Abstract: This paper describes queros and bowls from the site of Tumilaca la Chimba, Moquegua, Peru. Their elaboration used the system of superimposed rings to gain height, with smoothing, polishing, slipping and surface decoration. The bowls included in funerary contexts show evidence of having been used previously, which is not the case for the queros, which appear to have been produced intentionally and hastily for the funerary rite. We propose that the ceramic styles that post-date the Middle Horizon state processes (500-1000 ad) and derived from Tiwanaku ceramic traditions, owe their technological development to the selective choices of the group, which could have been motivated by social, private, and ancestral settings.

Abstract: This paper takes cervid iconography as an entry into the realm of Tiwanaku (ca. 500-1100 ad) hunting, an aspect that has been overlooked by the dominant archaeological narrative of the agropastoral “Andean State”. We summarize Andean and Amazonian poetics about deer, and describe known Tiwanaku objects with deer imagery. On them, graphic allusions to a power ful breath, and to ferocity and human consumption, as well as to the nocturnal sky, raise metaphors of the Andean glaciers, the Amazonian notion of the deer-jaguar, and the ethics of hunting in relation to animal-owning entities. Our interpretation aims to relativize sharp Andes-Amazon divides, emphasizing mutual influences between both regions in pre-Hispanic times.

Abstract: This paper analyzes the visual representations of pyrographed gourds from the north of Chile attributed to the Late Intermediate Period (1000-1430 ad). The analysis is carried out from a mate rialistic archaeosemiotic approach, relatingPeircean semiotics to categories of the concrete society. A division is identified between the uses of the gourds and forms of sociability in daily-domestic and magical-religious ritual life, and the gourds are conceived as iconographic media that reflect the forms of social consciousness of a dominant group. It is concluded that these funeral objects and their signs not only represent prestige and distinction goods, but also manifest an ideological function regarding power relations, linked to the consumption of fermented beverages and entheogenic substances, and to altered states of consciousness.

Abstract: This workfocuses on the sex scenes found in rock art manifesta tions associated with chullparian structures corresponding to the Late Intermediate Period in the Coranzulí area (Puna of the province of Jujuy, Argentina). By combining archaeological, ethnographic, and historical information, it aims at reflecting on the understanding of gender in the Andes of Jujuy in late pre-Hispanic times, trying to overcome binary heteronormal ized conceptions. This can help broaden the understanding of these scenes beyond strictly biological notions of procreation and human fertility by considering these concepts as acting in a semantic field of reproduction, luck, the multiplying of both livestock and crops, as well as people.

Abstract: This paper presents the results obtained from the historical and archaeological analyses of the indigenous occupation between the southern bank of the Maipo valley and the Angostura mountain range during the Tawantinsuyu period. The main Inca trail, or Qhapaq Ñan, and the Inca royal road to the promaucaes, both of pre-Hispanic origin, are identified. Six population districts are defined. The districts located further north and closest to the Maipo river stand out for the presence of large ditches, while those located further south, adjacent to the Angostura mountain range, show defensive systems and a greater sacralization of the landscape. The article summarizes the current evidence on the human occupation of the southern part of the Inca Province of Mapocho.

Abstract: Key points in space for communication by material means dur ing the last 2500 years in southern Patagonia are studied. The sites with the greatest number of rock art motifs on the Strobel plateau (Argentina) are characterized in terms of four axes: the selected locations, the intensity of rock art production, the variety of information communicated, and the time periods represented. We seek to understand the criteria for the selection of these spaces and the strategies related to the circulation of information during this period of time. The importance of these sites in a wide spatial scale is evaluated, and their relevance for the understanding of the communication circuits among human populations during the Late Holocene is highlighted.

Abstract: In this article we discuss the importance of the socio-musical dimension for the development of its different ritual phases of the Cruz de Mayo Festival. The description and analysis are based on ethnographic information collected during the celebra tion of this festival in the Lluta and Codpa valleys (Arica and Parinacota Region). A distinctive aspect of this celebration, one of the most important festivities of Northern Chile and large part of the South Andean area, is the playing of popular music and sounds in honor of the Holy Cross.

Abstract: In this article, the film analyses o/Retorno a Aztlán, Apocalypto, Alba de América, and 1492. Conquest of Paradise will be used to identi/y several ways in which the conquest o/America is rep resented /rom a variety o/ perspectives on both Atlantic coasts. The study/ocuses on the themes, narrative structures, and/ormal expressions used in these /our films. Thus, the first two films present the Mesoamerican and North American point o/ view, while the other two represent the Hispanic-European perspective. It is concluded that in both continents the cultural contexts o/ precolonial and postcolonial Mesoamerica are used in these films to shape ideological discourses, which are more related to their contemporary reality rather than to the past times they depict.
