  • On The ʾaṣ-Ṣulb and ʾat-Tarāʾib: A
           Linguistic Perspective

    • Authors: Rashid Al-Balushi
      Pages: 1 - 28
Abstract: Allah Almighty says in verses (Q. 86:5-7) that the human being is created from ‘gushing water’ that emanates from between ʾaṣ-ṣulb and ʾat-tarāʾib. These two terms have been associated with different body parts in the traditional interpretations and modern translations of the Holy Qurʾān, as well as in some of the contemporary investigations into the issue of human procreation. This paper surveys these views, and cites two modern views on this issue, one is anatomical and the other is cosmological. Besides, it shows that language can provide yet another understanding, one according to which ʾaṣ-ṣulb may refer to the ‘tailbone’, and ʾat-tarāʾib may be interpreted to refer to ‘the rest of the human body’.

  • Self-Development in The Holy Qur’an: The Important Role of

    • Authors: Nabeel Iqbal, Muhammad Iqbal Hossain
      Pages: 29 - 42
Abstract: The existing literature on Islamic self-development does not highlight the important role of metacognition in the self-development process. In this article, we argue that metacognition is the first step towards the specific type of self-development stressed in the Holy Qur’an. Therefore, we develop a simple guide to self-development based on the Qur’an with metacognition as the initial step. Firstly, the chapters and/or verses in the Qur’an related to self-development was identified. Secondly, the important words from these verses were studied using a dictionary of the Holy Qur’an. Then this information was used to derive a simple guide to self-development. The article also compares the Qur’anic concept of self-development with that of meditation in Buddhism. Interestingly, we find that there are certain similarities as well as differences between the two schools of thought. In particular, the Qur’an emphasizes an active engagement with negative thoughts, emotions, and mental processes as well as a deliberate attempt at cultivating specific positive traits and mental processes. In contrast, the meditation techniques in Buddhism are more passive and does not emphasize the active internal struggle (jihād al-nafs) that the Holy Qur’an emphasizes. Future research can scientifically test and compare the effects of metacognition on spiritual-development and/or self-development.

  • The Collapse of The Universe: Analysis From The Glorious Qur’an and
           Signs in The Universe

    • Authors: Kitota Abdillah
      Pages: 43 - 60
Abstract: This review takes as its central pre-occupation to look at the strong correlation between three verses in the Qur’an; namely 21:30; 51:47 and 21:104, and recent scientific discoveries in the field of Astronomy. While Qur’anic scholars have produced a large corpus of review articles on the origin and expansion of the universe in the light of modern science, the component of the ultimate fate of the universe has so far received little attention. The specific focus of this article is on the aspect of the collapse of the universe as expressed in the Qur’an; by considering the strong correlation between these three verses, and the state of current scientific knowledge on this subject. The review uses the Thematic Approach [Uslub Tafsir Al-Maudhu’i] and Synoptic Approach [Uslub Tafsir Ijmali] of what has been revealed in these verses and other related verses, as compared to what has been presented in various modern literatures in Astronomy. The findings show that the exposition of the Qur’an in verses 21:30; 51:47 and 21:104 has traversed the subject of Astronomy from the origin to expansion and ultimate collapse of the universe. It is hoped that this modest contribution may generate the interest of other scholars to do more research in this area.

  • A Complete Set of Inheritance System in The Quran

    • Authors: Md. Quamrul Ahsan
      Pages: 61 - 98
Abstract: The appropriate distribution of property, left behind by the deceased, is an essential requirement to avoid the unhealthy relations among the relatives of the deceased. The inheritance system, revealed in the Quran, is definitely the most appropriate one for the human being. However, the Muslim laws of inheritance in practice differ in many cases from it. This paper presents the inheritance system of the Quran showing clearly that; First, the inheritance system revealed in the Quran is complete and exhaustive indicating that one does not require any other document to distribute the properties of the deceased. Second, the Quran explicitly states the list of the heirs and their shares for different combination of living heirs. The list of the heirs and their shares are confined by boundaries (hudud). That is, the list of heirs neither can be extended nor shortened and the specified shares are fixed. Third, if anyone heir from among the list is alive he/she will be the recipient of the whole property. Fourth, brother/sister or both will be the heir(s) if only the deceased is childless. Fifth, the revealed system is a set of mandatory instructions from Allah (SWT). It may be noted that to the author’s knowledge the revealed concepts presented in first and third are neither practiced in any Muslim society nor reported in the literature.

           in Tafsir al-Azhar

    • Authors: Muhammad Mukhlis Yunus, M.Y. Zulkifli Mohd Yusoff
      Pages: 99 - 125
Abstract: This study is aimed to identify the Maqasid al-Quran and its importance in understanding some verses with nuances of cultural diversity, namely verse 62 of surah al-Baqarah and verse 69 of surah al-Ma`idah for example. This study is also to analyze the Maqasid al-Quran on the interpretation of the verses that have been applied by HAMKA in Tafsir al-Azhar. The methodology of this study is in the form of text analysis and content analysis. While inductive, deductive and comparative approaches are used to analyze the data. The findings of this study revealed that Maqasid al-Quran has a role in the interpretation of verses that are nuanced cultural diversity. It also revealed that HAMKA has applied the classical and contemporary Maqasid al-Quran to the interpretation of verses that are nuanced cultural diversity in Tafsir al-Azhar. Nevertheless, the contemporary model of Maqasid al-Quran is more dominant than the classical, although both verses are related to faith in terms of its content. This study concludes that the application of Maqasid al-Quran to the interpretation of tolerance verses is more focused by people who wants to explain it. In terms of the implication of the study, a methodology of Tafsir Maqasidi has been developed and it can be used as a method of interpretation of the verses of tolerance.

  • Application of the "Text from Text and Extra Dimension Discourse Analysis
"Theory: "Tawjediah" phrases in the Holy Qur'an

    • Authors: Aiman Eid Al-Rawajfeh
      Pages: 153 - 170
Abstract: This paper presents a new concept; "Tawjidiyyah Sentences", depending on the "D+ text from text discourse analysis theory". Tawjidiyyah Sentences are: "terminal sentences, or phrases, or words, or even letters that are fixed to be repeated or may be repeated to emphasize the words and renew the meaning, and it can be fixed (written in the text) or ponderously (may be repeated due to reader's reflecting upon)". Tawjidiyyah is a hybrid word from the Arabic words; Tawkidiyyah (emphasis) and Tajdidiyyah (Renewal). It is terminal because it may appear in the beginning or the end of the sentence. It can also be considered as a special case from the "Cementing phrases". Examples from the Holy Qur'an will be given to build a solid base and establish the concept. The application of this concept must not ever oppose the original meaning, or even contradict with, in contrast, it increases the capacity of understanding.

  • The Purposes of Change in Quranic Discourse: The Conditions of Ungratefuls
           as a Model

    • Authors: Hunada Ahmad Mohammad Rashad, Nayel Mamdouh Abu Zaid
      Pages: 171 - 200
Abstract: The study has discussed the close relationship between the methods of rhetoric in the Holy Quran and the Quranic objectives by surveying the change in Quranic forms of address pertaining to the conditions and sayings of the repudiators, which establishes an original statute in Quranic interpretation through the lens of Quranic objectives. This study has brought to light the importance of indicatives and employing them to uncover Quranic objectives. The study aims to discover the purposes behind the changes in Quranic address and rhetoric observed across many verses. It also reveals the objectives behind the different styles of address and rhetoric which sheds light on interpretation through the lens of Quranic objectives. It also uncovers the importance of language in identifying these purposes and ensuring constant alignment with them. The researcher has adopted an analytical methodology as well as a topical one in analyzing the indications behind terms included in the address of ignominy towards repudiators, and the address of one to many to understand the implication of the change in address and how it reflects upon Quranic objectives. Several conclusions were reached, a couple being: Linguistic interpretation protects interpretation through Quranic purposes from inexperienced intruders, who (like many others preceding them) result in an erroneous tangent of misinterpretation.

  • The Purposes of Changing in Challenging Discourse in the Holy Quran

    • Authors: Loai S M Abusweireh, Thabet Ahmad Abdallah Abu-Alhaj, Ahmad Najib Bin Abdullah
      Pages: 201 - 235
Abstract: This study aims to inspect some different opinions, and to determine the most accurate meaning of al-āyāt (the Quranic verses). It also aims to stress the significance of the Quranic context in clarifying the meanings, easing the understanding of the Quran, and removing the confusion and ambiguity brought by the large number of opinions on it. The study sheds light as well on the importance of the context as it is one of the essential elements in understanding the Quranic text and interpreting it correctly. The researcher used the inductive approach in defining certain disagreements on the interpretation of Surah al-Tawbah, the descriptive analytical method in the theoretical study and a segment of the applied study, and the deductive method in weighing the different opinions then giving preponderance to which is more correct (tarjīh). Among the important findings of the study are the Quranic context is considered a pillar in the process of tarjīh between the different opinions among the scholars of tafsir. the knowledge of the different Quranic uses of a Quranic term throughout the Quran is also an important element in the contextual Quranic studies and it helps in the process of tarjīh.
