  • Establishing Suhrawardῑ's Ḥikmat al-Ishrāq Through
           Philosophical Discussion

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Shihāb al-Dῑn Suhrawardῑ's ḥikmat al-ishrāq is one of the three main philosophical schools in the history of Islamic knowledge and has the features of an independent school of thought. However, Western scholars such as Henry Corbin (d. 1978) and John Walbridge, and even some scholars in Iran–Suhrawardῑ's birthplace–have presented this school as a revival of ḥikmah. Suhrawardῑ's (1154–1191)1 emphasises that the source of true ḥikmah is 'the Eternal Leaven2'; he explicitly states that he received the ḥikmat al-ishrāq directly from this Leaven on an amazing day.3 At the same time, in Suhrawardῑ's works, two phrases, 'Khusrawānῑ Leaven' and 'Pythagorean Leaven' are used; from Suhrawardῑ's point of view, these two ... • Shi'as in Britain: The 19th & Early 20th Centuries (Part I)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Seyyed Jamal al-Din Asad Abadi (aka al-Afghani) was born in 1838/9 in the town of Asad Abad, the centre of the district of Asad Abad near the ancient city of Hamadan, the centre of the Hamadan province in Iran. He has been praised as "the great champion of Pan-Islamism" in the 19th century2, "the first eloquent exponent of anti-Imperialism"3, "the first Islamic reformer of the 19th century"4, and "the 'Oriental Philosopher' (filsof-e sharq) and the Martin Luther of the Islamic world"5. His sojourn in London, though rather short, was in pursuit of his long-life project, namely, to help Muslims to rise to the challenges of modernity and come out of their 'long holiday in history'. His complex, multi-layered and ... Read More

  • Le Chiisme. Clés historiques et théologiques by Ameer Jaje
           (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Readers who are unfamiliar with Shi'a Islam or confused about its differences with Sunni Islam will benefit most from Le Chiisme. Clés historiques et théologiques, although first-hand accounts and the author's linking of ritual with belief make this book interesting and relevant for even more educated readers. The mixture of first-hand accounts and scholarly analysis provides a brief, yet at times, detailed overview of the history, practices, beliefs, and culture of Shi'a Islam. Jaje connects historical events with hadiths, rituals, and doctrinal development within this energetic and passionate branch of Islam. By the end of the book, readers clearly see that the religion has such a strong hold on believers because ... Read More

  • Art, Allegory and the Rise of Shi'ism in Iran 1487-1565 by Chad Kia
           (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Gone are the days when poetry was a public performance. Since pre-Islamic times in the Muslim world poets functioned in the public domain as historians, soothsayers and propagandists. Ranging from the Griots of West Africa to Middle Eastern popular poetry praising one tribe (qitʿah) and denigrating an opposing one (hija'), the spoken word was very much live audience orientated. The period of scrutiny in Kia's book considers the poetry of Sufi masters like Jāmī, Rūmī, Ibn-'Arabī and the allusions one master made about another. Indeed, as Kia elucidates it by imitating a verse that the poet would acknowledge his debt to his predecessor; in so doing, however, he would attempt to 'outdo' the other, thus promoting his ... • The Prophet's Heir: The Life of Ali ibn Abi Talib by Hassan Abbas (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: After the Prophet Muhammad (S), ʿAlī ibn Abi Ṭālib (A) has no parallel in terms of the amount of attention he has received in Islamic literature. As Hossein Nasr informs us, he has inspired scholars and mystics of different religions and regions1. Therefore, restricting ʿAlī to Shi'a Muslims or Islam alone would be a great injustice to his personality and the status he holds.A glimpse of the literature produced by his devotees—which includes Christians and Hindus as well as agnostics—informs readers that he was the mystic of all mystics, the helper of the oppressed and poor, the flagbearer of justice and patience, and the possessor of knowledge. Although his enemies (both in his time and more recently) have tried ... Read More

  • Encounters with the Hidden Imam in Early and Pre-Modern Twelver Shīʿī
           Islam by Omid Ghaemmaghami (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Encounters with the Hidden Imam in Early and Pre-Modern Twelver Shīʿī Islam is a published PhD by Omid Ghaemmaghami, obtained at the University of Toronto in 2020. As stated in the title, it specifically addresses the issue of how texts from the Twelver Shi'i tradition tackle the subject of whether or not it is possible to meet the Twelfth Imam during the Major Occultation, since he is meant to have issued a final decree (or tawqī), declaring that anyone who claims to have seen him after the end of the Minor Occultation is 'a lying imposter' (recorded in Shaykh al-Ṣadūq's (d. 991) Kamāl al-dīn wa tamām al-niʿma, 484).The book consists of four chapters and two appendices. Chapter One is entitled 'The Unknown, the ... Read More

Abstract: Arabic and Persian terms that do not have standard spellings in English are transliterated according to the following system:The definite article 'al-'(always followed by a hyphen) should not be assimilated when preceded by a preposition or particle that is written separately from the following noun, such as wa, min, ilā, ʿan, ʿalā, fī, and lā; e.g. wa al-bayt, min al-bayt, ilā al-bayt, ʿan al-bayt, ʿalā al-bayt, fī al-bayt, lā al-bayt.When al-is preceded by a preposition that is not written separately from the following noun, such as bi, ka, and li, it should be assimilated in the following way: bil-insān, lil-insān, kal-insān.The spelling of the following words should be noted. • The Theory of the Imamate in the Work of al-Sharīf
           al-Murtaḍā

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In Knowledge and the Sacred, Seyyed Hossein Nasr speaks beautifully about the ancient Oriental sage, for whom intelligence "is endowed with the possibility of knowing the Absolute."1 The theological diversity of the pre-modern Islamic tradition, however, presents a tremendous challenge to this perspective. The role of rationality in arriving at Truth was a fundamental debate that spawned multiple literary genres and even resulted in an inquisition.2 The Muʿtazilis, the promulgators par excellence of this theological doctrine that drew heavily on the Hellenized philosophical tradition,3 articulated a vision of reason that was implied to be "transcendent of all particular histories."4 This narrow vision, which ...
