    • Authors: Rosina Martucci
      Pages: 12 - 12
Abstract: The Italian-Canadian writer Mary Melfi is the author of a memoir entitled Italy Revisited: Conversations with My Mother. Published in Italy in 2012, this work represents an anthropological fresco of unexpected depth and richness. It presents conversations between a mother who emigrated to Canada, and a daughter who wants to know her own origins and the story of life in a village of Southern Italy. It brings back a disappeared world set in the context of emigrants searching for their own identity. The writer devotes many chapters to the culinary traditions of her home country. Homemade Bread, Pasta and Beans, the Pork Festival, the Olive Harvest, Tomatoes, Ricotta, the Wine Festival, Homemade Pasta, Easter Bread, Chicory and Biscuits are the titles of the chapters devoted to food, its value and the sense of nostalgia that always accompanies a bygone time now lost forever.

  • Le repas dans "Les Années" d’Annie Ernaux

    • Authors: Stéphane Bailly
      Pages: 12 - 12

Autobiografia e (fast) food

    • Authors: Enrico Schirò
      Pages: 12 - 12
Abstract: In February 2003, Morgan Spurlock, a young and still unknown filmmaker at the time, decided to make a crucial experiment whereby he would eat only McDonald’s food for thirty consecutive days, documenting the symptoms and effects of this extreme diet in film. The result is Supersize Me, an award-winning documentary about the junk-food industry, which was made famous by the paradoxically biographical as well as bioethical personal involvement of the director. Although this work does not belong to the autobiographical genre, it creates a peculiar form of self-narration set between family memories and confessions about food, which allows for an autobiographical reading of the text. The aim of this contribution is to highlight the autobiographical aspects of Spurlock’s extreme diet, which takes the interweaving of self-narration and nutrition as its starting point.

  • Anita Brenner y sus diarios en México (1925-1927). Las dimensiones de
           la comida

    • Authors: Marcela López Arellano
      Pages: 12 - 12
Abstract: The Mexican-born, nationalised American writer Anita Brenner (1905-1974) wrote her diaries in Mexico during the reconstruction after the 1910-1920 Mexican Revolution. She was a friend of the writers and artists of the ‘Mexican Renaissance’ who sought to recover a genuine Mexican identity in history, literature, art and indigenous cultures. In her records, she referred to her research on Mexico, her vision as a modern girl, her gaze on the indigenous people and the events of her time. She also highlighted the food, observing several aspects of it: ethnography, consumption with friends and at work, the desire to look thin. Drawing on the methodology of written culture, this contribution examines how, when writing about food, its spac- es, its meanings, the intimate act of eating constituted part of her political stance as a ‘Mexican’ to which she and her group were committed in their writing about this countr

           genre humain

    • Authors: May Chehab
      Pages: 14 - 14
Abstract: In What We Did to Father (1960), the British writer Roy Lewis traces the history of the birth of humankind, condensing it into the time frame of a life narrated in the first person. The French translation of this first title (Pourquoi j’ai mangé mon père, which would be adopted in more recent editions of the original novel), erases the suspense found in the original while trivialising cannibalism – a classic metaphor for primitivism. It even elevates it to the level of an apologetic discourse that had given birth to the autobiographical genre in modern literature initiated by Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s Confessions. This article examines the novel through the prism of comparative mythology and anthropology, and explores its current environmental implications.

  • Cibi, conviti, culture nell’opera di Carmine Abate

    • Authors: Angelo Pagliardini
      Pages: 16 - 16

           soldati italiani

    • Authors: Fabio Caffarena
      Pages: 18 - 18
Abstract: This contribution aims to highlight how food, the imaginary construct that surrounds it, and hunger recur in personal written testimonies and are particularly effective in allowing for an in-depth understanding of the intimate nature of the experience. Drawing on documents preserved largely in the Archivio Ligure della Scrittura Popolare [Ligurian Archive of Popular Writing], it examines some testimonies produced during the two major divisive events of the contemporary era: the Great Migration between the 19th and the 20th centuries, and the First World War. These events fostered a great flow of written material (letters, postcards, diaries and autobiographical memoirs), which was needed to heal the wounds caused by distance: separation and deprivation, for which food represents a sort of unit of measurement.

  • Introduction

    • Authors: Beatrice Barbalato
      Pages: 36 - 36
