  • Does ''' Sometimes Mean 'Rule, Power' in the
           Bible'

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: poj@peeters-leuven.be
Abstract: Ever since the mid-twentieth century publication of the Ugaritic texts and the discovery that the noun <i>drkt</i> in certain contexts means 'rule, dominion', a few biblical scholars and major translations have claimed that Hebrew <i>derek</i>, ordinarily 'way, path', can in some contexts mean 'rule, dominion'. This article assesses fifteen instances of the claim, finding that six biblical occurrences of ''' as 'rule, deed of power' seem certain, two uncertain, and seven unlikely. As criteria for assessment, the article makes use of parallelism, context, dictionaries, word studies, LXX, and acceptance by major English, French, and German translations.

  • 'Powers' in Rom 13,1-7

      Authors: poj@peeters-leuven.be
Abstract: This paper seeks to add a new perspective to the vexed question of whether the words '''''''' or '''''''' in Rom 13,1-7 refer to angelic beings or Roman magistrates. Instead of adjudicating the debate one way or another, literary analysis is used to show how the polysemy of such vocabulary is put to profit in order to advance the rhetorical aims of the passage.

  • The Literary Structure and Meaning of Psalm 84 MT

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: poj@peeters-leuven.be
Abstract: In response to the present confusion in the structural study of Psalm 84, the article explains that this is a result of the lack of faithfulness to the MT. The Hebrew text of Psalm 84 is composed of three stanzas (vv. 2-5.6-8.9-13), of six, three, and six verselines each, respectively. The three stanzas reflect the stages of a pilgrimage to Zion: from the desire for the temple (I), to the journey across the desert (II), to the prayer raised on the arrival in Zion (III). Considering vv. 9-10 as an integral part of the psalm, the article proposes to identify 'your anointed' (v. 10b) with the worshipper and his people.

  • Absentia Nominum Sacrorum in Libro Iob (Part II)

      Authors: poj@peeters-leuven.be
Abstract: Recently, more attention has been given to the question whether the Septuagint (LXX) attests a theology different from that of the Masoretic Text. In order to contribute to an answer to this question, this article examines the minuses in LXX Job where MT records '' ,''''' ,'''' and ''''. Since these minuses show clear differences between the LXX and MT and since they pertain to the divine name, studying them might shed more light on the translation technique and theology of the LXX translator of Job.
