  • The Death of Angels according to Mullā Ṣadrā

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: As a common belief among Muslim philosophers and theologians, material (physical) creatures are alive only if they have a soul (nafs). This point of view is influenced by Plato and Aristotle. Plato considered the spirit (psyche) to be the principle of life in any living creature.1 Aristotle, following his instructor Plato, viewed the soul as the origin and source of life.2 Plotinus believed that the four elements of nature (fire, air, water, and earth) are not alive in themselves; nor even does their integration result in life, since it is the soul that grants them life and order.3Death, in its common meaning, means the complete and permanent disappearance of the vital signs, and the Muslim philosophers that were ... • The Barāthā Mosque and its Role in the Crystallisation of the
           Early Shi'i Thoughts

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: METHODOLOGY: The study uses a descriptive, historical, and analytical approach, deemed the most appropriate methodology for the topic.RESEARCH QUESTIONS: The study aims at providing answers to the following two questions:What is the role of the Barāthā Mosque in early Shi'i history'How did the Shi'a utilise the mosque's history and attributes in order to enhance its standing among its critics and opponents'Place is the specific location occupied by a body. Some researchers divide it into two types: Psychological space, perceived directly by the senses, and geometrical space, which is in the mind. Space has three dimensions: length, width, and depth. Its importance is usually associated with its environmental sense ... Read More

  • The Appearance of the Lord in the Clouds in Shiʻi and
           Ṣūfī Writings

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In the Qur'an, the word al-ghamām is used four times and it means 'clouds (2:57, 210, 7:160, 25:25).1 In spoken Arabic it refers to thin, white clouds. In the first verse, God sends manna and quails with clouds; in the second, He makes Himself known in the shadows of clouds; in the third verse He sends clouds to cast their shadows over the Israelites in the Sinai Desert, and finally, in the fourth, al-ghamām is mentioned in an eschatological context. Thus, in a Qur'anic context, clouds serve as a medium through which God intervenes in worldly affairs.Additionally, both Shiʻi authors and Ṣūfī masters have borrowed the Qur'anic concept of clouds, or shadows, to describe their ideals. In Islamic mysticism, the shadow ... Read More

  • The Conceptual Evolution of the Principles of Religion (Uṣūl
           al-din) in Imami Shi'a

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Historical studies show that the formation of the concept of the principles of religion – as a specific set of basic theological ideas and beliefs – was not found in the Imami school but was rooted in the works of other theological schools (Bayati, 2010, 312). The present study will show the evolution of the concept of principles of religion among Imami Shi'a thinkers up to the thirteenth century, when the concept of the five principles of religion—monotheism, justice, prophethood, resurrection and Imamate—became established among Shi'a.Background research shows that a dynamic approach to the history of thought did not exist among scholars in the field of Islamic theology. The only example is an article published ... Read More

  • The Conceptualization of Guardianship in Iranian Intellectual History
(1800–1989) Reading Ibn ͑Arabī's Theory of Wilāya in the Shī͑a
           World by Leila Chamankhah (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Who would have thought that the Iranian clergy, that once stood in defence of the monarchy, and which they even called 'corrupt' and a 'half-government', would one day not only throw out the latter but also establish a form of government based upon the guardianship of jurists, which had never been implemented before' The 1979 Iranian Revolution had replaced the method of governance and authority in Iran and brought forward concepts such as wilāyat al-faqīḥ as a means to rule. It's interesting in a sense that the idea of wilāyah, which was initially associated with prophets, imams and awliyāʾ, was eventually applied to jurists and clergy. From this perspective, the Iranian Revolution broke away from the traditional ... Read More

  • Safavid Persia in the Age of Empires, The Idea of Iran Volume X ed. by
           Charles Melville (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The complex and rich topic of Safavid Persia is challenging to cover in a single volume. Some things will necessarily have to be left out. While the many scholars of Safavid Persia in the Age of Empires address a wide range of issues, including political, military, and cultural, some topics, such as the complex dimensions of the establishment of Shi'a Islam, are insufficiently addressed. This includes Sufi-Shi'a relations, and how these soured as the decades passed, as well as the issue of education. Other issues, such as the multicultural aspect of Persia, and the relationship between the rulers' Turkish background in relation to the cities where Persian was the dominant language, are covered better. Despite ... Read More

  • Sciiti in Italia – Il cammino dell'Islam minoritario in diaspora by
           Minoo Mirshahvalad (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Mirshahvalad's The Shi'a in Italy – journey of minority Islam in the diaspora fills a significant gap in the study of Islam in Europe that almost inevitably targets the majority Muslim population adhering to Sunni 'orthodoxy'. Focusing on this 'minority within a minority' affords the author a broad canvas to present an otherwise relatively unknown community of Muslims who have either chosen to make Italy their home or who, as Italians, have chosen to convert to the Shi'a path.Unlike more established and larger Shi'a communities living in other parts of Europe, the diaspora in Italy is both dispersed and fragmented along ethnic lines—not unlike the Sunni communities who tend, for the same cultural and linguistic ...
