  • Introduction

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The value and impact of awards within the media industries is a question that draws heated and varied opinions from academics and industry members alike. Media awards can have many positive benefits, including bringing attention to underrecognized creatives who can inject new perspectives into mainstream culture. Moonlight (Barry Jenkins, 2016), acclaimed for its representation of Black queer masculinity, first gained attention through its recognition on the film festival circuit, and its eventual Best Picture Oscar win encouraged many to seek out the film, leading to its earning $2.5 million in a single post-Oscars weekend.1 Yet media awards are far from an unproblematic force, often reifying hierarchical systems ... • "There Would Be No Kerry Washington without Diahann Carroll": Shout-Out
Culture, Sisterhood, and the Discourse of Black Womanhood

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: This moment is so much bigger than me. This moment is for Dorothy Dandridge, Lena Horne, Diahann Carroll. It's for the women that stand beside me, Jada Pinkett, Angela Bassett, Vivica Fox, and it's for every nameless, faceless woman of color that now has the chance because this door tonight has been opened. Thank you. I'm so honored. I'm so honored and I thank the Academy for choosing me to be the vessel for which this blessing might flow. Thank you.On the biggest night of her career, when she made history in 2002 as the first African American actress to receive an Academy Award for Best Actress, Halle Berry used her acceptance speech to "shout out" other Black actresses. Berry thus placed herself within a larger ... Read More

  • Awarding Chinese-Language Cinemas: Imaginary Transnational Identities of
           the Golden Horse Awards

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The golden horse awards ceremony held on november 17, 2018. ended in contr Oversy when the Malaysian-Taiwanese documentarian Fu Yue revealed in her acceptance speech for the Best Documentary award that she hoped Taiwan could be treated as an independent country. Such a sensitive comment on the political tensions between Taiwan and China resulted in an immediate interruption of the online livestreaming on Chinese media platforms. Moreover, Chinese actress Gong Li, who was the jury chair of the event, declined to go onstage to give the Best Picture award with her cohost, Taiwanese director and event chairman Ang Lee, and she didn't appear at the after-party to be interviewed. Shortly afterward, many Chinese netizens ... Read More

  • Golden Gays: Awards Legitimation from the Globes to GLAAD

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Contemporary television platforms—whether streaming outlets, premium cable networks, or traditional broadcast networks—increasingly foreground depictions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) themes, often touting a narrative of representational progress. Media scholars, however, have interrogated this frame of expanded inclusivity as a problematic industrial appeal that aligns sexual difference with white, upscale cosmopolitanism, legitimates the medium via gendered and classist appeals to privileged viewers, fractures audiences along political and geographic lines, and further disenfranchises marginalized viewers by trafficking in "plastic" diversity while catering to conglomerate interests.1 ... • Industrializing Nationalist Dissent: Music Censorship, 2 Live Crew, and
the Politics of Performance at the 1990 MTV Video Music Awards

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: When the rap group 2 live crew took to the stage at the 1990 mtv video music Awards (VMAs), their performance centered pop music within nationalist imaginings of free speech amid moral panic about the depredatory effects of obscene lyrics on the nation's youth. Challenging legal efforts to classify rap lyrics as violent, the group performed their recent single "Banned in the U.S.A." (1990) following the arrest of members Luther Campbell and Chris Wong Won on obscenity charges at a Florida nightclub.1 Reclaiming the power of lyrics to rap truth to power, 2 Live Crew explicitly placed their racial identity within the context of their arrest, stating, "Freedom of speech will never die. . . . We're 2 Live, 2 Black, 2 ... Read More

  • Hollywood's Culture of Scientific and Technical Achievement

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Buried within the annual oscars broadcast of the academy of motion picture arts and Sciences (AMPAS, or the Academy), lodged among the patter of young stars of the moment, the half smiles of Hollywood's aging royalty, and the rushed acceptance speeches, is a montage of the Scientific and Technical Awards ceremony that has already taken place.1 For several decades, the Scientific and Technical Awards were handed out as part of the main Oscars ceremony, but since the forty-seventh edition of the Academy Awards in 1974, they have been a stand-alone event. From 2001 to 2012, a female star hosted those occasions, which were scheduled earlier and without the global televised production apparatus of the Oscars; Elizabeth ... Read More

  • Professional Widows: Contesting History with the Rock and Roll Hall of
           Fame

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In june 2019, courtney love participated in a questionnaire conducted by interview. The Q&A served no immediate promotional function. But Love was in the air, as many critics speculated whether she had inspired Elisabeth Moss's turn as the volatile rock star Becky Something in Alex Ross Perry's new film Her Smell.1 While promoting the film in other outlets, Perry and Moss denied that Love and her band Hole had influenced the film's depiction of a fictional rock group's efforts to withstand their charismatic but self-destructive front woman. Perry claimed he was dramatizing the plight of several female-fronted alternative acts who experienced modest success in the mid-1990s, while Moss challenged the assumption that ... Read More

  • Fashion on The Red Carpet: A History of the Oscars®, Fashion, and
Globalisation by Elizabeth Castaldo Lundén (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Fashion and the red carpet are intertwined in our cultural imagination. From the Grammys to the People's Choice Awards, celebrities dressed in the latest couture and ready-to-wear (including an occasional meat dress) parade down the famed carpet to power a mega-wattage spectacle. Through a careful balancing of interests—prestige, glamour, cultural codes, brand awareness, and, of course, economics—celebrities and their sartorial choices have come to play an integral role in the media industries. Elizabeth Castaldo Lunden explores this carefully orchestrated fashion-Hollywood arrangement through an extended case study of the Academy Awards in Fashion on the Red Carpet: A History of the Oscars®, Fashion, and ... • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In cinema and the cultural cold war: us diplomacy and the Origins of the Asian Cinema Network, Sangjoon Lee documents the roots of the interconnections within Asian national and regional cinemas that emerged during the Cold War. The book originated from documents that Lee examined in 2012 at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University pertaining to the Asia Foundation (TAF). The author's archival research continued for another four years, expanding to cities—Los Angeles, New York, Honolulu, Canberra, Hong Kong, Seoul, and Singapore—that have served as key nodes in the network of Asian cinema in terms of hosting regional film festivals and serving as centers of production. The strength of the book lies in this ... Read More

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Glenn frankel's shooting "midnight cowboy": Art, Sex, Loneliness, Liberation, and the Making of a Dark Classic bills itself as a biography of Midnight Cowboy, a film Frankel argues was made by people looking for purpose in a time when the cards of society were stacked against them. The 1969 film follows a young Texan who travels to New York City to make his fortune as a male prostitute, where he befriends an ailing con man who helps him with his endeavor. The film explores themes of loneliness and homosexuality, and its realistic story highlights the dirty underbelly of America. The United Artists–produced film made history by being the first X-rated film to win a number of prestigious awards, including the Academy ... Read More
