Abstract: Tenso’s recent history has been remarkably filled with optimism, given its resources and audience. I want to thank the authors of articles, op-eds, reviews, necrologies, and our regular contributors who do the research for our annual bibliographies and discography, and our loyal readers, whether they choose hard copy or the e-version available through a library subscription to ProjectMuse. The journal receives submissions from all over the world; these are carefully vetted, and, whether accepted or not, these are returned to authors with useful blind criticism, as is our practice. Not all journals follow that important practice. This issue of Tenso carries an underlying theme of translation, seen in various ... Read More

  • Mining the Necropolis: On Reading Guillem de Berguedà

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In his 1861 work De los trovadores en España, Catalan philologist Manuel Milà i Fontanals takes considerable issue with the songs of Guillem de Berguedà1 (fl. 1138–1192):Tan cínicas como las de Guillermo de Poitiers, más sanguinarias que las de Bertrán de Born, las composiciones de este odioso personaje no deben salir en gran parte de lo más recóndito de la necrópolis científica, al paso que, por su no escaso interés histórico y especialmente literario, demanden el más completo examen que su naturaleza permite. Es de notar por otra parte que por la oscuridad de sus alusiones y de alguno de sus pasos, y sobre todo por el silencio de la historia, ofrecen dificultades de interpretación, acaso insuperables[As cynical ... • Bad Anachronism and the Early Evolution of the Sestina: Relating the
End-Words in Arnaut Daniel’s “Lo Ferm Voler” and Dante Alighieri’s
“Al Poco Giorno” as Ring Compositions

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The canso “Lo ferm voler” (BdT 29.14) is usually attributed to the troubadour Arnaut Daniel, who flourished between 1180– 1200 (Wilhelm 10). It is traditionally considered the first sestina (Davidson 18), although the earliest documented use of the term sestina occurs only some two centuries later (Aresu 152–153). A problem posed by Daniel’s canso is how to account for the discrepancy between the regular pattern of end-words in its coblas and their seemingly haphazard arrangement in its tornada. This article presents the somewhat surprising finding that a theoretical model informed by a critical analysis of two versions of Arnaut Daniel’s “Lo ferm voler,” mss A (Vatican City, Biblioteca Vaticana Apostolica, Vat. ... • Étudier la poésie des troubadours sans publier: La Branche savante des
           Provençalistes sous l’Ancien Régime

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Read More

  • Old Occitan Philology in Italy: The Troubadours in Recent Past, Present,
           and Future

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The philology of Old Occitan literature has traditionally been very active in Italy. Old Occitan is frequently present in the field of studies of Romance Philology and is extensively taught in universities as a consequence of the long-standing Italian interest in the troubadours (although under a very different perspective from the American one, see Paden 2013), starting at least from Pietro Bembo’s statements in Prose della volgar lingua, 1525 (see most recently Pulsoni 2019) on the importance of Old Occitan poets and language for the birth and development of the Italian poetic tradition and literary language, up to the junction with modern historical-philological studies from the second half of the nineteenth ... • Further Research Is Needed (FRIN): A Brief Overview

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Tenso’s op-ed rubric continues into its third year, inspired by lessons the editors first learned from their respective maîtres, Robert Taylor (Toronto) and Yakov Malkiel (Berkeley) and informed by a growing number of colleagues willing to tackle the question: Where should Occitan studies be headed'If there is any concept central to the op-ed pieces published in Tenso 35 and 36, it must be “interconnectedness.” There is striking agreement among our earliest contributors. Whether addressing troubadour poetry or the entire Occitan literary canon, the lexicon or digital resources, they speak to the importance of connecting future studies with culture and history.William Paden would expand the study of troubadour ... • Grains of Gold – Compiling an Historical Anthology of Occitan
           Literature

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Some endeavours are so foreboding they might be considered acts of folly. The compilation of a 780–page anthology of Occitan literature with English translations could be — to those with an interest in such matters — a prime example. Most scholars and researchers of Occitan from English-speaking nations are, so the argument goes, medievalists, for whom whatever happened after 1400 to the first Romance language of the French Midi is of no real concern. There is some truth in this assertion. Each year produces new monographs on troubadour culture, multilingualism in southern France during the Albigensian Crusades, gender and religious dissent in Provence or — periodically —annotated editions and bilingual anthologies ... • L’Épopée perdue de l’occitan (1983) by Jean-Claude
           Dinguirard (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: L’Épopée perdue de l’occitan was first published in 1983 in the journal Via Domitia, not long after the untimely death of the author, Jean-Claude Dinguirard, the editor-in-chief of the journal. Seeking a wider audience for this book, Pierre Escudé has edited Dinguirard’s text, taking advantage of the original manuscript on which the journal version was based, notes found among Dinguirard’s papers, and an annotated typescript sent to the journal Romania in 1982 (16). The seven appendices contain a note submitted to Romania in 1982 (237), Escudé’s explanation of Dinguirard’s approach to research (163–194) and reprints of the following: articles by Gaston Paris (195–202), Antoine Thomas (203–205), and Rita Lejeune ... • Stolen Song: How the Troubadours Became French by Eliza Zingesser (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The troubadours initiated an aesthetic movement beginning in the twelfth century that extended well into the thirteenth century and beyond the borders of Occitania. The reception of their works, however, was not uniform across Europe. Thanks to Eliza Zingesser’s carefully argued and painstakingly documented study, specialists of Old French and Old Occitan song may now better understand how Francophone authors and audiences sought to subsume Occitan literary prestige into their own cultural traditions. This reviewer is wary of anachronistic applications of modern critical discourse to medieval contexts, but I have to agree with Zingesser’s assertion that this dynamic constitutes “cultural appropriation.” Whereas ...            trobadors ed. by Meritxell Simó (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The essays in this volume are related to research done for the massive project “Los trovadores: creación, recepción y críticia en la edad media y en la edad contemporània,” a study of the reception of medieval Occitan literature in an interdisciplinary context funded by a Spanish government grant (MINECA FFI2015– 68416–P). The authors here include literary scholars, linguists, and musicologists, many associated with the University of Barcelona’s Institut de Recerca en Cultures Medievals (IRCVM). Some of the articles were presented as papers at various symposia, conferences, and congresses between 2016 and 2018. The topics of this research project ranged from the Middle Ages to the modern era; essays in this volume ... Read More

  • Amori cortesi: Scritti sui trovatori by Pietro G. Beltrami (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Pietro Beltrami thought to publish a collection of previously published articles as early as 2003 or 2004 (xxxiii); in 2020 this came to pass, in part as a celebration of his retirement from the classroom (vii). The scholar credits several colleagues with helping him in this endeavor: Gian Paolo Codebò, Eliza Guadagnini, Antonella Martorano, Paolo Squillacioti, and Sergio Vatteroni, who served as “curators” of this ensemble and who may be responsible for some of the accompanying materials.Beltrami informs readers that he and the curators read carefully each of the twenty-five essays in this hefty volume, correcting typographic errors and silently inserting corrections and updates — two of the essays have codicils ...
