  • Determinants of citations in Ecological Economics, 2005 2018

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: M. Ballandonne, I. Cersosimo, C. Fouillet
      Pages: 1 - 17
Abstract: We contribute to the literature studying ecological economics through the lens of bibliometrics by examining the determinants of citations to contributions published in the journal Ecological Economics from 2005 to 2018. We use a negative binomial regression model to examine the influence of theoretically chosen explanatory variables on the documents’ cumulative citation counts. Results show that the cumulative number of citations received is positively related to publishing in a special issue, with an increase in the number of authors, the number of author-provided keywords, the length of the abstract, the number of cited references, publishing with an open access option, and the length of the contribution. Cumulative citations are nevertheless negatively correlated with title length and with the publication of “other” contents (book reviews, corrections, letters, news items, and reprints) as compared to regular articles.

  • Impact of invasive lionfish on macroalgae in coral reef system with
           intratrophic predation

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Anal Chatterjee, Ikbal Hossein Sarkar, Samares Pal
      Pages: 17 - 34
Abstract: The excessive population of macroalgae along with invasion of lionfish (Pterois volitans) in the coral reefs posses a major challenge to their ecosystem. The community shape of coral reef approaches to macroalgae-dominated ecosystem due to aggressive nature of macroalgae. The herbivores fish like parrotfish act as a favourable character in controlling the abundance of macroalgae. The abundance of lionfish play negative impact on parrotfish and decline it’s population growth and disrupt the impact on control of macro-algae growth. In this present article, a macro-algae- parrotfish-lionfish prey-predator in reef system is developed and analyzed. A harvesting term is introduced to control the invasion of lionfish on parrotfish. The model go through a supercritical Hopf-bifurcation when intrinsic growth rate of macroalgae crosses a particular value. Increase in carrying capacity of macroalgae renders the system unstable while intensity of intratrophic predation play a vital role in it’s stabilization. Also, the system switches from stable coexistence to oscillation around coexistence and lionfish free equilibrium for lower and higher harvesting rate of lionfish. The optimal harvest policy is calculated by using Pontryagin’s maximum principle. Numerical simulations are presented to confirm our analytical results.

  • The Advantages of Artifical Neural Networks to Give Length-Weight
           Relations and Comparison of Growth

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Begüm Çığşar, Hacer Yeldan, Deniz Ünal
      Pages: 35 - 48
Abstract: This study has two main purposes. The first one is to compare the performances of Logistics, Gompertz, Schnute and von Bertalanfy models according to the determination coefficient (R^2) and Mean Squared Error criteria, and these comparisons are aimed to be discussed in terms of gender. For this purpose 329 female and 319 male individuals’ data on P. Quadrilineatus (Bloch, 1790) which is one of lesepsian species in Turkish marine waters were used. As a result of the comparisons, it was concluded that the best growth model varied on the basis of genders. For example, for male individuals Gompertz is the best growth model with highest R^2 (0,745) and the lowest Mean Squared Error (0,717) values. For females, Schnute and von Bertalanffy models have the best results with the highest R^2 (0.813) and the lowest Mean Squared Error (0.369) values. The second purpose of this study is to make comparisons regarding the use of Artificial Neural Networks and Linear Regression Method to determine the Length -Weight relationships. Comparisons are made according to R^2, Mean Squared Error and Mean Absolute Percentage Error criteria. Although the results of these criteria are very close to each other, it can be said that the results obtained for Artificial Neural Networks are slightly better for overall data. The use of Artificial Neural Networks is more convenient since it is a faster and less annoying (does not need transformation) method compared to Linear Regression Method, especially in length-weight estimation for Pelates quadrilineatus (Bloch, 1790) species.

Abstract: Krishi upaj mandi has played a very important role in the marketing of agricultural commodities products. Which have also improved the economic structure of the farmers. The agricultural products are directly and indirectly related to marketing functions. The processes of economic activities are completed with the completion of the marketing process. The mandi is well sound developed the organization structure and the marketing committee is well regulating the market of the working of the mandi. In the mandi also administrative staffs are well sound and staff provide the service to the farmers and licensures for the functionaries, they are fully satisfied to farmers because they provide duty well and functionaries. When we talk the number of farmers trend, the trend of farmers arrival are increasing means the number of farmers is rising with time and farmer are taking interest to sale their produce in mandi yard, there are also increasing trend found of marketing functionaries except for hammal and weigh men. In mandi storekeeper and hammal do not want work whole year.

  • Valuing Fishing Access on Lake Victoria’s Winam Gulf: A Hedonic
           Pricing Model

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Rex W. Sitti, Robert P. Berrens
      Pages: 62 - 85
Abstract: Economic values for fish access and water quality of lake resources can help validate and prioritize conservation measures, facilitate natural resource planning efforts, and inform benefit-cost analyses of improved fishing projects. This research uses the hedonic pricing method (HPM) to investigate values for proximity to major fishing docks, and a composite water quality measure, in the Winam Gulf area on Lake Victoria in East Africa. HPM statistically decomposes variation in owner-occupier housing sale prices and separately in rent prices to isolate marginal implicit prices for the access and quality measures. The analysis uses the 2012/2013 Kenya National Household Survey (KNHS), and a water quality index measured for 12 major fishing docks on Winam Gulf in Kenya. ArcGIS is used to measure the distance from fishing docks to the center of sub-locations. Log-linear econometric modeling results indicate that closer proximity to fishing docks positively affects property values by $1804.24 per kilometer for housing sale prices and $854 per kilometer for annual house rent prices. Although reductions in composite water quality are a rising concern in the Winam Gulf region, water quality is not yet capitalized in either house sale prices or rental rates.

  • Influence of fear in a ratio-dependent predator-prey model

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Nijamuddin Ali
      Pages: 86 - 97
Abstract: Modelling of predation process of an eco-system becomes closer to the existent situation when response of both the species is believed in the modelling process. Ratio-dependent functional response is one of them. In this article, a prey-predator model is thought with fear effect for prey and ratio-dependent Holling type II functional response predation development. The crucial mathematical features of the proposed model are analyzed with the help of equilibria, stability analysis, and bifurcation theory. The parametric space under which the system enters into a Hopf-bifurcation has been investigated. Explicit formula for determining the stability of bifurcating periodic solutions is driven by using normal form and central manifold theory. Our analytical findings are performed by numerical experiments. Biological implications of the analytical findings are talked about in the conclusion section.

  • Globalization and the Nordics Environment: New Insight from Quantile
           Autoregressive Distributed Lag (Q-ARDL)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: O. B. Aworinde, J. O. Badmus
      Pages: 98 - 120
Abstract: This study investigates the possibility of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) in four NORDIC nations (Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden) while accounting for the role of globalization on their environments. This study utilized the recently developed Quantile Autoregressive Distributed Lag (Q-ARDL) model for the period of 1970Q1-2018Q4. The findings of this approach unveil the existence of the inverted EKC phenomenon for Denmark, Finland, and Norway in the long run while U-shaped EKC holds for Sweden. In addition, there is evidence that overall globalization improves the environment of the four Nordic countries in the short-run and long-run periods. Therefore, this study recommends that the government of these countries should continue to adopt energy-efficient environmental policies to promote a green growth environment. Also, the government should maintain and propagate the continuous improvement of green growth methods through the provision of cleaner energy projects.

           Findings from Tamil Nadu

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: A. Kannan, T. Jeyanthi
      Pages: 121 - 130
Abstract: The present research paper is entirely based on primary data which was collected from a single village located in Pudukkottai district of Tamil Nadu. Moreover the present study attempts to estimate the extent to which the rural poor, in general and the people living in below poverty line (BPL), in particular benefit from CPRs. The collected primary data have been classified into two categories such as the people living in below poverty line (BPL) and those living in above poverty line (APL) based on the New Poverty Line Report, 2014. Based on data collected from 295 households, the study reveals major contribution of CPRs towards income and employment generation for the people living in below poverty line in the selected sample village. Around 68.1 percent of the households completely depend on CPRs for their daily livelihood requirements as far as the study village is concerned. Compared to the private sources, the CPRs accounted for 51.5 percent of the BPL households and 13.2 percent of the APL households for fuelwood collection. It finds that per household per year income derived from CPRs estimated at 11.5 percent to total income of the families. It accounted that 16.8 percent of the income to the total income of the BPL households and 6 percent of the income to the total income of APL households has been derived from CPRs.
