  • The Implication of the Beliefs and Practices of the Calinga of Northern
Luzon, Philippines to Indigenous Peoples Education

    • Authors: Rockangel Jamoral, Agnes S Reyes
Abstract: ABSTRACT: The study attempts to identify, describe, and document the beliefs and practices in the life of the Calinga in San Mariano, Isabela across the different life stages from birth to death, and its implication to indigenous education. Ethnographic research method and participant observation as technique were utilized in data gathering with the assistance of the NCIP (National Commission on Indigenous People) in the conduct of conference and disclosure, and output validation. Full immersion period was done for half a year. Findings based on the observations, immersion, interviews, and documentary analysis of data about the Calinga revealed that there are important socio-cultural beliefs and practices attached in each life stage that are unique from other ethnic groups. Unfortunately, these socio-cultural identities were gradually vanishing, due to the advent of modernization. To preserve their heritage, this paper is of great help to understand their culture better and sustain their viable cultural practices through indigenous education. Educators and policy makers should use this study in educational reforms, crafting resolutions and programs for the preservation and conservation of their culture. The younger Calinga generation should imbibe more appreciation for their culture and urge them to continuously practice it and revive their fading cultural identities for posterity.KEY WORDS: Beliefs; Practices; Indigenous; Education.   About the

  • Inscription of Surau Baitannur in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, Indonesia

    • Authors: Muhamad Tisna Nugraha
Abstract: ABSTRACT: Surau Baitannur inscription is a written charter or inscription from a place of worship, called “surau/langar” (small mosque), the oldest ever built in the Pontianak Sultanate. This inscription is insofar as the literature review has never been studied scientifically, and has not received particular attention to become one of the objects of cultural heritage that must be preserved and protected. For this reason, the study of Surau Baitannur inscription was then selected using historical research methods to test and analyze and answer the six basic questions of historical research related to the substance and information contained in the Surau Baitannur Inscription, namely what, when, where, who, why, and how. The results of a review of the Surau Baitannur inscription revealed information that Surau Baittanur inscription is a legacy from the Pontianak Sultanate during the first Sultan's reign, namely Sultan Syarif Abdurrahman Alkadrie. The Surau Baitannur inscription was established on Sunday, 29 November 1801 AD (Anno Domini). The Surau Baitannur building is the oldest place of worship, even when compared to the construction of the Sultan Syarif Abdurrahman Alkadrie’s mosque. The ornament and substance contained in the surrender of Baitannur are full of Islamic values and local wisdom. The use of colours characterized it as Malay heritage, and the dedication substances in the form of treatises or advice as characteristic of the teachings of Islam.KEY WORDS: Inscription; Surau Baitannur; Pontianak; West Kalimantan.About the Author: Muhamad Tisna Nugraha is a Lecturer at the Faculty of Islamic Education and Pedagogy, Pontianak State Institute of Islamic Studies, Ministry of Religion Affairs, Jalan Letjen Suprapto No.19, Pontianak City 78121, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. • When Water Makes Civilization: The Role of Rivers in Bangka Island in the
           XVIII-XIX Century

    • Authors: Johan Wahyudhi, M Dien Madjid
Abstract: ABSTRACT: This study aims to find the contribution of rivers in the formation of human civilization. This study examines the role of rivers in Bangka Island around the XVIII-XIX century. The method used to analyze the data found is social history, especially regarding the social changes that were influenced by the activities of the migrants on this island. The results of this study indicate that the river in Bangka Island is the main route used as a medium for the movement of people and goods, which are transported by ship. The existence of the island of Bangka, which is close to the open sea, allows the arrival of the pirates who control this island. They were expelled by Panglima Sarah, a commander from Johor, Malay Peninsula and Hulubalang Harimau Garang from Minangkabau, West Sumatera. These two figures were subsequently involved in the development of the Islamic community in Bangka Island. Rivers in Bangka Island create also an aquatic life that drives various social changes. The encounters of local residents with migrants form an understanding of how a culture of hospitality should be formed and strengthened. The presence of Chinese elements in Bangka Island culture, for example, is evidence of the local community's acceptance of immigrant culture.KEY WORDS: River; History; Migrants; Collaboration.  About the

  • Dynastic Politics: The Culture of Regent’s Appointment in the Past
           and Present Java, Indonesia

    • Authors: Retno Winarni
Abstract: ABSTRACT: This article studies on the dynastic politics in the appointment of Regents in past and present Java. The past means the era before Indonesian independence in 1945, while the present era is the era after Indonesian independence (1945-1968), especially the New Order era (1968-1998) and Reform era (1998 to date). A comparison will be made about dynastic politics from time to time. The method used is a historical research, including heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The result of this study is that in the era of pre-Indonesian independence (Dutch colonial government), dynastic politics was implemented by appointing Regent candidates from the descendants of Regents or other bureaucratic elite families. This policy was carried out in because it hoped the Regent candidates came from good descendants. They had been raised as officials, so that they can be accepted by the community. The candidates who would be appointed as Regents should have been suitable with the qualifications demanded by the modern bureaucracy. To execute, it was choosing candidates who were educated and experienced in the government bureaucracy. In addition, they must have come from reputable noble families. On the other hand, the dynastic politics at the era of post Indonesian independence (1945 to date) was not only based on descent, or blood relations, but also business networks and interest groups.KEY WORDS: Dynastic Politics; Regents of Java; Past and Present Era.About the Author: Dr. Retno Winarni is a Lecturer at the History Department, Faculty of Humanities UNEJ (University of Jember), Jalan Kalimantan No.37 Jember City, East Java, Indonesia. • Implementation of the Independent Learning Concept in Understanding
Contemporary and Controversial History in Indonesia and Malaysia

    • Authors: Suwirta Suwirta, Nana Supriatna, Ismail Ali
Abstract: ABSTRACT: Learning History in schools requires new paradigms and practices that enable history teachers and students studying History to have creative and imaginative thinking skills. This article–using a qualitative approach and analytical-descriptive explanation, as well as the results of literature reading, field observations, and FGD (Focus Group Discussion) with History teachers from Indonesia and Malaysia–examines Creative Pedagogy, an art of teaching which offers new perspectives and ways to develop the ability of educators and students involved in History Education to get used to "divergent" thinking. This skill is especially useful in understanding key concepts in the discipline of History, namely: Facts and Interpretation; Evidence and Causality; and Text and Context. The process of learning History, dealing with contemporary events and controversial issues in History Textbooks for Secondary Schools, must free educators and participants from the confines of an uncreative tradition. Finally, the ability to remember and memorize must be accompanied and developed with creative imagination and elaboration abilities, and must be taken into assessment of the process and results of History learning.
