  • Construction and application of third diagonal in cyclic quadrilaterals by
           Nārāyaṇa Paṇḍita

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract In his comprehensive mathematical treatise Gaṇitakaumudī, Nārāyaṇa Paṇḍita has presented a nuanced, systematic, and elaborate exposition of cyclic quadrilaterals. Here, besides discussing its key properties, Nārāyaṇa fashions a “third diagonal" by interchanging two sides of a cyclic quadrilateral. He also provides a variety of mathematical expressions for computing the area, altitude, circumradius, and so on of a cyclic quadrilateral. It turns out that some of these expressions come out very elegant when we involve the third diagonal in them. In this paper, apart from bringing out the verses of Nārāyaṇa, we also present modern mathematical derivations for the results given by him pertaining to the cyclic quadrilateral.

  • Reinvestigating the science and engineering behind the architectural
marvels of Ahom dynasty in pre-colonial Assam (1228–1826 CE)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract The Ahom dynasty, which thrived in the region of Assam from 1228 to 1826 CE, left an indelible mark on the cultural, political, and scientific landscape of pre-colonial Assam. This era witnessed a unique amalgamation of science, nature, and architectural prowess, which played a vital role in shaping the civilization of the time. The Ahoms, a Tai ethnic group from present-day Yunnan province in China, migrated to Assam and established a powerful kingdom that flourished for centuries. The construction techniques and materials used in the Ahom architectures have been the subject of various discussions and investigations. However, while some generic discussion is available on the topic, a more scientific study incorporating the chemical properties of the natural materials used as additives and admixtures in lime mortar would provide deeper insights into their functionalities. This paper aims to conduct a comprehensive scientific analysis to explore and understand the specific functionalities of various natural materials incorporated into the architectural construction of Ahom structures, thereby enriching our understanding of their unique architectural utilities. The primary objective is to discern how these materials enhanced lime mortar’s functionality in architectural construction. A thorough review of existing literature, including scholarly works, research papers, and historical texts, has been conducted. The findings are synthesized to draw meaningful conclusions regarding the chemical properties and functionalities of the natural materials used in Ahom architectural construction.

  • Equinoctial full moon of the Brahmāṇḍa Purāṇa and the nakṣatra
solar zodiac starting from summer solstice

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract The first theoretical system of tracking sun in the tropical annual cycle is cryptically mentioned in the Maitrāyaṇīya Āraṇyaka Upaniṣat (MAU) of the Kṛṣṇa Yajurveda, as the southern sojourn of sun starting at the summer solstice. This is called maghādyaṁ, the first point of the maghā nakṣatra, identified most likely with the early morning visibility of ε-Leo, near the azimuth of the sunrise point on the horizon as observed at Kurukshetra. Twenty seven equal nakṣatra sectors named in the traditional sequential order cover one tropical circuit of sun of 366 days with the winter solstice falling exactly at the middle of the śraviṣṭhā sector. Even though MAU mentions each nakṣatra to be made up of four quarters, no practical application of this ¼-nakṣatra sky part amounting to 3º20´ in longitude is seen in Vedic texts till we come to the Brahmāṇḍa Purāṇa, a text closer to the Vedas. This Purāṇa states, observed equinoctial full moon positions corresponding to spring equinox at ¼-kṛttikā and autumn equinox at ¾-viśākha exactly 180º apart as they should be. This statement is analysed in this paper by computer simulation of full moon time series for the years − 2400 to − 800 to show that the Purāṇa data would be realistically valid for the period 1980 BCE to 1610 BCE. It is further demonstrated that the Purāṇa has followed the maghādi system of solar nakṣatra system stated in the MAU. The central epoch circa 1800 BCE of this maghādi equal nakṣatra solar zodiac got modified, due to precession effects, to the śraviṣṭhādi scheme of Parāśara, Vṛddha Garga and Lagadha dateable to circa 1300 BCE.

  • The practice of folk medicine by the indigenous people of Sundarbans: A
           historical analysis

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract For a couple of decades, the ‘history of science, technology, and medicine’ (HISTEM) has received widespread attention from scholars worldwide. Historians have paid adequate attention to exploring India's scientific and technological contributions to the global history of science. Simultaneously, the “codified” and “institutionalized” forms of certain medicinal practices and health-seeking traditions of the Indian subcontinent have achieved international recognition for their medicinal values to maintain good health. However, there are many indigenous (tribal/autochthonous/adivashis/marginal) communities whose medicinal practices have remained beyond the purview of HISTEM. In such a background, an intensive study has been undertaken in the context of Indian Sundarbans located in the southern part of North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas Districts of West Bengal. Here, the indigenous communities have developed and preserved their medicinal practices, preventive food habits, and folk culture with their long experience of interactions with the available natural elements. This project thus seeks to construct a brief history of diseases, medicinal practices, inheritance and transmission of medicinal knowledge, and the socioeconomic background of the indigenous healers and retailers of medicine of Indian Sundarbans.

  • Composition and characterisation of ancient lime mortar of Gopal Krishna
           temple, Alandi, India

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract The cementing lime mortars used in the construction of twelfth century CE  Gopal Krishna temple at Western India Alandi were investigated for its mineralogical, chemical and compositional characteristics. The investigative studies were performed using particle size studies, XRF, XRD, FTIR, SEM–EDX and thermal analysis of the mortar. Though the monument is situated in Sahyadri range of Deccan basaltic trap, the mortar is marked by mixing of aggregates rich in hydrated oxides of alumina and iron. Further studies revealed natural formation of laterite capping on basaltic hillock that preferentially weathered and sediments deposited along the river basin sourced as aggregates in mortar preparation. The lime rich binder has mainly inclusion of sub-angular to sub-rounded coarse grain lateritic aggregates. The clay impurities have reduced the purity of lime as observed through thermal analysis. The data will help prepare a compatible mortar for restoration.

  • Restoration and conservation of Sāncipāt manuscripts of Assam for
           preserving in ordinary rural setup

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Tens of thousands of Sāncipāt manuscripts, written on beautiful folios called Sāncipāt made of Sānci-bark, were popular in Assam from the early medieval period till the early twentieth century and are testimonies of a rich cultural and literary heritage. Baring a small fraction conserved under a passive environment in libraries and museums, most of these manuscripts are traditionally stored under ordinary rural conditions for occasional reading. Properly prepared Sāncipāt can survive centuries due to robust physical strength and resistance against fungus, insects, and humidity. Sāncipāt was traditionally coated with antifungal, insect-repellant, and decorative Hāitāl and Hengul pigments and subsequently coated with humidity-resistant natural varnishing called Lā-coating. However, natural weathering for centuries has caused damage to Sāncipāt manuscripts, particularly those without Hengul-Hāitāl and Lā-coatings. These manuscripts urgently need to be preserved as and where they are adequate since conservation of the huge number of manuscripts in a passive environment is impractical in the rural setup. This paper shows that some chemicals used in the conservation of paper have harmful effects on Sāncipāt, which markedly differ from paper in physical and chemical characteristics. We also propose a method for restoring and conserving Sāncipāt manuscripts based on the traditional method of their preparation without using any such chemicals. This involves mild physical cleaning, mending with fresh Sāncipāt and natural gum, applying antifungal and insect-repellant pigments in the free spaces, and finally applying Lā-coating (varnishing) in the traditional way. Results of a piloting of the method with fourteen manuscripts have been presented.

  • Origin, introduction, and cultural history of capsicum in India

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract This communication reviews the origin of capsicum in Mesoamerica, its early cultivation, and transmission into Europe, India, and Kumaon. Capsicum was introduced into India in two ways: first, by the Portuguese in South India, and second, by Arabian traders in North India. However, in Kumaon, it was first brought by Arabian traders who were indirectly assigned to trade capsicum with other products. Capsicum contains critical nutritional substances, including omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids and essential elements. It is also a powerful antioxidant. It has been proved that capsicums are not only hot to the taste but also high in nutritional content and medicinal value. The nutritional chemo-profile, novel cultivars, new varieties and how pungency or hotness measured in Scovilee Heat Unit (SHU) are discussed. Capsicums' status in Kumaon is studied, and their Kumaoni names, etymology, philology, cultural uses, and origin of the new variety are all discussed. The top ten hottest chillies in India and worldwide are listed and discussed in terms of their hotness.

  • Use of the concept of derivative in the computation of vyatīpāta
           in two Kerala texts

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract It is well known that the concept of derivative was used in finding the rates of motion of planets in Indian astronomy texts beginning with Laghumānasa (c. 932 CE). In his Vāsanābhāṣya of his own work, Siddhāntaśiromaṇi (c.1150 CE), Bhāskarācārya explains the necessity of using the concept of tātkālikagati (instantaneous rates of motion) of planets, which involves using the derivative of the sine function, and discusses the retrograde motion of planets also, using the concept. Later, Kerala texts like Tantrasaṅgraha also discuss this concept. In two Kerala texts, Karaṇottama of Acyuta Piṣāraṭi (late sixteenth century) and Dṛkkaraṇa (1608 CE), the use of the concept of derivative is used in a very different context, namely, computations pertaining to vyatīpāta. In this paper, we describe the algorithms involving the ‘krāntigati’ or the rate of change of the declinations of the Sun and the Moon involving the derivative conept, in these two texts.

  • Mahādevī-sāriṇī: A unique table providing true
           longitudes of planets

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract Finding the true longitudes of planets had always been a challenge for early astronomers. As keen observers, they noted the small drift of the planets from the calculated positions and rectified them from time to time. Such efforts are traceable in many texts. One such table is the Mahādevī-sāriṇī of the fourteenth century. The paper discusses the methodology of reading the true positions directly from the table using the mean positions and compares it with some later manuals of the seventeenth century. An example of the application of the conjunction of December 21, 2020, reveals that these tables for true longitudes are relevant even today. The efforts to improve accuracies achievable from naked-eye observations can be traced.

  • Geometry of prāṇakalāntara in the Lagnaprakaraṇa

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract The prāṇakalāntara, which is the difference between the longitude of a point on the ecliptic and its corresponding right ascension, is an important parameter in the computation of the lagna (ascendant). Mādhava, in his Lagnaprakaraṇa, proposes six different methods for determining the prāṇakalāntara. Kolachana et al. (Indian J Hist Sci 53(1):1–15, 2018) have discussed these techniques and their underlying rationale in an earlier paper. In this paper, we bring out the geometric significance of these computations, which was not fully elaborated upon in the earlier study. We also show how some of the sophisticated relations can be simply derived using similar triangles.

  • Advent, appropriation, and aesthetics of electric light in the princely
state of Jammu and Kashmir, (1900–1920)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract At the start of the twentieth century, Jammu and Kashmir witnessed an energy transition in its urban centres of Srinagar and Jammu, where electric lights entered the illumination mix along with the already existing oil lamps. They did not simply replace the oil-lit lamps as access to electric lighting was strictly determined on colonial, racial, and class lines. The electric lights also provided an apparatus of surveillance at night for the state and deepened the already existing divisions of urban–rural and backward–modern. In the first decade of the twentieth century, electricity was mostly limited to the palaces, residency offices, the silk factory, and the telegraph office. From 1910 onwards, there was a large-scale extension of electric lighting in the cities of Srinagar and Jammu, and even the reverse salients of financial cuts due to the first world war did not deter this electrical expansion. Colonial electrification in European colonies, like South Asia, has been seen to be driven by the biblical imperative of ‘Let there be light’, to literally spread electric light in colonies that they considered lingering in ‘darkness’. These spectacles were symbolized by palaces and government offices shining with electric light, especially at night, whereas the areas of the natives were lingering in proverbial darkness. After elaborating on these overviews, this paper commences to problematize the aesthetics of light and darkness and study how electric light was being appropriated in the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir from 1900 to 1920.

  • Development of amateur astronomy in independent India with special
reference to West Bengal: A historical study

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract The study of the development of amateur astronomy in independent India is an unexplored research arena. Though some articles have been published, detailed research on the theme is badly needed. This research project humbly attempts to explore the subject and tries to unearth the history of multifaceted initiatives to make astronomy popular through non-professional activities. It tries to trace the history of the development of amateur astronomy in India with particular reference to West Bengal. Here, the initiatives taken by individuals and organizations in the study and development of astronomy have been evaluated. Many amateur astronomy clubs were initiated in many places in the country. The study tries to trace the growth and development of some of those clubs. In the historical context of nineteenth and twentieth centuries, it narrates the journey of amateur astronomers in their personal capacity as well as a part of their organizational activities in independent India.

  • Mountains of corpses: the deadliest attack of the 1918–19 influenza
pandemic in the city of Calcutta

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Abstract The 100th anniversary of the 1918–19 influenza pandemic provides us an opportunity to study the properties, spread and impact of pandemics and devise new strategies to mitigate their effect. The present discussion is an untold story about a noxious influenza pandemic that strechted its deadly scratches in the city of Calcutta in 1918–19 with an unexpected toll. It is not known whether Calcutta became infected by ship or by rail. Calcutta appeared to be the main disseminating centre for the disease in Bengal and its spread was undoubtedly because of the relatively excellent railway communication. Against such a backdrop, the present attempt sets out to explore (i) the spreading pattern of the pandemic (ii) preventive measures taken by the people and by the government (iii) how the government handled this challenge (iv) the general attitude regarding the pandemic, and (v) the role of the native press in reporting and handling this pandemic. This research effort has utilized archival documents, microfilms, census reports, books, memoirs, and gazetteers to divulge people’s experience of the colonial bureaucracy, an ineffective public health care system, and its negligence. The study tries to set an example to understand the post-pandemic strategies so that prevention and control programmes can be tailored to corresponding changes in epidemiological response.

Abstract: Abstract This paper argues that nationalist ideology influenced the writings of Goan elites who joined their Indian counterparts. The latter glorified the pre-modern history, literature, art, and architecture of India as a response to the colonial assertions of its superiority. In the case of Goa, the colonial authorities propounded the concept of Goa Dourada, or golden Goa under Portuguese rule. The local elites countered this concept through ‘Goa Indica’, thus exhibiting the relationship of colonial Goa with colonial India. In the process, the scholars such as Menezes Braganza, Panduranga Pissurlencar, and Adeatado Baretto discussed the contribution of ancient Indians to the field of science and technology. The glorification of ancient Indian science and technology contributed to the rise of ‘pseudo-science’, which is considered a byproduct of the anti-colonial movement. However, the rise of ‘pseudo-science’ was an unavoidable development, particularly in the colonial period. The Goan historians, while reconstructing the history of science, followed their counterparts in British India to show that Goa was a part of India. Scholars were able to achieve national unity in the pre and post-colonial periods by studying science and technology.
