Abstract: "In African thought, nature is not separated from people."1"African religions played an important role in molding the two missionary religions. One effect of this has been the transformation of the ancient rivalry between Christianity and Islam by confronting them with the decisive issue of indigenization. Across the path of self-confident missionary faith Africa has erected the solid barrier of traditional religions, which neither Christianity nor Islam was able to ignore."2To describe the context of this research and recognize potential cross-cultural biases, readers should know up front that the personal experiences of one author (Daniel Paracka) figure prominently in the following discussion. He served as a ... Read More

           Obàtálá in Ilé-Ifè, Southwestern Nigeria

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Ilé-Ifè, the holy city within which 201 deities of the Yòrùbá are domiciled, is the source of certain notable aspects of the Yòrùbá civilization.1 As the domain of the gods, Ilé-Ifè plays host to many daily propitiations, weekly venerations, and annual festivals conducted throughout the year, in some instances concurrently.2 As such, Ilé-Ifè has lingered in the imagination of scholars who have explored various aspects of the city's cultural and social history.3 The attention accorded to Ilé-Ifè over the past decades includes studies of several festivals, including the Edì,4 Olójó,5 and Ifá6 festivals, which have been extensively explored in the literature. However, many festivals are waiting to receive adequate ... Read More

Abstract: You can be good without God.slogan of the atheists in kenya societyIt's very difficult to be an atheist in a religious culture. I have three other friends who are atheists, and we basically hide it.chat from lamu, kenya, in the atheists in kenya society whatsapp thread, name withheldFrom its inception, nonreligion has never been entirely free of conditional definitions, negative evaluations, or the assertion that it is a "residual category," insinuating that it is something left over from something else.1 Until more recently, nonreligion and the Nones (that is, those without any religious affiliation) have not been categories standing on their own ontological merits. For these reasons, among others, "visibility of ... Read More

  • Ancestrality, Affliction, and Catholic Song: Resonances of Africa in
Alternative Caboclo Cosmology in Bahia, Brazil

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The present article highlights the way in which a central African worldview—including premodern Bantu cosmology and African Catholicism—served as the structural backbone for the development of the caboclo spirit as conceptualized by countless devotees in Bahia, Brazil. In contrast to the scholarship that has historically looked at the caboclo spirit in Bahia by way of the practices and discourses of practitioners of Candomblé, in this study I am primarily interested in the traditions of caboclo veneration found outside of explicitly Afro-Brazilian religious houses of worship. In fact, as we will see, looking at how non-Candomblé devotees—and especially those who affirm Catholicism as their primary religious ... Read More

  • An Inquiry into the "Maleness" of God in African Traditional Religions:
The Igbo and Yorùbá as Illustrations

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The task of this article is to establish that the masculine expression of God in African Traditional Religions (ATR) is misplaced. This research builds on the work of Nisbert Taringa, who had earlier questioned whether the African concept for God is male or female.1 Much as Taringa limits the analysis to the Shona of Zimbabwe, this article explores two religious cultures in modern Nigeria: the Igbo and Yorùbá.2 Like Taringa, this research finds that the influence of Western scholarship and Abrahamic monotheisms over ATR fuels this masculine ascription of God.3 We recognize that there is a subtle form of "smuggling" and attempt to Hellenize ATR based on Western understandings and Abrahamic monotheisms, as Ugandan ...
