Abstract: Cultural Critique provides a forum for creative and provocative scholarship in the theoretical humanities and humanistic social sciences. Transnational in scope and transdisciplinary in orientation, the journal strives to spark and galvanize intellectual debates as well as to attract and foster critical investigations regarding any aspect of culture as it expresses itself in words, images, and sounds, across both time and space. The journal is especially keen to support scholarship that engages the ways in which cultural production, cultural practices, and cultural forms constitute and manifest the nexus between the aesthetic, the psychic, the economic, the political, and the ethical intended in their widest ...            Expression

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Former Vice-President Hamid Ansari said on Wednesday that the present challenge is to uphold the most cherished freedom to express an opinion. As a result, liberals who once championed expansive First Amendment rights are now uneasy about them.At the end of 2014, Perumal Murugan, the Indian author of several extraordinary Tamil-language novels, was temporarily forced into silence through incidents instigated by extremist organizations. Ostensibly, the organizations that attacked Murugan took exception to his descriptions of ritual sexual practices within a temple town in his 2010 novel, Maatorupaakan (translated into English in 2014 as One Part Woman by Aniruddhan Vasudevan), regarding these descriptions as a ...            Neoliberal States

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In a seminal 1969 paper in the field of cultural and welfare economics, Alan Peacock broached the now-classic debate about the economic rationale for state support for the arts (Throsby 2006, 19). Fifty years later, the debate rages on as governments around the world—in particular, those of developing economies—come to recognize the economic value and social utility of culture and seek to foment production, consumption, and export of intellectual property intensive-goods and services (Streeten, 402). In an era of ostensibly decreasing state involvement in national economies, why do states continue to subsidize cultural production while cutting other social welfare spending' This apparent paradox raises the ... • Instituting Thought: Three Paradigms of Political Ontology

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: What is meant by "political ontology," in comparison with any other kind of political theory or philosophy' And how do the two terms relate to each other' In general, ontology is the study of being, open to all its realms. Thus, it involves even politics. This definition does not involve, however, a reduction to a specific domain within the real. Political ontology—at least in the sense that I give it—does not refer to a specific region of being that has to do with politics but to the relation, at the same time more general and intrinsic, which conjugates being and politics. On the one hand, every political thought implies a conception of space, time, the world, and man, which in turn also determines the value of ... Read More

  • Political Ontology and the Dialectics of Democracy

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In his essay "Instituting Thought" Roberto Esposito has provided a characteristically clear and useful typology for thinking through the vexed matter of political ontology. In addition to clarifying three important conceptual paradigms that have traveled under this rubric, Esposito invites us to consider the political stakes of the question through his concluding remarks on democracy. This essay takes up both sides of the discussion. I begin by reconstructing elements of Esposito's original argument and invite further elaboration of certain important conceptual moves made within. In particular, I inquire into the underspecified relationship between (self-) reflection and ontology in his account, or between knowing ... Read More

  • Esposito's Political Ontology: Difference, Conflict and Community

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In his essay "Instituting Thought: Three Paradigms of Political Ontology," Roberto Esposito redefines political ontology as a relation between being and politics that does not subsume politics under an ontology as much as establishes that politics always stands in relation to the question of being. Esposito's interest is in postmetaphysical or postfoundational political ontology. More precisely, he is interested in the relation between politics and being when this relation is one of difference rather than identity. Esposito notes that in Western metaphysical thought the predominant standpoint is that "politics was imagined as oriented, either potentially, or in terms of duty, to certain values rooted in the sphere ... • The Missing Politics of Restitution: Answering Esposito's Triptych of
           Political Ontology

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In his large body of work spanning more than forty years, Roberto Esposito presents an incredible effort to establish a living history of political ideas: actively contributing to the latest debates on community, biopolitics, and postdemocracy as well as showing how these relate to older traditions of political thought. Ever since his first work on the impolitical published in 1988, Esposito has showed a paradoxical relationship to Schmittian and Heideggerian political theory: his project expresses time and again the will to go beyond Schmitt's and Heidegger's conceptualization of politics and to work at establishing new concepts for a new century. And yet Esposito often finds himself entangled in unnecessary ... Read More

  • The Creative Force of Institutions: A Reply to Benoît Dillet's, Vanessa
Lemm's, and Robert Nichols's Responses to "Three Paradigms of Political
           Ontology"

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: First of all, I would like to thank the contributors Robert Nichols, Benoît Dillet, and Vanessa Lemm—together with the editors Cesare Casarino, Maggie Hennefeld, John Mowitt, and Simona Sawhney, indeed—for the intelligence and the commitment with which everyone commented on my essay. These comments identified not only the internal problems of the text but also pushed the argument well beyond the limits of this single text by opening problems and questions that both complicated and enriched it. I responded to some of these comments, especially in relation to Deleuze and Lefort, in the volume actually occasioned by the essay and similarly titled Instituting Thought. Three Paradigms of Political Ontology. The volume ... Read More

  • Surfaces, Subjectivity, and Self-Denial

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: None Like Us begins with a story of familial cleavage. Though he does not explicitly delve into its contours, Stephen Best describes a graduation dinner that reveals (to him) a distance between him and his father. Another attendee describes this separation (on the part of father) as having been born from a conflict between pride and disgust—the father is proud of his son's success, but it also announces an unassimilable difference between the two. Best likens this to an injunction to community within Black studies, which he describes as not only uncomfortable but problematic: "the feeling that I am being invited to long for the return of a sociality that I never had, one from which I suspect (had I ever shown up) I ... • Apartheid's Endless Itineraries

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: For many decades now South Africa has worn the mantle of global exemplarity. During the 1980s, South Africa was, in Derrida's phrase, "racism's last word" (le dernier mot du racisme), a place where European racial thinking had reached its apogee (and, one hoped, its culminating endpoint). Following the collapse of the apartheid regime and the democratic elections of 1994, it became, under the sign of Nelson Mandela, the "rainbow nation": a concrete illustration of the quasi-miraculous overcoming of racial oppression through empathy and forgiveness and a beacon for other nations struggling with violent histories. In recent years, however, even as the burnished image of Mandela has been iconized around the world ... Read More

  • After the Death Penalty

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In 1995, the Constitutional Court of the Republic of South Africa declared the death penalty to be unconstitutional. The judgment and concurring opinions in State v. Makwanyane relied, along with other precedents, on Furman v. Georgia, the 1972 U.S. Supreme Court case that, following a moratorium, brought about an end to executions in the United States, until Gregg v. Georgia opened the way four years later for their resumption under more restricted conditions. The South African justices find noteworthy Justice William Brennan's affirmation, in Furman, of human dignity as a value guiding his concurring opinion. A right to dignity is enshrined in South Africa's constitution (State v. Makwanyane, ¶¶ 57–58). In the ... Read More

  • The Colloquy of Little Book

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Joan Didion once explained the famous calculated brevity of her style by telling The Paris Review that "I always aim for a reading in one sitting" (2006, 77). Didion was clearly echoing Edgar Allan Poe's dictum in "The Philosophy of Composition," where he argued that "there is a distinct limit, as regards length, to all works of literary art—the limit of a single sitting." "It appears evident," Poe claimed, that the proper length for any literary work of art is "about one hundred lines," and in a kind of mathematical proof of his own poem "The Raven," Poe set out to describe the precise poetical effect produced in the duration of that precise one hundred (Poe, 546).The question of length—particularly the relation ...
