  • Islam and environmental sustainability: Perspectives and challenges

    • Authors: Serge Silatsa Nanda, Surwandono Suwardono, Abdoulaye Njoya Nchankou, Ahmad Sahide, Francis Brice Tedou Silatsa, Lucie Felicite Temgoua
      Pages: 112 - 130
Abstract: Recent studies stressed the importance of religion in addressing climate change and other environmental issues. However, little attention is paid to Islamic perception and challenges toward environmental sustainability. This study addresses a) Islamic prescriptions regarding environmental protection, b) Islamic involvement in environmental organizations worldwide and c) the assessment of the carbon impact of the Hajj. Our investigation shows a large range of Islamic prescriptions for the protection of the component of the environment such as water, air, soil, plants, and animals, making Islam a good defender of the environment. The strict implementation of these prescriptions would contribute to the mitigation of environmental issues that our planet is facing while insuring environmental sustainability. Muslims are as well actively working together with several Islamic environmental organisations around the world to protect our environment. The 2011-2019 Hajj season, for instance, has emitted an average of 5.2 million tonnes of CO2 per year for pilgrims’ transport using cars, boat and airplane. A strong correlation (0.77) was observed between the number of pilgrims and carbon emissions. Moreover about 42,000 tons of waste are produced annually during the Hajj. Actions, such as tree planting and waste recycling, have to be taken to reduce the environmental impact of pilgrimage, so as to support the green Hajj movement and showing the world that Islam is the reference in terms of ecological religion for environmental sustainability. Keywords: Carbon Emission, Environment Sustainability, Hajj, Islam.

  • Implications of State Sovereignty for the Ratification of International
           Law

    • Authors: Nur Rohim Yunus, Muhammad Sholeh, Ida Susilowati
      Pages: 131 - 150
Abstract: In international relations, the implications of state sovereignty on the ratification of international law is an essential issue. Conflicts between state sovereignty and international obligations arising from ratifying international agreements are the subject of this study. This discussion demonstrates that when countries authorize international contracts, they commit to abide by the stipulations of these agreements. Although state sovereignty is an essential principle in the national legal system, states must consider the effects of ratification on their authority to act contrary to nationally acknowledged principles and values. The research method used is qualitative, with a literature and statutory approach. The research results state that ratifying international treaties can benefit countries, such as increased international reputation and global cooperation. However, there are potential downsides, such as reduced state freedom of action and reliance on international oversight mechanisms. To address this challenge, countries need to adopt ratification decision-making mechanisms that are transparent, participatory and involve consultation with diverse stakeholders. Awareness of the implications of state sovereignty on ratification of international law is essential to ensure the existence of national legal sovereignty and achieve common global goals. • The Role and Perspective of Islamic Organizations on The LGBT Movement in
           Indonesia

    • Authors: Regita Safitri Wulandari, Erina Wahyu Anjani, Retnadhieas Azzah Rieftiani
      Pages: 173 - 185
Abstract: LGBT has become a global phenomenon proved by the massive movement carried out, proves that the presence of LGBT has been supported and accepted by many countries. On the other hand, LGBT also reaps a lot of resistance in several countries, one of which is in Indonesia. This is because Indonesia is a country with a majority Muslim population, which in Islam itself strongly rejects the LGBT movement. This study aims to discuss the roles and perspectives of several Islamic mass organizations in Indonesia in dealing with the LGBT phenomenon, namely the MUI, NU, and Muhammadiyah movements. This article uses the concept of the role of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) with data collection carried out via the internet by searching and collecting bold documents from the organizations under study. This research found that the role of the three mass organizations is still quite minimal in terms of most of their activities which are still limited to short statements and protests in dealing with the problem of LGBT which has become widespread in Indonesia. This research recommends that these three Islamic organizations should act comprehensively as NGOs to contain the influence of LGBT in Indonesia.            Directive II (RED II) Policy on The Issue of Discrimination Against
           Indonesian Palm Oil

    • Authors: Annisa Salsabilla, khairul Munziin, Indah Karya Ningrum, Dini Septyana Rahayu
      Pages: 186 - 195
Abstract: The discrimination of Indonesian palm oil imposed by the European Union through the Renewable Energy Directive II (RED II) policy provides mixed and overlapping speculation. This is evident by the E.U.'s unpublished interest in the issue of discrimination against Indonesian palm oil. The purpose of this study is to find out the hidden interests or objectives of the European Union after imposing trade barriers on Indonesian palm oil exports, which will be reviewed through the theory of neo-mercantilism and also the concept of national interest. This research uses qualitative methods in collecting data related to problems using a descriptive approach to ensure a consistent understanding of the ideas considered. Our analysis shows unprecedented public interest in the European Union regarding discrimination against Indonesian palm oil. This is an effort to protect the European Union from their domestic vegetable oils being less competitive than vegetable oils from Indonesian palm oil. The European Union imposed trade barriers to prevent Indonesian palm oil from quickly entering the European market. Keywords: palm oil discrimination, European Union, RED II

    • Authors: Fatchiyyah Robiah Al Adawiyah, Hasbi Aswar, Primadiani Difida Widyaputry, Fitry Wahyuni
      Pages: 196 - 207
Abstract: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) has become a polemic in global
politics due to the rapid growth of this movement in various parts of the world. The
entry of LGBT in Indonesia is considered as the actualization of freedom over
sexual orientation. On the other hand, LGBT also receives a lot of opposition
because Indonesia is a country with a majority Muslim population. This paper aims
to explain how massive the LGBT movement is in Indonesia and how Islamic
organizations such as NU and Muhammadiyah deal with it. This study uses the
concept of the role of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) as a tool to analyze
these problems. The method used is a qualitative method using literature studies
through online searches. The recommendation of this research is that Islamic
organizations should work more comprehensively to curb the growth of the LGBT
movement in Indonesia. Keywords: Indonesia, Muslim Groups, Threat of LGBT.
