  • Drawing Parallels in Art Science for Collaborative Learning: A Case Study

    • Authors: Karen Westland
Abstract: This research paper explores drawing as a tool to facilitate interdisciplinary practice. Outlined is the personal experience of PhD researcher [name removed] in their physics/craft research project, combined with thoughts and opinions from collaborators gathered through group discursive interviews. Interdisciplinary projects face interpersonal and conceptually ambiguous challenges which can be addressed through adopting drawing techniques for educational purposes. Findings highlight that drawing can assist across a breadth of applications as a learning tool for everyone, regardless of drawing ability, to improve the functionality of collaborative projects. Specifically, drawing combined with other communication techniques develops a performative communicative approach that enriches interaction and empathy between participants. However, challenges exist around inclusion between individuals from different disciplines when adopting drawing as an integrated practice. Overcoming deep-seated beliefs and perceptions of what drawing is facilitates efficient problem-solving in a research context. Examples made in this report signify the benefits of drawing without concern for the quality of drawn renders when the purpose is to share ideas and develop processes. The paper advocates that drawing practice has the potential to build empathy and develop stronger interpersonal relationships between those from different disciplines where verbal barriers exist - a key asset to interdisciplinary practice.

  • Supporting Mathematic Achievement for Students with Learning Disabilities
           Through Enhanced Anchored Instruction

    • Authors: Wendie Lappin Castillo
Abstract: Difficulties in mathematical learning are common and significant. The struggle has increased exponentially with the Common Core State Standards in effect. Students with or without learning or mathematical disabilities may respond to continued failure by withdrawing their effort, carrying low self-esteem, and/or displaying avoidance behaviors. Enhanced anchored instruction is designed to provide students the opportunity to construct knowledge and design solutions to problems collaboratively. The approach of enhanced anchored instruction attempts to guide students to become more active in learning through the use of technology. Enhanced anchored instruction provides students the opportunity to work through problems attached to a visual anchor. These anchors help develop higher-order thinking and contextualized learning. This article discusses the steps to use enhanced anchored instruction to assist students with learning disabilities to improve problem-solving skills and increase mathematical achievement.

  • Literature as a Pathway to STEAM Careers

    • Authors: Michelle Mohrweis
Abstract: In this piece, I discuss the way STEAM focused literature can help guide students into the world of STEAM. Through books, kids can see themselves doing STEAM focused careers, helping to make it more accessible even to groups still underrepresented in many technical fields. STEAM in children’s literature can also help students navigate important skills, such as the design process and learning how to have a growth mindset.
