    • Authors: Cristiane do Rocio Wosniak
      Pages: 1 - 31

memory(ies) of the body in movement

    • Authors: Cristiane do Rocio Wosniak
      Pages: 1 - 31
Abstract: This article intend to think on a singular perspective of historical production of/about dance. It is from an interdisciplinary relationship, which involves dance and cinema, that the documentary A Alma do Gesto (2020) is take as an axis and empirical object of investigation in order to analyze creation processes in a dance company as the production of a narrative memorial on gesture and body in motion mediated by digital technology. This study draws on authors who deal with process criticism, memorial archives, history, documentaries and mise-en-scène as a basis for rethinking and deduce that, here, primary documentary sources are crossed by dance fiction.

  • Orientalism in motion: representations of “belly dance” in paintings
           and travel literature (19th century)

    • Authors: Naiara Müssnich Rotta Gomes de Assunção, Nina Ingrid Caputo Paschoal
      Pages: 1 - 32
Abstract: This article analyses representations of “belly dance” in paintings and travel literature produced by Europeans in the 19th century. Locating this dance in time and space, describing characteristics and subjects that were important for the development of this practice, it analyses its deep relationship with the colonization process in Egypt. We conclude that the dances practiced by men and, above all, by women in the Egyptian territory in the 19th century underwent European filters and interpretations before consolidating in the West as “belly dancing”. This socio political context left visible marks in the way this body repertoire is performed, represented and reputed today.

‘Quebradas do Mundaréu’ e ‘Kuarup...’ do Ballet Stagium

    • Authors: Rafael Guarato
      Pages: 1 - 36

  • Dance, civil-military dictatorship and dance policies in ‘Quebradas do
Mundaréu’ and ‘Kuarup ...’ by Ballet Stagium

    • Authors: Rafael Guarato
      Pages: 1 - 35
Abstract: This article is dedicated to demonstrating that the historiography of dance in Brazil, framing and explaining the works of Ballet Stagium from the social context and subsidized by a dichotomous episteme, culminated in the abandonment of specific dance policies. The objective of the text is to analyze specific political tactics in artistic dance, employed by the company during the 1970s. Therefore, the investigation is dedicated to the works Quebradas do mundaréu and Kuarup ..., in order to restore to them their potential for politicized performance in the context in which they were produced, without being succumbed to the government policy, drawing on historical sources and guided by theories and debates existing in the field of dance studies, cultural studies and political philosophy.

    • Authors: Clara Rodrigues Couto
      Pages: 1 - 32

  • Ballet in writing: precepts and rules of composition for court ballets in
France under the Ancien Régime (1581-1682)

    • Authors: Clara Rodrigues Couto
      Pages: 1 - 33
Abstract: This article seeks to understand the theoretical formulations that throughout the 17th century systematized court ballet as an art, a term defined at the time as a set of precepts and rules. After a brief discussion about the first dance manuals produced in modern Europe, we analyze the treatises, discourses and librettos that addressed ballet composition. From the works of Beaujoyeulx, Saint-Hubert, Marolles, De Pure and Ménestrier, among others, it is possible to appreciate the erudite principles and precepts that guided the practice of ballet composition in France under the Ancien Régime, as well as the inclusion of dance and ballet in the domain of written production and literate culture.

  • Dança, corpo e memória: as três temporadas do Original
Ballet Russe no Rio de Janeiro

    • Authors: Beatriz Cerbino
      Pages: 1 - 29

  • Dance, body and memory: the Original Ballet Russe and its three seasons in
           Rio de Janeiro

    • Authors: Beatriz Cerbino
      Pages: 1 - 29
Abstract: This text presents reflections on studies of history, memory and dance. I start from the field of History and my interest in understanding the role of memory in knowledge production processes. As a case study, I examine the three Original Ballet Russe seasons in the city of Rio de Janeiro, which took place in 1942, 1944 and 1946. During this period, the company was seen as exemplary in its contribution to the building of Brazilian national ballet. I demonstrate how the discourse employed by the local press fueled these ideas. Guided by the methodological procedures of cultural history, I use dance critic Jaques Corseuil’s reviews as key sources.

  • Una mirada histórica crítica de la danza
           moderna/contemporánea en México

    • Authors: Roxana Margarita Díaz Castellanos
      Pages: 1 - 22

  • A critical historical view of modern/contemporary dance in Mexico

    • Authors: Roxana Margarita Díaz Castellanos
      Pages: 1 - 22
Abstract: This article analyzes some historical accounts by researcher Alberto Dallal about stage dance in 20th century Mexico. Three issues are identified in them: 1) the linearity of history and its teleological division between modern and contemporary dance; 2) the incorporation of the Western categories of modern and contemporary into the history of Mexican dance to show its development; 3) the explanation of the origin and the occurrence of the dance through certain exemplary individuals. A discursive critique of history is proposed to avoid linearities and hierarchies, and the coexistence of other expressions overshadowed by the dominant narratives is explored.

    • Authors: Jorge Ramos do Ó, Ana Luísa Paz, Tomás Vallera
      Pages: 1 - 30

  • Genius and aesthetic grace: an archaeology of discourses on dance
           education in Portugal (1839-1930)

    • Authors: Jorge Ramos do Ó, Ana Luísa Paz, Tomás Vallera
      Pages: 1 - 30
Abstract: This article identifies the advent of diagnoses and solutions concerning the goals and procedures of dance education in Portugal, which resulted in the continued advocacy for a Conservatory to come. It detects two moments - the 19th century and the First Republic - during which a discourse built on the natural aptitude vs. universal learning polarity came to prevail. The theatrical dance syllabi created in 1911 were an attempt to end this dichotomy. However, these discursive formations continued to reinforce the notions of aesthetic grace and individualism of the genius, bolstered by the perception that was then cultivated of foreign vanguards (Isadora Duncan and the Ballets Russes).

  • O Ballet Klauss Vianna em Belo Horizonte (1958-1962): caminhos de uma
           modernidade para o balé brasileiro

    • Authors: Arnaldo Leite de Alvarenga
      Pages: 1 - 42

  • The literature that drives the work of Lia Rodrigues

    • Authors: Adriana Pavlova
      Pages: 1 - 29
Abstract: The literature that drives the work of Lia Rodrigues1 - This article presents the readings that inspired the work of choreographer Lia Rodrigues (1956), starting in the 1990s and ending with her 2016 piece, For the sky not to fall. The study lists works of fiction and non-fiction, including literature, philosophy, and anthropology, which served as triggering devices for the works’ dramaturgies, while still not seeking to translate the written word in linear or narrative form into dance. The analysis presents this choreographic unfolding, which eschews a conventional reading, to achieve bodily states in the dancers. The collection of readings is presented in relation to the company’s repertoire, proposing dialogues between text fragments and dance.
