  • Dealing with Mukhtalaf al-Hadīth: Between the Prohibition and the
           Instruction of Writing Hadīths

    • Authors: Ahmad Syauqi
      Pages: 1 - 15
Abstract: Hadīth is one of the two sources of law in Islam whose existence is irreplaceable for the Muslim community. Apart from being an explanation of the Qurʾān, there are instances where ḥadīths establish laws that are not specified in the Qurʾān. Realizing the importance of ḥadīth, there are those who attempt to cast doubts on the validity and authenticity of ḥadīth by arguing that the writing of ḥadīth was only done hundreds of years after the demise of the Prophet ﷺ. This argument is built upon ḥadīths in which the Prophet ﷺ warned against writing down ḥadīth. However, on the other hand, a number of ḥadīths indicate the opposite, in which the Prophet ﷺ ordered writing down ḥadīth. The contradiction between these two categories of ḥadīths falls under the the mukhtalaf al-ḥadīth. This contradiction provides a massive confusion regarding the documentation of ḥadīth. This study focuses mostly on the ḥadīth of prohibition by analysing the sanad (chain of narration) andmatn (text) of the ḥadīth, and the methodology to resolve this contradiction. The study discovered that the ḥadīth of prohibition is ṣaḥīḥ (authentic), and indeed contradiction exists between the ḥadīth of prohibition and the ḥadīth of instruction of writing down ḥadīth. However, the ruling inferred from the ḥadīth of prohibition was replaced by the ḥadīth of instruction of writing down ḥadīth.

  • دلالات أصوات أحكام التجويد وأثرها في فهم
           المبهم والمشكل من القرآن

    • Authors: Subaiya Abd al-Rashid al-Balouche, Radwan Jamal Elatrash
      Pages: 16 - 36
Abstract: The Noble Qur’an is the great book of Allah revealed as guidance for all and an eternal miracle until the Day of Judgment. It challenged the most eloquent of Arabs, but they were unable to produce a verse similar to it. It amazed not only their minds but also their hearts. Its words guided those who were lost in depths of disbelief and misguidance and when some of them listened to God’s word, they were amazed and prostrated to Him, realizing that these words are not human speech. Since the beginning of revelation to this day, a group of scholars specializing in the studies of the Qurʾān have analysed and contemplated on its meanings and the construction of its words, fawāṣil, muqāṭʿah, sakanāt, ḥarakāṭ, muddāt and melody. One of the greatest signs of the miraculousness of this great book is that the scholars were unable to agree upon an explanation of some of its words and verses, so they paused at some of them because of the apparent contradiction in the interpretation of one of its words that carry more than one meaning. As a result, some scholars of Qurʾānic studies have shown great interest in this aspect of the Book of God, as it entails eliciting some legal rulings related to aspects of life. This gave birth to the science of mushkil al-Qurʾān, which is concerned with ambiguous words and their unapparent meanings. This laid the foundations, rules and approaches in dealing with problematic words and verses. In light of this, this research explores the extent of the impact of reading the Qurʾān with in line with the rules of tajwīd in solving apparent problems. This research adopted inductive analytical methods to present that each word of the Qur’an has special connotations in accordance with its sound and intonation, and this was one of the foundations and methods that scholars used to solve apparent problems of some words of Qurʾān.

  • مشكل الحديث: قضايا وحلول

    • Authors: Saad Eldin Mansour, Ahmed Elmogtaba Bannga
      Pages: 37 - 66
Abstract: The issue of “problematic ḥadīth” is one of the most important issues related to the science of dirāyah al-ḥadīth. It related to a number of other sciences, such as al-ʿilal, abrogation, and gharīb al-ḥadīth. This research is concerned with defining problematic ḥadīth lexically and technically, and explaining the difference between it and contradicting ḥadīth. It provides a historical overview of problematic ḥadīth and books which deal with this issue and the methodology adopted by their authors. It also explains the causes and dimensions of the problem. It then suggests the principles of engaging with problematic ḥadīth. The method used in this research are inductive and analytical methods. It proposes a new definition of problematic ḥadīth, combining elements of the issue and excluding other irrelevant aspects. There are three causes of problematic ḥadīth: that which is related to the text itself, that which is caused by the reader or listener, and that which is related to the surrounding circumstances. The person engaging with problematic ḥadīth should be well-versed with various methods and principles in dealing with the issue.

  • حديث رؤية الهلال بين الإشكالية والحل

    • Authors: Muhammed Unais Kunnakkadan, Mohammed Abullais al-Khayrabadi
      Pages: 67 - 77
Abstract: This research deals with the problem of the famous ḥadīth “Observe fast upon sighting it (the new moon), and break your upon sighting it” in determining the beginning of the lunar month and discusses its solution taking into consideration the temporal dimension of the rulings derived from the ḥadīth. It discusses the verses and ḥadīths related to the significance of this topic in the light of their commentaries. It attempts to analyse the evidences depended upon by prominent scholars who argue in favour of visual sighting and opposing views of scholars who permit the utilisation of contemporary astronomical calculations. The research concludes that the Qur’an and ḥadīth neither clearly indicate that visual sighting is the legal requirement to establish the beginning of the lunar month, nor present it as the only inevitable means of proof. The desired objective of the ḥadīth is fasting the whole of Ramaḍān without missing any days of it. Visual sighting was the means for people during the time of the Prophet, as indicated by the ḥadīth: “We are a nation that neither write nor calculate.” There is nothing wrong with changing means due to advancements, taking into consideration the temporal and spatial dimensions of the ḥadīth, just as we rely on the compass in determining the direction of the qiblah and the specific time of prayer, especially in an era when man was able to ascend and land on the moon - as claimed -. God does not burden a soul beyond its capacity; and God wants ease not hardship for the ummah.

  • المشكل من الحديث النبوي في الصحيحين:
           نماذج من أحاديث العقائد والعبادات
           والمعاملات

    • Authors: Sameeha Abd al-Razzaq Bashawri
      Pages: 78 - 100
Abstract: The science of ḥadīth is not only one of the important sciences after the Book of God, rather it is the most important of them. Knowledge of contradictions, problems, conflicts, and methods of reconciliation and preference etc. reflect the preciseness and accurateness of this science. These are important to defend the Sunnah against those are misguided and follow their desires, and in order to practice all that has been transmitted if they can be reconciled. This research clarifies the reasons underlying problematic ḥadīths and the methods by which scholars defend and justify them. In doing so, it also analyses a number of ḥadīths related to dogma, acts of worship and interactions. This research will present solutions to these problems based on theories and the opinions of scholars. This research adopts inductive and analytical methods in addressing problematic ḥadīths found in the Ṣaḥīḥayn.
