Abstract: The quotation from Is 53,7-8 in Acts 8,32-33 has a threefold effect. On the level of the plot, the reasons for the innocence and suffering of the Servant mark the development of the narrative sequence of Acts 8,4-12,25. Moreover, the model of the Servant of YHWH makes it possible to recognize in Jesus the figure of the prophet repudiated by the people, but exalted by God. Finally, the Isaian passage is functional to the theological project of Luke that provides for the reception of those who for physical, ethnic, religious reasons (as in the case of the eunuch) were excluded from the Judaism of the Second Temple period.

  • Prototypes and Targumim

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: poj@peeters-leuven.be
Abstract: Defining the targumim has been a contentious issue, largely because of the widely different ways that targumists translate the source text, the Hebrew Bible. This paper utilizes advances in cognitive science, namely prototype theory, to describe the genre, categorizing the targumim in the way that the mind naturally categorizes items. The paper proposes five traits of varying levels of importance that work together with the culturally-conditioned setting of the targumim to form a Gestalt in the mind. This allows for certain targumim to be more prototypical and others to be closer to the fuzzy boundaries of the genre.

  • The '''' in Nehemiah 10

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: poj@peeters-leuven.be
Abstract: The '''' in Nehemiah 10 shares substantial parallels with Neo- and Late Babylonian contracts. Like them it contains a list of the parties to the agreement, a statement that an oath has been taken, and stipulations in the first-person plural. Several features show, however, that the canonical text of Nehemiah 10 is a literary imitation of that tradition. The same conclusion is warranted for an earlier version of the chapter. As examples of post-colonial mimicry, both compositions recall circumstances during the Persian era when the community committed itself to support the temple establishment in Jerusalem under oath.

  • Solomon at Gibeon (1 Kgs 3,4-15; 2 Chr 1,2-13)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: poj@peeters-leuven.be
Abstract: This article reexamines the relationship between the two accounts of the Gibeon Theophany (1 Kgs 3,4-15; 2 Chr 1,1-13). Recently, a growing number of scholars claim that the Chronicler used a different <i>Vorlage</i>, be that a lost source shared with Kings or a different version of the latter, with little to no Deuteronomistic elements. The current study proposes a novel approach to the problem, integrating literary and textual criteria and expanding the discussion to include other related texts in the Solomon narrative in Kings and Chronicles.

  • Die Kleider in Gen 3,21

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: poj@peeters-leuven.be
Abstract: The article shows that the common translation 'tunics of skin' for the garment made by God for 'Adam and his wife' in Gen 3,21 is not tenable. ''''' ''' should rather be translated 'tunics for the [naked] skin [of human beings]'. The vegan ideal of complete non-violence in the Garden of Eden is valid until the end of Genesis 3.
