  • Time and Speed of Stirring Treatment in Adsorption Effectiveness of Coffee
           Processing Waste Water

    • Authors: Elida Novita, Hendra Andiananta Pradana, Siti Nur Aenia
      Pages: 41 - 48
Abstract: Processing coffee with wet processing method produces a lot of waste water from the results of the vines, pulping, and the washing result of fermentation. The wastewater has the potential to pollute the environment in case of no treatment. Adsorption is one method that can reduce the risk of pollution from coffee wastewater. The time variation and stirring speed of adsorption affect the improvement of the quality of wastewater. The study aims to identify the influence of time and speed stirring towards the efficiency of decreasing the parameter turbidity and color in the adsorption of coffee wastewater using activated carbon from the fruit bark of coffee. Activated carbon is derived from the skin of the coffee fruit that has been called with NaOH 1 M. The parameters observed in the Adsoprsi i.e turbidity and color. The time used in stirring i.e 60 minutes 65 minutes, and 70 minutes with each speed of 60 rpm, 90 rpm, and 120 rpm. The thicveling result shows that the best stirring time and speed treatment was 60 Minutes/120 rpm. The time and stirring treatment of 60 minutes/120 rpm in coffee water adsoprsi has decreased efficiency in turbidity and color parameters respectively, 93.13% and 83.93%.

  • Efficiency adsorption of coffee wastewater with mass and time treatment

    • Authors: Elida Novita, Arthanti Yulia Admaja, Hendra Andiananta Pradana
      Pages: 49 - 56
Abstract: Coffee is one of the crops that has an economical value that is quite high. Wet or dry coffee processing will produce waste that can pollute the surrounding environment. Environmental impact caused by coffee wastewater in the form of water that becomes cloudy with dark color. The treatment can be done using the adsorption method. The adsorption method is performed using mass variation and contact time. The purpose of this research is to know the efficiency of the best activated carbon mass and the optimum contact time in the adsorption process on the handling of coffee wastewater. In the adsorption method, there are two parameters measured by the color and turbidity of wastewater. The mass of activated carbon used in each sample is 5 grams, 10 grams, and 15 grams with contact time of 60 minutes, 90 minutes, and 120 minutes. Expected results can decrease turbidity and color of wastewater. The best result of mass variation and contact time is 15 grams/60 minutes. By using a different mass and the time of contact in adsorption can decrease the characteristics of coffee wastewater that is in the turbidity parameter yields a efficiency of 89.58% and in color parameters reached 83.86%.

  • Averrhoa Bilimbi Linn c Respiration Study Using Passive Modified
           Atsmosphere Storage

    • Authors: Kurniawan Yuniarto
      Pages: 57 - 64
Abstract: Passive modified atmosphere storage (P-MAS) is a popular fresh fruits and vegetables storage method. The P-MAS creates naturally gas composition alteration due to aerobic respiration rate during storage which implies to maturity and shelf life. This research studied Averrhoa bilimbii Linn respiration behaviour by applying P-MAS at ambient temperature for 24 hours storage period. The gas composition was measured using typical zirconium and infrared gas sensor to determine oxygen and carbondioxide concentration. Heat and humidity were also logged by modifying SHT10 sensor. Acid titratic and weight loss represented the substrat consumption during respiration. The result investigated fastest respiration rate achieved at about RO2 28,60 ml [O2] kg-1 h-1 and (RCO2) sebesar 56,64 ml [CO2] kg-1 h-1 for an hour storage. The RQ was calculated above 1,0 for all period storage which indicated consumed organic acid material. Titratic acid reduced by 0,03 mg equivalent/100 g and average weigh loss was at about 0,04%. The Averrhoa bilimbi linn was categorized at sour-unripe during 24 hours storahe period and exponantially regression predicted sour-ripe level achieved after 37 hours.

  • The Development of Automatic Pineapple Washing and Drying Machine

    • Authors: hendriko hendriko, Teddy Pradipta Kajo, Jajang Jaenudin, Nur Khamdi, Tianur Tianur
      Pages: 65 - 72
Abstract: Indonesia is a country that produce a large variety and quantity of fruit. One of the prominent fruits is pineapple. Small and medium-sized industries that process pineapples into derivative products have sprung up in various regions. However, most of the processing is still conducted manually. One thing that still needs to be improved is the washing and drying process. Therefore, this research developed an automatic washing and drying machine. The developed machine uses a one-tube system so it could reduce the transfer process from one stage to the next. Testing on the developed machines has been carried out. The test results show that this machine is capable to process as much as 6.5 kg of pineapple in one batch. Another test to determine the most effective duration of washing and drying process was also carried out. The test results show that the effective washing time is 180 seconds, and the drying process is 90 seconds. Apart from the level of cleanliness and dryness of pineapple, this test also observes the damage of pineapple as a result of the washing and drying process. Simulations to measure the total time to operate the machine have been carried out. The data shows that it takes 303 seconds, starting from inserting pineapple to the tube, washing, draining, and finally removing pineapples from the tube. By using both data of average total processing time and optimum weight, the capacity of developed machine could be calculated. The capacity of this machine is around 77 kg per hour or 8.008 kg per month. With this capacity, this machine can be used by SME with a large production capacity.

  • Rainwater Harvesting as Alternative Clean Water Sources in the Bekasi
           Watershed

    • Authors: Dea Evantri, M. Yanuar Jawardi Purwanto, Roh Santoso Budi Waspodo, Nora Herdiana Pandjaitan
      Pages: 73 - 78
Abstract: Rainwater harvesting is one of the efforts to reduce surface runoff and increase water availability. Rainwater harvesting becomes one of the alternatives to meet the water needs of the community and reduce the use of PDAM water or groundwater. Rainwater harvesting planning in the Bekasi watershed aims to meet the water needs of the community in the upstream areas of the Bekasi river who have used PDAM water. Rainwater harvest planning is calculated based on the amount of water needed and the accommodated rainwater volume. The dimension of the reservoir was planned with a capacity of 4 m³ with a height of 160 cm and a thickness of 3 cm. The result of the calculation of the water needs of the community in the Bekasi watershed in 2018 was 73 million m³/year or equivalent to Rp 110 billion in PDAM rates. Through the rainwater harvesting planning, the amount of rainwater collected each year reached 7.8 million m³/year. Based on this research, the community can save water costs by 11% of the total costs incurred for PDAM water costs. Rainwater harvesting can be applied in the Bekasi watershed in the upstream areas and it is time to socialize it to the community.
