  • The Construction of Fundamental Values of Islamic Economics: Learning From
           Ulul Albāb Verses

    • Authors: Aunur Rofiq, Yuniarti Hidayah Suyoso Putra, Ahmad Djalaluddin , Wildana Wargadinata, Khairul Anam
      Pages: 1 - 25
Abstract: Ulul Albāb is a symbol of trusted, educated people, who can achieve a comprehensive synergy between spirituality, humanity, charity, and mental attitude when responding to the verses of Allah, whether the written verses (the Qur’an) or the verses of the cosmos (nature and its phenomenon). This study is noteworthy because Islamic economists and popular commentators of tafsir books have not widely studied Islamic economic values based on the Ulul Albāb verses. Hence, this paper aimed to construct the fundamental values of Islamic economics based on the Ulul Albāb verses. This work employed thematic exegesis and content analysis. Sixteen (16) verses in the Qur’an mentioned the term Ulul Albāb, with seven (7) verses are connected to the economic issues. This research is focused on Surah al-Baqarah (2): 197 and 269. Based on these verses, the fundamental values of Islamic economics in four (4) aspects are constructed, namely, spirituality, humanity, technical, and ethical aspects. It is expected that the study will be the model of thematic exegesis in constructing the fundamental values from various terms in the Qur’an, especially regarding actual values related to Islamic economics.

  • The ‘Conventions of The Arabs’ (Maʿhūd Al-ʿarab) As A Fundamental
           Principle of Tafsir

    • Authors: Abdulrahman Helli
      Pages: 26 - 57
Abstract: This article aims to re-examine a rather neglected yet fundamental principle in the Islamic exegetical heritage, namely, ‘considering the conventions of the Arabs at the time of revelation of the Qurʾān’ - murāʿāt maʿhūd al-ʿArab fī ʿaṣr an-nuzūl. The study adopts the historical approach, inductive and analytical method. It begins with a theoretical and historical introduction of the meaning and implications of this principle by demonstrating -through examples from the tradition- how it was employed for the interpretation and comprehension of the Qurʾān. The article then offers an examination of the significance of this principle in light of the writings of al-imām al-Shāṭibī, who christened the appellation maʿhūd al-ʿArab and then proceeds to presenting the approach of the Indian exegete ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd al-Farāhī on the relevance of the common parlance of the ancient Arabs, with a comparative analysis of their respective approach. The study concludes that the exegetes took care of the conventions of the Arabs, but that was not always the case, the significance of the research can be seen through the prospects of implementing this principle in the field of Qurʾanic Studies for the development of a historical-critical hermeneutical approach for textual analysis.

  • The Influence of The Qurān on The Nigerian Arabic Plays; The Oseni’s
At-Ṭabaqat Al ‘Ulyā (The Upper Class) As Case Study

    • Authors: Lawal Rahman
      Pages: 58 - 69
Abstract: Studies have shown that the Quran has influenced Arabic literature in various ways. The Nigerian Arabic literature is not an exemption. This study therefore examines the influences of the Quran on the Nigerian Arabic plays using the Oseni’s at-Tabaqat al-Ulya (The Upper Class) as a case study. The research is therefore significant as it examines the semantic variations of the Quranic text appearing in the text of the play.  The research reveals how much the Nigerian Arabic literary experts use and value the Quran. The researcher adopts the descriptive and analytical methods of research. The researcher describes and analyses how the writer has used the Quran to influence his styles and the characters’ dialogue until the climax is reached. It is unfolded that the playwright’s styles have been influenced by the Quran in five ways. These include using certain   expressions prescribed by the Quran in dialogue, using it to introduce and reveal outcome of events, express fear, signify warning and most commonly for supplication. In all the five cases, the Quranic wordings are either quoted directly or paraphrased. The study reveals how the Quran influences the author’s styles and thereby contributes strongly to the organic unity of the literary piece of work.  It is recommended therefore that researchers should investigate more on the influence of the Quran on other aspects of the Nigerian Arabic writings.

  • The Treatment and Prevention of Leprosy (Al-Judham) and its Correlation in
Dealing with The Spread of Covid-19 According to the Perspective of Hadith

    • Authors: A’inaa Lyana Amanina Mohd Zaim, Khadher Ahmad
      Pages: 93 - 116
Abstract: The treatment and prevention of disease is an effort of healing and self -protection from disease. In the hadith there were clear explanation of the treatment and prevention of several types of diseases including infectious diseases such as leprosy and cholera. Through a comparative analysis method, this article seeks to analyze hadiths related to leprosy and its treatment within the framework of fiqh al-hadith to find correlations with Coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19) in terms of its spread, treatment approach and prevention efforts. All the explanations are done through inductive and deductive methods. The hypothesis showed that there are clear relationship between the two diseases in terms of infection through air and respiratory droplets as well as methods in breaking the chain of infection. The results of the study found that there are six hadiths that directly related between the two diseases in particular through the source of al-Kutub al-Sittah. The hadiths cover aspects of prevention and control that are understood from fiqh al-hadith. From the medical aspect, these two diseases have similarities in terms of the mode of infection and the spread of the disease through the air. Thus, it is clear that the understanding of leprosy described in the hadith can be used as a guide in applying treatment approaches and prevention efforts to the spread of COVID-19 epidemic.
