularly challenging to evaluate. Though results on the informativeness of narrative risk disclosure are mixed, previous research focuses on the value to investors. However, risk disclosure does more than provide transparency to investors. It also affects firm behavior through an elevated assessment and increased preparation in response to risk. This study takes this active view of risk disclosure by analyzing firm-side effects through multifactor fixed effects regressions of approximately 13,000 firm-year observations from 2015–2018. The robust results show firm performance is correlated with topic models of narrative risk disclosures. These findings support the argument that risk disclosure corresponds to risk management. A firm disclosing cybersecurity risk responds better in the event of a data breach compared to one that has not, despite the firm itself sourcing the information. Overall, narrative risk disclosure both provides investors with useful information and strengthens a firm’s responsiveness. This provides empirical evidence to policymakers and market participants on the value of forward-looking statements even when the news is pessimistic.

  • Impact of Economic Openness on Macro Technical Efficiency in South Asia

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract This study utilized panel data and the stochastic frontier approach based on the Cobb–Douglas production function to estimate macro-level technical efficiency and economic openness as well as to identify the determinants of technical efficiency in South Asian countries over the period 1990 to 2019. Data are from the World Development Indicators of the World Bank and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. The results suggest a 10% technical inefficiency in the region. In addition, they show high efficiency with more foreign direct investment and openness in South Asian countries. The country-specific technical efficiency estimation indicates that Sri Lanka is the most technically efficient country, followed by India and Pakistan, whereas Bangladesh is the least technically efficient country. Furthermore, the study provides robust evidence for the positive effect of macroeconomic openness of foreign direct investment and trade on technical efficiency. The present study provides a future perspective on the country-specific economic strategies in South Asia. In addition, the findings provide important evidence on how macroeconomic policies can affect efficiency and steady growth by examining and identifying the factors that influence technical efficiency in the region. Additionally, the differences between the factors that influence technical efficiency in different countries are discussed by comparing the findings of this study with those of previous studies that have focused on economic openness. This paper presents a view on the status of macro-level technical efficiency. Furthermore, it explores the opportunities for foreign direct investment and export-oriented policies of South Asian countries, which would benefit these nations.

  • Financial Credit and Expansion of the Non-Hydrocarbon Sector in Gulf
           Cooperation Council Countries

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract The Gulf Cooperation Council countries (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates), while heavily reliant on hydrocarbon export incomes, have also witnessed a gradual expansion of their non-hydrocarbon sector, as well as an increase in the diffusion of financial services. Research into the impact of the financial sector credit on these groups of countries' non-hydrocarbon sectors is deficient. This study minimizes this deficiency by investigating if credit provided by the banks promoted the non-hydrocarbon (services, manufacturing and agriculture) sectoral expansion in the Gulf Cooperation Council Countries. The findings reveal robust evidence of a statistically significant and positive effect of credit provided by banks on the expansion of agricultural and services sectors but not the manufacturing sector. The findings also confirm that labour, investment, technology, and international trade are other strong predictors of these sectors' expansion.

  • Estimating Parental Demand for Children’s Screen Time in a Model of
           Family Labor Supply

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract In a novel approach to model the demand for the children's screen time as the result of a parent's optimal labor-leisure choice, the study used a simple model of parental utility maximization subject to the money and time budget constraints to derive Marshallian parental demand functions for two types of child upbringing activities: time-intensive (violin lesson) and time-saving (video games). After the Slutsky decomposition, parental demand for children's screen time was shown to be similar to a Giffen good. Using the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 and Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development data, the wage equation was first estimated based on Heckman’s two-step correction procedure. Then, the total effect of an increase in wage rate on the parental demand for screen time was empirically decomposed into the substitution effect and the income effect. The study findings indicate that the substitution effect is positive, the income effect is negative, and the negative income effect dominates the substitution effect. We add to the existing literature by showing that the empirical findings in the public health and psychology literature can be reconciled with the theoretical predictions of the standard economic labor-leisure trade-off paradigm.

  • Reverse Immigration Effects for Expatriates in Oman During the COVID-19
           Pandemic Shock

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic produced dramatic aftershocks throughout the global labor markets with rapid changes in differential employment opportunities. Labor market disruptions were sparked by the pandemic in Oman, where expatriates live and work. For the first time, the analysis investigates certain hypotheses relevant to the Aspirations-Capabilities framework and whether these hypotheses survive the pandemic exogenous shock. More specifically, testing these hypotheses, the analysis investigates whether the COVID-19 pandemic shock had a negative impact on expatriates in the host country, as well as it identifies heterogeneous effects among different ethnic groups. Using Datastream data, this analysis investigates the sudden drop in ethnic expatriates in Oman using ordinal least squares and instrumental variable estimations. A steeper decline in the expatriate employment rate reflects a disproportionately adverse impact that the initial phase of the COVID-19 pandemic had on immigrant employment. The findings identify substantial ethnic differences when reverse immigratory effects are exhibited.

  • Women’s Employment and Public Spending: A Cross-Country Study

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract The relationships between public spending, employment, and growth are already complex and yet this complexity increases when considering employment disaggregated by gender. This paper analyzes the effects that public spending on social infrastructure (healthcare and education) has on women’s relative employment using a panel dataset of 138 countries from 1995 to 2011. The panel data consisted of publicly-available data from the World Bank’s World Development Indicators, the Educational Attainment Dataset, the International Monetary Fund’s World Economic Outlook Database, and the World Governance Indicators. Employment was estimated under three separate specifications (the female employment rate, the male employment rate, and a measure of gender equality in employment) which were included in a three-stage least squares simultaneous equation estimation. The results indicate that both categories of social infrastructure spending are positively related to women’s relative employment. Furthermore, the process of industrialization, the size of the population, and trade are all negatively related to women’s relative employment. This paper has significant social and practical implications for gender-sensitive public policy discussions by providing empirical evidence in support of healthcare and education.
