  • Introduction

    • Authors: Daniela Theinová
Abstract: RISE 4.2 is a festive anniversary tribute to one of Ireland’s most eminent poets Medbh McGuckian. The articles to be found in this issue address McGuckian’s expansive oeuvre through a number of diverse foci. These range from the work’s engagement with political violence during the Troubles and their competing representations in cultural memory; through considerations of the commemorative thrust of individual poems and collections; and questions of knowledge, faith and scepticism; to the prominence of the image and the visual in McGuckian’s poetics. The question of reading is brought up repeatedly in these pages, be it concerned with the reception of McGuckian’s poetry or her writing method, based on the reading of texts by others. In their diverse approaches to the poet’s work these articles demonstrate that while McGuckian’s own art begins with an act of reading, in her act of writing she instructs us in the art of reading.   Keywords: McGuckian, Medbh; Irish poetry; Northern Irish poetry; the Troubles; intertextuality; reading

  • ‘Turning One Sort of Poetry into Another’: Medbh McGuckian’s Captain
           Lavender and the Surface Reader

    • Authors: Richard Kirkland
Abstract: This essay assesses the cultural importance of Medbh McGuckian’s fifth collection of poems, Captain Lavender from 1994, and argues that it is a pivotal collection in McGuckian’s overall achievement marked by a decisive shift in her themes and technique. The essay places the work in the context of the cultural politics of Northern Ireland at the time, focuses closely on the varied contemporary critical response her work received, and explores the degree to which (what has been termed) the ‘surface reading’ model of literary analysis enables some of McGuckian’s poetic preoccupations to be viewed in sharper focus. As a result the essay argues that ultimately the significance of the collection lies not in its turn to an idea of ‘the political’ as an overt subject for poetry (as has been previously argued), but the manner in which this shift enabled a deeper apprehension of the dialectic of self and other and the creative ways in which this could be visualised.   Keywords: Medbh McGuckian, Captain Lavender, surface reading, symptomatic reading, Northern Irish poetry, Northern Irish cultural politics

  • ‘Image of Something Without Images’: Seeing Poems in The Face
           of the Earth

    • Authors: Eric Falci
Abstract: Although the sights and scenes produced are often ones of radical, dazzling estrangement, Medbh McGuckian’s poetry is primarily an art of the eye. The acts of looking and relooking, visualising and envisioning, motivate a great many of McGuckian’s expansive body of poems. By no means the exclusive sensory catalyst for her imagination, sight is nonetheless the central one. The pace of her poems is determined more by their arrangement of images and figures than they are by matters of sound, narrative, rhetoric, or rhythm. The intensely metamorphic quality of those images means that while a reader can rarely settle into a coherent lyric scene or argument, she can often get some purchase on McGuckian’s hermetic texts by tracking a poem’s morphing course of images. The Face of the Earth allows us to see McGuckian’s visual poetics with great clarity.   Keywords: McGuckian, Medbh; The Face of the Earth; lyric poetry; visuality; imagery

  • ‘A Roar of Wings’: Faith, Scepticism, the Sublime in Medbh
McGuckian’s The Book of the Angel

    • Authors: Jefferson Holdridge
Abstract: Medbh McGuckian’s main epistemologies in The Book of the Angel (2004) are aesthetic, religious, and poetic. The critical apparatus of this essay consists of the aesthetics of the sublime and beautiful from the eighteenth century (Edmund Burke and Immanuel Kant) to the present day (Jean-François Lyotard), the aesthete Walter Pater, who heralded the aesthetics of Modernism, and contemporary critics of McGuckian. The essay aims to show how these types of knowledge inform McGuckian’s use of the word ‘angel’ by arguing that the sublime effect of her choice moves along the bifurcation of scepticism and faith. The sublime is a suitable aesthetic for understanding her stance toward the transcendent and the empirical, the spiritual and the sensual, scepticism and belief. Even though she couches so much of The Book of the Angel in the language of religion, any simple interpretation of her poetry as a mere statement of either scepticism or faith becomes complicated. For McGuckian, there is always a force at work in poetry, as in nature, that is more transformative, that awaits the visionary appearance, but its power is as much in the invocation and the waiting as it is in the epiphany.   Keywords: Angels, Sublime, Beautiful, Scepticism, Faith, Art

  • Cultural Memory and Images of Resurrection in Medbh McGuckian’s
           Commemorative Poems

    • Authors: Fanni Fekete-Nagy
Abstract: This article analyses four poems by Medbh McGuckian, all of them commemorating deceased loved ones or historical figures. The essay discusses the poet’s strategies of commemoration from the perspective of cultural memory studies and focuses on the ways allusions in the poems establish parallels with other texts and works of art. The article argues that the interactions between various allusions within these poems imitate the processes of cultural memory and that the connections with pre-existing texts situate McGuckian’s poems among them. By bringing together and reviving earlier approaches to death and grief through allusions, the poet commemorates the deceased by linking their memories to those of mythical, historical figures and artists whose memory already lives on in various forms. Issues concerning the ethics of commemoration are discussed in connection with allusions to historical events while questions about the possibility of consolation are explored through detailed analyses of biblical allusions.   Keywords: Medbh McGuckian, commemoration, cultural memory, allusions, Bible

    • Authors: Maureen E. Ruprecht Fadem; Mary O'Malley-Madec
Abstract: Irish studies scholar Maureen E. Ruprecht Fadem and Irish poet Mary O'Malley Madec met with Medbh McGuckian in June of 2018. Their conversation, lasting the better part of a day, covered a vast array of subject matter. This piece transcribes much of that dialogue, including audio clips for poems they read together that day.

  • Architecting the Carceral State: The Fragment in Medbh McGuckian's
           Diaries and Walter Benjamin's 'Theses'

    • Authors: Maureen E. Ruprecht Fadem
Abstract: It seems important at this point in the conversation on Medbh McGuckian to look at her prose. This article close reads two autobiographical pieces, the diaries ‘Women are Trousers’ (2000) and ‘Rescuers and White Cloaks: Diary, 1968 – 69’ (2001). The focus here is the form: I consider these diaries as diaries, war diaries particularly, crafted through a poetics of the fragment in a close reading in which their performative functionality is contemplated together with contexts, principally the relation to history that founds the diary and the specific era, Ireland’s ‘Troubles’. These texts are not merely remarkable literary achievements but remarkable in being strikingly analogous to Walter Benjamin’s ‘Theses on the Philosophy of History’. While McGuckian names her form, in fact her texts push back on every boundary of it and, familiar from the poems, all expectations of craft and language. All this is true of Benjamin’s text: while we understand the ‘Theses’ to be philosophical writings, they are as abstruse and literary as McGuckian’s. These peculiar, fragmentary texts are generically esoteric and they are so in extraordinarily similar ways. I consider both authors as literary artists in order to suss out the rich and efficacious insights that come in ‘forgetting’, if temporarily, that Benjamin was a philosopher and ‘hearing’ him as the literary artist he (also) was, next to literary artist Medbh McGuckian.   Keywords: The Diary, The Fragment, Prose Poetics, Lyric Prose, The Carceral State, The Angel of History

  • Testimonial ‘Sideshadowing’: The Narrative Hospitality of Medbh
           McGuckian’s Blaris Moor

    • Authors: Jessica Bundschuh
Abstract: In her recent volume, Blaris Moor (2016), Medbh McGuckian becomes ‘facilitator’ of cultural memory in three poems about the Northern Irish Conflict and Bloody Sunday, ‘The Statement of My Right Honourable Friend’, ‘The Questioning of Soldier L’ and ‘Telltale’. Herein, readers encounter a patchwork of eyewitness accounts and interlocking histories with multiple points of agency and dynamic causation. Significantly, these poems refrain from embracing any single history as inevitable; instead, they employ the literary trope of ‘sideshadowing’ to dialogically displace a predictable, closed-off universe. As a result, McGuckian may welcome contingencies and unplottable possibilities, in contrast to a determinism implicit in foreshadowing or backshadowing. This technique is especially useful in artistic responses to the Troubles, since it avoids a teleological historical model that regards tragic events simultaneously as inevitable – the culmination of a long history of suppression – and, contradictorily, as predictable and, therefore, easily avoidable. Lastly, McGuckian’s decision to bring opposing orthodoxies into an unruly dialogue aligns the poet with the museum curator: both construct diverse narratives built out of contested testimonies and historical artifacts and both, thereby, honour the ethics of ‘narrative hospitality’, a cornerstone of ethical remembering in Northern Ireland. Keywords: narrative hospitality, sideshadowing, trauma theory, communal witnessing, Bloody Sunday
