  • Adjusting a Textbook of RFL to E-Learning

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 1137-1150
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e1137
Authors : Ella Zoidze, Eugenia Matveeva, Tatiana Makarova, Maria Molchanova, Elena Morozova : The article addresses the issue of using a traditional textbook, an essential learning tool, in e-learning environment by supplementing and adjusting it to the digital format. Regarding e-learning as an educational process based on interactive electronic means of storing and providing information the authors outline the main ways of transforming an existing RFL textbook into the mode appropriate for effective e-learning and e-teaching. While reviewing literature, the notion of an electronic textbook is explored as well as its difference from a traditional textbook. The authors describe their experience of a synchronous type of e-learning and promote the usage of tasks that allow students to revise the information independently and practise the skills acquired in class. The article dwells on how the educational content of the textbook “Russian for Beginners” by G.M. Levina was modified in order to be used for teaching RFL learners online. The resulting benefits of a new web-based version of an RFL textbook are analyzed. HTML PDF

  • Educational Text as a Vector Dominating Intercultural Communication

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 1127-1136
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e1127
Authors : Anastasia Zinkovskaya, Veronika Katermina, Vladimir Plaksin : The article under consideration shows that in the modern world of communication and educational needs an educational text performs several functions at the same time: educational and developing socio-cultural competence of the student which in its turn ensures immersion in learning a foreign language in the social and cultural environment. The study of the educational text as a vector of the formation of intercultural communication makes it possible to analyze these and other important functions based on the material of textbooks for students of Russian as a foreign language as well as the English language and it makes it possible to identify the technologies necessary in the study of a foreign language from the standpoint of intercultural communication. In this regard, the actual tasks of linguoaxiological studies and linguodidactics are the revision of the system of formed linguistic educational trajectories and attitudes. As a method for studying a theoretical part, axiological and axiometric methods were chosen in order to describe the interaction of three basic constituents – “language – consciousness – culture” of the studied language. The results of this study are of practical importance in choosing an effective educational text that will help to develop a student's cultural, cognitive and intellectual orientation. HTML PDF

  • Building learners’ academic autonomy based on textbook series for
           studying German «Im Klartext A2»

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 1114-1126
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e1114
Authors : Evgenia Zimina, Julia Mueller, Olga Printsipalova : Cardinal transformation in the education system transfers the mode of education participants to a higher level of a learner’s individual responsibility for the academic results. In this respect, academic autonomy has a special significance together with its realization in the education system and its relevance for textbook series. The article gives the structure and content analysis of «Im Klartext A2» as a new generation educational kit. The purpose is to single out components for a learner’s independent work to form academic autonomy skills. To perform the research content and structure analysis methods were applied as well as a classifying one. The result of the research is defining the task types possible to exploit as part of learners’ individual class work. Most exercises and tasks from the workbook are to do as home task, their correctness is checked by keys. The workbook also contains tests with keys and a self-assessment scheme, which encourages development of self-assessment and reflection skills. The curriculum aimed at pronunciation, auditive and speech skills development is duplicated on the multimedia education platform ed.mgimo and enables learners to portion the material for revision and mastering skills by themselves, which leads to individualization of studies. The research data and results may be taken as a starting point of present textbooks and educational kits’ analysis to take out the components possible to use as learners’ independent work and, further on, to heed in the new educational training kit concept. • Multimedia Study Aids in Teaching Creative Foreign Language Reading:
           Personal-Activity Approach

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 1082-1093
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e1082
Authors : Larisa Vikulova, Svetlana Gerasimova, Irina Makarova, Ekaterina Vishnevskaya : The paper covers developing and testing experience of interactive multimedia educational content designed for teaching creative foreign language reading. The article shows how students can develop their creative skills which manifest themselves when students try to make their own intellectual and informational content based on what they have read. We prove that as an educational resource an individually oriented study aid can be considered as a base that extrinsically motivates students to study foreign languages in higher school. As a topical issue we see web-based creative reading within the framework of collaborative educational setting led by personal-activity approach that prompts students to be actively involved in the educational process. Interactive multimedia online boards have become the primary focus of the paper. They contribute to building up collaborative learning environment and facilitate the development of the new teaching organizational forms. The paper contains several student cooperation formats on creative reading of the philosophical novella “The Little Prince” by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry while using multimedia study aids on the Miro interactive whiteboard. • Strategies for Shaping Student’s National and Cultural Identity in
           Teaching “Cross-Cultural Theory Introduction”

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 1065-1081
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e1065
Authors : Larisa Vikulova, Svetlana Gerasimova, Evgeniya Serebrennikova, Elina Nersesova : This paper explains the didactic domain concept formed within the strategic matrix of the educational discourse related to teaching cross-cultural communication theory. It is stated that intercultural communication competenceis improved on certain strategies taking into account the organization of training in the light of the cognitive opposition "friend or other", acquiring a cross-cultural reflexive way of interaction, and further focus on value attitudes and participants’ dominance in the communication act. The authors share their experience of writing the manual which corresponds to the effective teaching techniques. The manual topically based on understanding national and cultural symbols in innovative polyphonic and polycode format, ingrained in media network, opts for analytical review and more precise study of theoretical methodology. The competency-based approach focuses on instrumental pragmatic approach to cross-cultural communication that is challenging, dialogic and creative. The article provides value- and practice-oriented outlook on the key strategies featured in the manual: assimilating information strategy (informative strategy); comparing two or more cultures reflexive strategy; valorization of native and foreign cultures strategy. • Workbook as Tool for Motivating Students to Study Grammar

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 1051-1064
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e1051
Authors : Ekaterina Vasilieva, Oxana Dubnyakova, Olga Suslova : The problem of the quality of textbooks and workbooks has always been relevant. Their making is always a rather difficult and time-consuming task. It is important to understand that the textbook and workbook are a single unit within the complex systemic whole, encompassing also subject concepts, federal state educational standards, basic educational programs, etc. The purpose of this article is to describe and analyze the “Conjuguer: c'est facile” (2015, 2016, 2017) series of author's French grammar workbooks for beginners. Using this example, the authors of the article emphasize that well-written and appropriately compiled teaching resources stimulate the cognitive activity of students, turning the process of mastering a foreign language in general, and its grammar, in particular, into an entertaining experience. The main approach to the study of the problem is a systemic one. Despite all the variety of various materials, teachers are encouraged to create their own teaching aids tailored to the specific kind of their audience, as well as to their specific needs. The authors come to the conclusion that the effectiveness of a textbook on French grammar depends on a number of criteria, including careful selection of material for the formation of linguistic, speech, socio-cultural, social, discursive and compensatory (strategic) competencies; logical organization and presentation of material; inclusion of exercises implying a great degree of participation; the presence of test assignments for monitoring student’s progress. In addition, a visual presentation of the material plays an important role in enhancing the cognitive activity of students, increasing their interest in mastering grammatical skills and abilities. • Lesson on Russian Literature based on the communicative-activity approach
           (literary tale)

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 1029-1050
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e1029
Authors : Kuralay Urazayevа, Gulnur Yerik, Aliya Aitpayeva : The article is devoted to the communicative-activity approach to the study of Russian literature by schoolchildren for whom Russian is not their native language. The article presents the experience of designing lessons for the study of the tale of O. Wilde and A. Pushkin. The examples of achieving performance in terms of skills and competencies, the implementation of integrated teaching of speech activity, a combination of types of educational activities are shown. The experience of didactics is generalized from the standpoint of motivation to study a second language and literature, and the formation of effective communication skills. The fairy tale "The Nightingale and the Rose" by O. Wilde is considered as a model of learning from the standpoint of enhancing the empathy of students, adapting the fairy tale to the perception of the listener. Communication exercises are developed using cultural linguistics, the development of the student's linguistic competence, the ratio of the communicative and pragmatic sides of the lesson, using the experience of textbooks in a fixed format. The development of the recommended didactic resource takes into account the directions of the reform in the secondary school of Kazakhstan. The method of practical teaching of literature is described from the standpoint of achieving measurable results, the implementation of text-centric teaching, integrated teaching of speech activity, a combination of types of educational activities, comparative study of English and Russian literary fairy tales. It has been substantiated that the practical task of teaching, the assessment of students' answers as an element of learning, contribute to their motivation to study a second language and literature, the development of critical thinking, and a creative approach. • Training manuals focused on people with visual impairments for students of
           defectology

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 1018-1028
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e1018
Authors : Nadya Tyurina, Olga Sokolova : This article examines the possibility of using paintings that reflect the image of a blind person as educational content for the training of teachers of special and inclusive school. Foreign research, as well as sociological, cultural and historical analysis of literary sources and content analysis of thematic works of painting and graphics allow us to admit the possibility and significance of using this approach in the educational process. Most of the visual arts depicting the blind reflect the current attitude of society towards them and can influence society, creating both positive and negative stereotypes through specific artistic tools. However, in the pedagogical practice of higher education, the resource of art does not find sufficient reflection. The research results can be useful for the authors of modern teaching manuals that provide training for teachers of the defectological profile. HTML PDF

  • Tertiary Level Foreign Language Textbook Through the Current Educational
           Paradigm Lens

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 1009-1017
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e1009
Authors : Olga Trunova, Natalia Trunova : Proposing the distinctions between internal and external linguistics, F. de Saussure could hardly anticipate a fantastic impact, which social, geopolitical and technological progress (an external phenomena) would exert on the linguistic paradigm (an internal entity) change. Anyway, this influence is traceable. The increasingly globalizing world, appearance of trans-national corporations, cooperative events, broadening academic exchanges promote the establishment of the English language in the status of a lingua franca. This motivates and stimulates the desire and necessity to learn English not only in its capacity of commonplace communication practices (EGP) but as professional communication tool (ESP). The goals of mastering these two counterpart acquirements turn out to be different, the methods have to be improved, the tools of teaching to be varied. The conceptual statement of the undertaken research establishes reciprocal dependency relations in dichotomies “paradigm – method” and “goal – tool”. The shift of linguistic paradigm is externally determined. The claim of the article is that alongside all the obvious developments in educational domain there are constituents, which retain their position though they may change their formal attire. One of these constants is the textbook whose functional loads are essential for it supplies thematically and professionally relevant information, brings the teaching materials to order and designates the learning algorithm. • Historical Narrative in Contemporary Blogger Practices vs History Textbook

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 995-1008
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0995
Authors : Elena Tokareva : Introduction. This paper continues to explore the characteristics of contemporary blogosphere, which has become one of the ways to spread historical knowledge. Blog creators have become direct participants in the formation of our country's history. The purpose of this paper is to examine the ways in which history is presented on contemporary websites, on blogs, and the features of presenting history in contemporary school textbooks. The focus on education in the study of blogs on historical subjects is necessary and topical: historical narrative is embedded in the public space, including the Internet, which is a more attractive source of information for modern schoolchildren than books. Results. There are anonymous blogs on the Internet whose creators claim that their content is historical. The content of such resources is of course not related to public history. Narrative of public history is linked to collective memory, to history as academic discipline, and has a fundamental historical significance. In a modern history textbook linear historical narrative is fragmented into separate stories by means of a special design; an attempt has been made to create the situation of getting information in a way familiar to the individual with fragmented thinking. Direct participation of professional historians in the creation of public history, its development, including the information and telecommunication network of the Internet will reduce the threat of chaotic development of public history, will significantly improve the quality of the historical narrative in the public sphere, will make modern blogs and history textbooks mutually complementary ways of presenting history. • New Type of University Textbook: Teaching Linguistic Research Fundamentals
           in Post-COVID Research Space

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 984-994
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0984
Authors : Irina Tivyaeva, Olga Suleimanova, Marina Fomina : As the COVID-19 crisis was still gaining its momentum in early 2020, it became increasingly clear that the world would never go back to its normal and striving for a positive outcome in any life sphere would ultimately involve reassessing pre-pandemic norms and setting up new reference points to make up for coronavirus disruptions. While some industries could afford at least a short timeout to readjust and refigure their practices, education was not the one to venture into delays and adjournments. No matter what level of training they worked at, educators were to provide an immediate response to the coronavirus-instigated realities. Designed as a case study, this paper provides an empirical account of developing and implementing a new type of university textbook meant to address issues of the emerging global learning environment, keep up with students’ and instructors’ demands in professional areas, and offer hands-on solutions to new format-induced challenges. The study focuses on the concept of the post-COVID university textbook meeting high standards of academic programs and complying with hybrid training models, examines relevant methodological approaches, and provides an analytical report on integrating a linguistic research textbook based on the novel approach into the training process at the Department of Linguistics and Translation Studies of Moscow City University. The proposed concept of the new type of university textbook designed to help students succeed in virtual and blended learning environments has a high application potential across subject areas and disciplines. • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 971-983
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0971
Authors : Elena G. Tareva : The paper represents the study of the ways of implementation of innovations into the system of foreign language teaching of university students. The most interesting issue is the innovative potential of a foreign language textbook. The authors give the arguments to prove the need to modify this means of teaching professional intercultural communication to ensure its individual, personal and competence orientation. The researchers analyze the main characteristics of modern textbooks on a foreign language, argue for the need to change their structure and content. The article gives the data of empirical survey of teachers’ attitude towards a modern textbook of a foreign language. Modern trends in education that require changes in the design of the textbook are as follows: informatization, digitalization, intercultural orientation of the educational process, focus on personal self-development and national self-identification of the students. It is necessary to specify the characteristics of an “open-type foreign language textbook”, its specific features. There is an attempt to distinguish the content and structural organization of the open textbook from traditional teaching materials. HTML PDF

  • Students’ Strategies for Cognition: Organizing Culture-Oriented
           Information in Textbook

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 958-970
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0958
Authors : Elena G. Tareva, Ekaterina Troinikova : The informational dimension of the multicultural world transforms the context of intercultural socialization of an individual, which presupposes the formation of a person in a multicultural society who owns various ways of constructing intercultural dialogue. There is a special requirement for the development of didactic tools that help a person to master effective methods of intercultural interaction in the global information environment. Strategies for achieving intercultural dialogue using the potential of the information environment surrounding a person come to the fore. The purpose of the article is to determine the information and cognitive strategies that students at a linguistic university could apply working culturally specific material of a foreign language textbook, aimed at intercultural socialization of a person striving to achieve understanding in the conditions of intercultural dialogue. The authors substantiate the structure of a foreign language textbook, designed for preparing students at a linguistic university for “dialogue comprehension”. They present three stages of working with culture-oriented material: orientation in the case-study of intercultural interaction, making a reasonable decision to comply cultural and conceptual pictures of the world, transfer of dialogue contexts into intercultural interaction. The article describes the strategies of information and cognitive activity of an individual built in the textbook in the situation of “person – person” and “person – object” intercultural interaction. That provides the possibility for an individual to reach understanding in the process of a dialogue. A set of case-studies, communicative-dialogue and culturally creative didactic practices is aimed at mastering by students the strategies of working with culture-oriented material of a foreign language textbook. • Global-cultural and national-cultural self-determination of students as a
           new challenge of education

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 933-945
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0933
Authors : Irina Tagunova, Oksana Dolgaya, Igor Sukhin, Nataliya Selivanova : The world of education continues to be presented by national education systems that are more or less integrated into international programs and initiatives. Students in modern conditions of digitalization, internationalization and mobility receive education from different sources and contexts. All of them reflect the values, attitudes and worldview of their carriers. In such a situation, the national-cultural and global-cultural self-determination of students develops. The fact that it is possible to form multidirectional identities is a challenge to education. The purpose of the article was to identify the sources and contexts of the formation of different identities. The article is theoretical in nature. Analysis, communication and interpretation are methods which were used. The methodological approach of A. Straus was used as a methodological base. As a result of the study, it was revealed that the main sources and contexts of the formation of the national and cultural identity of students in most countries are national education systems. The main sources and contexts for the formation of the global identity of students included global education, international organizations and the Internet. The article shows how ambiguously different countries assess the value of the identity, which of the countries are ready to sacrifice national self-determination, and which are not. The issues of national-cultural and global-cultural self-determination of students can hardly be considered. HTML PDF

      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0920
Authors : Nadezhda Stepanova, Irina Amelina, Mariya Gromenko, Tatyana Kovaleva : The relevance of using personality development potential of literary texts in order to form the necessary complex of knowledge about the most significant spiritual and moral values of the Russian people is due to the situation of a complete transition with no alternatives to teaching in a distance format at the preparatory faculty. The article examines the experience of using the potential of the texts from Russian classical literature for personal self-development and self-realization of foreign students at Russian as a foreign language lessons (pre-university stage) in conditions where direct immersion in the language is impossible. Such literary works allow foreign students to begin their acquaintance with Russian history and culture, to form basic ideas about the values of Russian society and the mentality of Russian people, to understand the degree of similarity and difference between Russian and native cultures, which generally contribute to their adaptation to Russian reality and integration into the educational multicultural space of the university. The approaches, the universal and specific requirements for the formation of an electronic educational course in RFL are presented. The course can be accessed in “Electronic information and educational environment of SWSU. SWSU’s Courses” on Moodle platform. The platform thanks to its functional capabilities, allows to present educational material in various forms, to vary the methods of students’ independent educational activities, to organize the necessary audiovisual support in mastering the Russian language within the elementary, basic and first certification levels (A1, A2, B1). DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0905
Authors : Nadezhda Stepanova, Irina Amelina, Mariya Gromenko, Tatyana Kovaleva : The relevance of creating electronic textbooks on RFL is due to the search for new forms of education and interaction between teachers and students in a distance learning format. The article discusses a model of an electronic course on RFL, which is implemented at the stage of pre-university training at the South-West State University. The textbook is integrated in “Electronic information and educational environment of SWSU. SWSU’s Courses” on Moodle platform, which allows, thanks to its functionality, to present educational material in various forms, vary the methods of managing students’ independent educational activities, and organize the necessary audiovisual support in language learning. The basis for the creation of this electronic resource is a communicative-activity approach aimed at the formation and development of all types of speech activity. The authors state the results of a survey of foreign students on the implementation of the model of learning via the electronic resource. The survey made it possible to adjust the materials of the electronic resource, as well as the forms and methods of work in remote mode, taking into account the needs of foreign students. The proposed model of the electronic course is aimed at the realization of teaching foreign students in accordance with the requirements necessary for mastering the Russian language within the framework of Elementary, Basic and First certification levels (A1, A2, B1). DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0894
Authors : Nataly Spichko : This article analyzes classical and modern works of fiction in English textbooks for grades 10-11 (recommended for work at school by government) as material for analyzing the cultural characteristics of the country to which the author of the works belongs. National character is one of the most significant features of the culture. It is true for the English culture as well as for the Russian one and may seem one of important features to be studied and discussed in class.. The article gives prominent features of classical and modern fiction, reveals its impact on the students of 10-11 grade of the Russian secondary schools and figures out why it is important for the English textbooks. Students find the features of the national character from classical and contemporary fiction, get in contact with culture of the foreign country and analyse the authentic material in general. • Foreign Language Textbook for Teaching Atypical Students: Designing
           Didactic Materials

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 878-893
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0878
Authors : Galina Sorokovykh, Natalia Pribylova, Svetlana Staritsyna : The article considers the need to develop author’s didactic materials as applications to modern foreign language textbooks, which is associated with the difficulty of creating a universal textbook taking into account the specifics of the limitations of a schoolchild who has problems in socialization, learning, development and education. The article highlights the peculiarity of preparing a future foreign language teacher for designing didactic support for sections of a foreign language textbook within university elective courses. The leading methods to study the problem of designing didactic support for atypical students are: 1) theoretical methods: analysis of psychological, pedagogical, methodological works of foreign and Russian authors on the problem under review, comparison, generalization, design, modeling, interpretation of the information received; 2) empirical methods: observation, testing, questionnaires, conversation with students, research of future Bachelors of Education project results; 3) methods of mathematical statistics (Microsoft Office Excel 2010). The scientific novelty lies in the justification of the didactic functions of provision for atypical students, establishing theoretical basis for the model of designing didactic support based on the principle of personalized learning as a gradual transfer of a student to the position of self-learner. The practical significance of the study results presented in the article lies in the development of a model for the design of didactic support for atypical students, the allocation of a step-by-step algorithm for this process, the development of elective courses and modular disciplines, in the creation of a training manual “Teacher's readiness to develop Individual Educational Plan for schoolchildren”. • Promoting national identity: the case of language university students in
           Russia

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 862-877
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0862
Authors : Uliana Smirnova : The contemporary context for facilitating cultural identification in Russian higher education is problematic with the main challenges for an educator encompassing the understanding of contemporary Russian identity and the methodological content and guidelines to promote it. The study investigates the national identity of Russian university students that they reveal in the course of studies at the Institute of Foreign Languages Moscow City University while doing adapted activities in a foreign coursebook. I argue that while students predominantly identify themselves as Russian their national identity reveals the complexity of intercultural and transcultural elements. The article proposes the understanding and knowledge students could be expected to learn in the process of promoting national identity (an understanding of what national identity and national identification mean and how the complexity of today's globalized world influence them; an understanding of what constitutes their "Russianness" and what could be elements of other cultures; an understanding of the role that the Russian language and culture play in their multilanguage identity; an understanding that they can be unconscious of how deeply they are influenced by home culture and that there might be contradictions between what they say and how they behave) and gives examples of activities in a foreign textbook adapted to promote Russian identification from the intercultural and transcultural approaches perspective. The research indicates that at the moment students do not feel that English class is the space where they can reveal their Russian identity. HTML PDF

  • The problem of community in new types of social philosophy textbooks

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 847-861
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0847
Authors : Alexey Smirnov, Evgeny Prokhorov : Modern teaching practice imposes special requirements on textbooks. The text should be concise, but at the same time extremely comprehensive - similar to the way encyclopedia texts were compiled in the "classical era". The authors show that such requirements are met by a modern philosophical problem of community, which may prove constructive for preparation of social philosophy textbooks. The aim of the article is to demonstrate the didactic and theoretical possibilities of the concept and problems of community in a textbook. A heterological approach is used to explore different concepts of community. A central feature of all concepts of community is the representation of the social without reliance on some central authority or transcendental denotation. Community in this logic is thought of not as a given, not as an idea or a representation, but as a state or a mode of existence. Community is being together. But 'being together' does not mean being as a common property. Being is only in sharing, only through which community is established. The material presented in a social philosophy textbook should meet the following criteria: 1. The notion of community captures a snapshot of sociality that opposes imitative, dogmatic, totalitarian and authoritarian cognitive models. 2. The practice of using the notion 'community' is closely linked to a number of key concepts in contemporary social philosophy, such as singularity, event, other, sociation, sharing, multiplicity, difference. 3. The use of material that in one way or another engages the notion of community allows us to better understand the paradigmatic methodological shift in contemporary social science from being as a supersubstantial ground to being as becoming. 4. Finally, the issue of a community in relation to social philosophy as a field of knowledge is universal and, to varying degrees of detail, can be used in almost all the topics of any relevant course. • Interpreting textbook as a Global Polycode Text in Primary Comprehensive
           School

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 834-846
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0834
Authors : Julia Shulekina : The article regards the issue of a school textbook considered as a book for the new types of reading comprehension and interpretation against the modern digital environment. The issue proves relevant due to textbook impacting the educational process as well its compliance with the updated literacy standards. The latter claim textbook to have a nonlinear structure, to present the data in a multimodal way as well to be quite informative. It appears promising to consider textbook as a global polycode text, thus, there are two reasons for that. Firstly, textbook structure comes in the form of a multi-level semiotic space, in which each of the elements is rich in information, and, therefore, significant. Secondly, textbook interpretation urges some specific activity beyond the scope of operating with a language sign which involves data search, selection, comparison and comprehension. Textbook interpretation is mostly nonlinear which implies different strategies and modes of information processing. It is an integral skill in the framework of educational activities and requires students’ psychophysical readiness. The study revealed textbook interpretation hardly comes close to traditional text reading. It is efficient in different grades of primary schools due to mastering skills of operating and decoding links formed while signs and symbols are interrelated. The skills considered are formed non-linearly, and their state reflects the readiness of students of a particular class to carry out sign-symbolic activities, guided by the goals and objectives of educational activities. The author emphasizes a gap in academic sources tackling this issue, which contributes to theoretical and practical relevance of the study. HTML PDF

  • Bilingual Textbook as Driver of Knowledge Transfer in Modern Educational
           Environment

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 820-833
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0820
Authors : Tatyana Shiryaeva, Olga Litvishko, Milana Mosesova : Realities of modern education actualize the need to change the approach to developing textbooks for higher education. Bilingual textbooks are becoming more highly-demanded as they provide for achieving a dual purpose – teaching both a foreign language and a professional discipline. Despite the spread of CLIL approach in elementary and secondary levels, it has not been introduced in higher education as widely as traditional teaching methods. It is mostly employed in Master’s programmes, whereas bachelor-level programmes are completely uninvolved in this regard. Scarcity of appropriate teaching materials alongside with the lack of reliable materials in the Russian language accounts for the limited scope of CLIL implementation in our country. The textbook developed by the authors is an attempt to introduce CLIL techniques into the curriculum of the second year of study in the Legal Department of Pyatigorsk State University in teaching a professional discipline – Financial Law by means of a foreign language, namely English. The textbook is innovative in its nature as it promotes meta-knowledge, problem solving and critical thinking, collaboration and communication thus serving as the driver of knowledge transfer in modern Russian educational environment.            religious education

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 812-819
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0812
Authors : Tatyana Shaposhnikova, Tatyana Kostyukova, Ravilya Zianshina, Tatyana Gorbacheva : The matter of the relationship between the secular and the religious is relevant today because of polyconfessionality of Russian society, the increasing role of religion, the humanistic nature of education, and the right of individuals to gain knowledge of the world from different perspectives. The purpose of the article is to consider issues of management of this relationship by the state. This research is interdisciplinary, with the sociocultural approach as the dominant one. To study and describe possible ways and forms of cooperation between faith-based organizations and government, education authorities, we used methods of study, analysis and interpretation of sources, with a key role played by regulatory documents and statutory decisions concerning development and introduction of new theology subjects and disciplines, textbooks, and methodical literature at all levels — schools, colleges, and universities. Research results allow proving that practical importance of introducing new subjects, textbooks and courses with theological content significantly increased with effective management of relationship between the secular and the religious in education. Religious education in modern society becomes an integral part of education helping develop a high level of culture and improve spiritual growth. Religious culture has high educational potential. • The concept of the textbook modernization in the era of information
technologies: physical education and challenges of modernity

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 795-811
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0795
Authors : Viktoriya Shalabodina : This paper presents the search for solutions for the modernization of textbooks on physical culture. Technological progress is gaining momentum every day, making yesterday's advanced solutions obsolete today. Such challenges require a number of measures on updating the manuals and the entire teaching process. In the paper, we analyzed the available textbooks for high school students: as a result, we discovered the problem of the course content itself, which could not meet the needs of the modern information society or fulfill the tasks that were set in the Federal Law for physical culture. Thanks to this study, we were able to identify the students’ key needs in knowledge related to physical education, as well as to understand what format of material presentation is currently the most effective. We considered a completely different approach not only to the learning process itself, but also proposed a conceptually new model of a training manual on the subject, which, in our opinion, cannot consist of just a textbook today. The text format is necessary, but only as a kind of base for a course, while the main tools should correspond to the level of technological progress. That is, a modern textbook should be a set of certain tools that contribute to better mastering the material, and this can be achieved only by taking into account the current trends in information dissemination. This paper is devoted to the definition and implementation of these tools in the educational process. HTML PDF

           Institute of Railway Transport

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 780-794
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0780
Authors : Larissa Sereda : Humanization and humanitarianism of education has always been and should remain the fundamental principles of educational activity of University and pedagogical activity of a teacher. This statement is especially relevant in the era of ubiquitous digitalization, which has penetrated in different spheres of life and life of any individual. Today it is humanitarianism that is recognized as a counteracting power to digitalization, which, at the same time, cannot be perceived as something hostile to society and people. Only humanitarianism, with its humanitarian nature and meaning of everything that happens, can protect society from social catastrophe and even greater immersion in material values. This paper postulates the need to apply the principle of humanitarianism in the development of a foreign language textbook for technical Universities, which allows the textbook to provide potential for personal development. The personal development potential of a foreign language textbook is aimed at developing the general culture of students, which is understood as the social, intellectual, spiritual development of an individual. The article examines current trends in understanding the essence of the principle of humanitarianism and its implementation in educational institutions of the country, studies the requirements for the design of a foreign language textbook. The purpose of the article is to analyze the personal development potential of a German language textbook written for students of the University of Railway Transport and to formulate recommendations for the development of foreign language textbooks for technical Universities on the principles of humanitarianism. The main approach in the study is the empirical method, which helps to prove that a foreign language textbook, developed on the principles of humanitarianism, contains personal development potential, and, in particular, can contribute to the development of the general culture of students. The practical significance of the research is the formulation of requirements for foreign language textbooks for technical Universities based on the application of the principle of humanitarianism. • Risks of Modern Digital Environment Hindering the Implementation of
           Upbringing Programs

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 766-779
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0766
Authors : Nataliya Selivanova, Pavel Stepanov, Vladimir Kruglov, Irina Parfyonova : Being one of the most rapidly developing phenomena of modern civilization, informatization and digitalization become the realities of the modern school, through the active penetration of information technologies into the everyday education practice. We can view school changes as a natural phenomenon associated with the formation of new cultural instruments, as a process of changing the content, methods and organizational forms of educational work. Digitalization could not but touch upon one of the main means of learning - a textbook. Increasingly, students are switching to electronic versions of textbooks. Training programs are accompanied by interactive support. This is only the beginning of the process, since digitalization requires new concepts, new learning models and new textbooks. Informatization of education is closely related not only to changes in the educational environment. Almost all links of the modern pedagogical process are being transformed. This process also affects school upbringing. Nowadays the organization of upbringing process is largely determined by the upbringing program of each educational organization. Therefore, it is important to consider the risks that arise from immersion in this environment. The purpose of the article is to determine the risks of the modern socio-digital environment that hinder the process of implementing upbringing programs in educational institutions. Such theoretical research methods as analysis, generalization, comparison, interpretation, systematization were used to achieve the research goal. The results of the study will allow teachers to organize the upbringing process effectively, taking into account the presented risks and protect them from the negative effects of digital environment. DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0710
Authors : Elena Poltavets, Galina Romanova, Alfiya Smirnova : The paper is devoted to a relevant problem: how literature influences the students’ cultural self-identification in the process of its study. The purpose of this scientific work is to identify the criteria a modern literature textbook must meet, and to demonstrate the educational role literature plays in the cultural identity formation, illustrated with the example of books on literary theory and the Russian literature history of the 19th – 20th centuries. The most appropriate approach to the problem is the culturological one. Based on the statement that the personal involvement in society and culture within the literature studying course is a cultural identification, the authors put forward a number of recommendations aimed at updating the content in educational books related to the disclosure of their cultural context, inter-text, creative links, typological similarities, intermediate issues, media citations. The paper provides examples of textbooks that demonstrate the successful experience of combining a cultural approach with an immanent description of the writer's work, which is of practical value for creating new educational books on literature.            for Extensive Reading Textbooks

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 661-671
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0661
Authors : Marina Nikolaeva, Natalia Tomskaya : The paper offers insights into extensive reading issue in connection with a person-centered approach. The major objective of the study was to ascertain the significance of extensive reading not only for the improvement of language skills in learning English but also in the development of a learner’s worldview through reading and discussing authentic texts used as an education resource. Empirical data for the study were authentic texts and graded readers as well as workbooks and manuals as support materials. The methodological approach used in the data analysis is a mixed methodology based on comparison of techniques applied in extensive reading in graded readers and in Russian university educators’ workbooks and manuals. The research follows a two-side design worked out by the authors, with the analysis of techniques used in extensive reading and of content features of authentic texts. Drawing upon our findings of application of authentic texts for extensive reading, we propose three main recommendations for making an effective extensive reading textbook, which can contribute both to the improvement of language skills and to the appearance of mental and emotional response to the topics raised in authentic texts. This type of response we consider to be a sign of the developments of students’ personality while learning English. HTML PDF

Authors : Julia Mueller, Marina Omelchenko : In the field of professional education, the problem of creating innovative teaching aids and educational and methodological complexes is currently especially acute. The tasks and functions of teaching materials in a foreign language are fundamentally changing and becoming more complicated in connection with the changing requirements of the labour market for young specialists, the duration of study at universities and the increasing informatization and digitalization of processes. It is necessary to critically rethink the experience accumulated in the field of compiling textbooks and education-methodical complexes in foreign languages and optimize their content and structure, taking into account new requirements. The article undertakes a comparative analysis of the classic textbook and the education-methodical complex of the new generation in the German language. The manuals are analyzed from the point of view of the content, the authenticity of the proposed materials and the communicative component of the exercises and tasks. The genres of the texts used and the types of tasks for the extraction of information while reading are highlighted. The results of the analysis showed that the teaching materials of a new type include the most effective traditional types of exercises and tasks, at the same time, the compilers make an attempt to use language and speech exercises comprehensively, lexical and grammar material is worked out in interaction, and the system of exercises is aimed at the formation and improvement of communicative, sociocultural, strategic and pragmatic competencies. The structure of the teaching materials of a new type also includes a program of study in a multimedia class for the development of pronunciation skills using authentic samples of speech and listening skills with full or partial extraction of information from texts of different genres, selected taking into account the level of students and the subject matter of the main parts of the teaching materials. DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0640
Authors : Mariya Mizgulina, Grigory Misochko, Vladlena Fedianina : The relevance of this study lies in the need to create learning materials that meet the needs of modern society in the field of teaching foreign languages, and the Japanese language, in particular. The role of a Japanese language self-study book is especially growing in the context of distance learning as well as lifelong learning and supplementary education that have been in demand in recent years. This paper analyzes the conceptual foundations of a self-study book of the Japanese language and their implementation in the self-study book by M.N. Mizgulina “Japanese: The Best Self-Study Book" designed for beginner Japanese language learners. The analysis of the methodological literature on the problem of creating textbooks reveals the following: 1) the self-study book “Japanese: The Best Self-Study Book” was developed on the basis of modern methods and approaches, 2) it aims at achieving learning outcomes, and 3) it allows individualized learning to be fully implemented. The results of the analysis of conceptual foundations and their practical implementation in this self-study book at various levels (e.g., methodological, goal-setting, learning content, structure, communicative development, sociocultural development, language-specific features) demonstrate that “Japanese: The Best Self-Study Book” can be used as a model for creating self-study books for subsequent levels of Japanese language learning. • Modeling the World Picture within Education English Language Textbook
           Discourse

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 627-639
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0627
Authors : Svetlana Michugina, Oksana Lukoshus : This article aims at contributing to the discussion regarding the conceptual approach of modeling the world picture within education textbook discourse taking English language teaching as an example. The argument is that education discourse, where a textbook discourse is even more important, should be linked and possible to be referred to the modern present-to-day picture of the world. A speaker, in our case an English language learner, is to be viewed as a representative of both his/her individual and national construal of the globe. But for a few decades, total globalization in all social spheres including education has been transferring national into global issues with the point of urgent necessity to build universal nationless attitude towards facts from reality. In this respect, it comes across as being extremely essential to preserve all the national values and even to reconstruct those which may have been lost. Consequently, a textbook discourse should, first and above all, megaphone a learner’s national world picture in comparison to the one of others with existent diversity and specificity, where, nevertheless, the national world picture is to predominate. The paper analyses the student’s English language textbook content for different grades to examine the correlation of the English language world picture and the one of the Russian language. HTML PDF

      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0574
Authors : Irina Levchenko, Albina Sadykova, Aleksandr Grinshkun, Anastasia Pavlova : The introduction of pre-professional training in the IT field in Russian schools is determined by the development of the digital economy and the information technologies, the need to prepare schoolchildren for professional self-determination and to form relevant competencies for future IT specialists. However, there is evidence to suggest the lack of substantive support for in-depth training in the sphere of IT for introducing the pre-professional training in schoolchildren. Therefore, it becomes relevant to form the content of IT training at an in-depth level, which makes it possible to master new skills in this sphere. The article reveals the problem in determining approaches to forming the content of training programme for IT classes, discloses the possibilities of a fundamental approach to designing the content of a textbook for IT classes. The analysis of the theoretical sources on pre-professional training in the IT sphere as well as the experience of in-depth teaching informatics to schoolchildren made it possible to define the fundamental approach as the basis for designing the plan of the in-depth IT training of schoolchildren. The results of the study can be the basis for designing the content of fundamental informatics training, which is an invariant component of the pre-professional training of schoolchildren in the sphere of information technologies. The results obtained will make it possible to design a textbook for IT classes. HTML PDF

Authors : Sergey Letun, Lyudmila Voronina : Publishers of textbooks has faced new challenges as a natural consequence of rapid changes in the digital age. Nevertheless, the understanding of a "textbook" by a teacher of a foreign language and a publisher still differs. There is necessity to integrate course series with web applications suggesting adjustments to the usual way of working for publishers. The article deals with creation of the shape of the XXI century foreign language textbook and determination of its characteristics distinguishing an innovative textbook from its traditional model to list services that publishers should be ready to provide to teachers-developers of the technologies in teaching foreign languages in order to jointly create an innovative e-textbook that meets modern reality and trends. The analytical study showed how the concept of e-textbook changed in a chronological order in comparison with the concept of paper textbook. Interactivity, information polymodality and hypertext structure is considered fundamental difference between an e-textbook and its paper counterpart. The authors generalized the services that a modern publisher should be ready to render to teacher-developers and to universities, and formulated the conditions under which the teacher-developer’s readiness to implement digital technologies in making modern e-textbooks can be achieved. It was stated that technological learning platforms should be a kind of integration with publishing platforms at the same time, and the conclusion was made as to how XXI century textbook on a foreign language can be defined. Authors : Svetlana Kuklina, Alexandra Kirillovykh : The article from the standpoint of systemic, synergistic, competent, professionally oriented and communicative-cognitive approaches considers the textbook as a complex didactic-methodical support for the foreign language educational process in non-linguistic universities. This is justified by the high requirements for foreign language training in the situation with few hours for the students learning a foreign language, the lack of quality modern textbooks and uniformed requirements for their creation. The authors define the textbook as the complex didactic-methodical support for foreign language education, identify its main parameters and describe the content of textbook components. The conceptual-objective component represents the global education goal – the formation of professionally oriented foreign language communicative competence; the subject-procedural - the social experience combining the cognitive, reproductive, creative and emotional-value relationships for students to acquire; the instrumental component with a modified polymodal exercise as its elementary unit, which is capable for being incorporated into any educational technology; and the controlling-evaluating component, combining the evaluation criteria and the evaluation funds for the instructor and the self-monitoring and self-evaluating tools for students. • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 517-530
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0517
Authors : Tatiana Kondratova, Nadezhda Saltanova, Anastasiya Popova : The article presents a concept of creating a textbook on literature for undergraduate Russian-Chinese languages major students, and therefore taking courses of Russian and Chinese literature. The relevance of the present research lies in the necessity to develop the strategy of moral education of the students undergoing professional training. The authors have used the activity-and-competence-building approach; they propose that the textbook should be regarded as a laboratory of creating a person’s morality. According to the authors, a full-fledged moral person is an individual who strives for obtaining high moral qualities and who realizes the inconsistency with the ideal. The article demonstrates the samples of educational materials and tasks that will help the reader to come to certain moral conclusions and get a lesson in humanism, team spirit, patriotism, tolerance, etc. The authors show the use of comparative analysis, which creates an idea not only of the proximity of various elements of content and form in Russian and Chinese literature, but also of the similarity of moral criteria in assessing the personal values of two nations. Examples of texts taken from literatures of different countries and various time periods, possessing a certain typological similarity in the range of topics brought up by the writers, – these examples convince us that although ethical criteria, in contrast to moral laws, although they are based on them, but they possess an overtemporal nature, they are eternal, universal. Authors : Andrey Kolesnikov, Irina Bogovskaya, Yulia Krasovitskaya, Nataly Spichko : The article discusses the problem of modernizing a new generation foreign language electronic textbook as well as an electronic platform that organizes the entire educational process. The urgency of the problem lies in the fact that the need for an urgent transition to distance learning arisen all over the world has highlighted the shortcomings of the current Russian alternative electronic school education system. The purpose of the article is to identify its shortcomings and suggest ways to eliminate them. The main method is the examination of the Russian electronic educational system in the field of disciplines - German and English as foreign languages. The work of the authors of the article as experts of the educational platform "Moscow Electronic School" (MES) made it possible to combine the valuable information presented here about current electronic textbooks and collect observations about the content and technical components of the proposed scenarios of electronic lessons. The analysis concludes that MES is currently the most developed and demanded tool of the Russian electronic educational system. First of all, these include the creation of a unified interactive educational media space and the organization of synchronized work of the teacher and students in three formats: full-time, remote, full-time-distance. This implies the smooth interaction of three digital spaces: the screens of the teacher, the student, and the interactive whiteboard. The practical significance of the research results is based on identifying the main ways to merge the electronic textbook and the electronic platform that supports its operation. HTML PDF

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 485-501
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0485
Authors : Maria Kochagina : Digitalization of education affects components of the system of teaching mathematics and the links between its individual components (aims, content, methods, forms and means of teaching). Modern students perceive and process information differently and actively use different available sources of information. A math textbook is a traditional teaching tool, and not the only one, it is also an important source of information for students. High requirements are imposed on the textbook as it should serve as a model for presenting educational material and creating conditions for students’ autonomy. Students’ reading proficiency is also influenced by appropriate content of a textbook and the use of effective instructional techniques. There is an academic interest to study the role and place of math textbooks in the context of digitalization of education. Our research is concerned with the ways of using a textbook in teaching mathematics at school. The article illustrates the results of the 2020 survey of student teachers of mathematics about their experiences with using mathematics textbooks during their school years. The analysis of the survey answers allowed us to identify the demand for math textbooks by modern school students, deficits and problems in methodology of teaching mathematics. The results of the research will allow us to find answers to the questions "What should a math textbook for modern pupils be like'" and "What techniques of work with a math textbook should pupils know'". The results of the research will be taken into account in the creation of methodological recommendations for math teachers to improve effectiveness of teaching math. HTML PDF

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 457-467
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0457
Authors : Nataliya Khodyakova, Dmitry Khodyakov : Due to changing pedagogical points of view about the aim and the content of education points of view about the target and functions of a modern textbook as a means of teaching are being transformed as well. For overall personality development students need textbooks which don’t only transfer educational information of some volume and complexity but also represent full-sided conditions of a personality’s interaction with a textbook as educational environment which is defined as a situation by the authors. According to the prevailing kind of students’ orientation 4 qualitatively different types of such situations are defined: cognitive orientation, object and activity orientation, axiological orientation, integral orientation. Each of these types is placed in correspondence with 3 groups of personality developing environmental conditions (content sources, stimuli and opportunities for personality growth). This situational and environmental model given is placed on the basis of projecting a modern textbook and defines the criteria of evaluating its personality developing potential. HTML PDF

  • Linguistic Analysis of Contemporary Italian Language Textbook

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 432-445
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0432
Authors : Daria Karpenko, Oxana Dubnyakova : Problems of foreign language textbook writing have drawn considerable attention of scholars in Russia and other countries. The textbook is an important element of the process of teaching a foreign language, being a basic teaching tool, created on the basis of the fusion of methodological and linguistic knowledge. Linguistic research determines the general principles of teaching a native language or teaching a particular foreign language, defining the general features of this language that also affect its assimilation. Through linguistic analysis and research in applied linguistics, the main principles of compiling textbooks on a foreign language are highlighted. Considering education as a sociocultural phenomenon on the one hand and as a psychological process on the other, we also note the importance of taking into account psycholinguistic (selection of materials taking into account the peculiarities of memory and mentality), pedagogical and didactic (correlating the studied material with other disciplines), methodological (selection of teaching methods) , as well as sociolinguistic and sociocultural data in the preparation of a modern textbook on foreign languages. This article examines the analysis of modern textbooks on the Italian language from the point of view of linguistic science. The study presents and analyzes the phenomena of metalinguistic reflection and linguistic input, using the example of educational tasks from the most popular textbooks of the Italian language in Russia for adult students. The study examined the classification of linguistic criteria for the selection of educational texts in accordance with the norms of the modern Italian language, as well as the communication strategies and tactics used by their authors. The prerequisites for further research in the field of written educational discourse are highlighted. HTML PDF

  • Language Androcentrism in British Textbooks in the 80s of the XXth century

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 424-431
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0424
Authors : Ekaterina Ilina, Tatyana Polyakova : The problem of gender and gender studies permeate all areas of human life, becoming more and more relevant every day. Gender correctness is becoming an integral part of the narrative, making new demands on communication. Language is a tool for constructing, reproduction and recreation of a gender worldview. At the moment, the gender picture of the world is undergoing drastic changes, revision and reflection. In this regard, it is important to look at the history of language androcentrism in order to avoid it in modern communication. In this article, based on the material of British educational texts of the early 80s of the XX century, the linguistic methods of constructing gender are analyzed. Based on the A. Pauwel’s methodology the signs of androcentrism are revealed. The signs of anrocentrism include the following: derivatives of women's status from the male, the women’s invisibility in language, and stereotypical image of both sexes. The study found that all the above-mentioned signs of gender asymmetry are fully reflected in authentic British educational texts. The patriarchal picture of the world is formed by means of the English language. HTML PDF

  • Textbooks on Foreign Literature as a Means of Students’
           Linguocultural Competence Building

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 396-411
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0396
Authors : Anna Guliyants, Svetlana Guliyants, Anna Ivanova : The article dwells on the concept of linguocultural competence and methods of fostering it through teaching foreign literature in higher educational institutions. Considering “competence” to be an individual’s ability to gain knowledge, skills and experience enabling them to act effectively in a professional situation, the authors state that a translator/interpreter’s key competence seems to lie at the intersection of linguistics and culture. The aim is to shed light on linguocultural competence as cultural knowledge embodied in a particular language, on cultural semantics and the ability to apply appropriate lexical and stylistic items in situations of multilingual communication. To do so, a translator/interpreter will require a good understanding of common norms, rules and traditions within a language community; sufficient linguistic and culture-bound knowledge updated on a lifelong basis; ability, skills and motivation to ponder over values and attitudes applicable to a given culture. The problem of developing a would-be translators/interpreters’ linguocultural competence is of high relevance as it has not been studied in detail yet and previous research can only be seen as first steps towards designing viable methods. The authors reflect on their practical experience of creating textbooks on English literature and using them in class to ensure linguocultural competence development. The outcome of the research is the proposed structure for a foreign literature textbook that includes various types of linguistic and literary analysis – componential, stylistic, intertextual, and others. The results obtained might be beneficial for practicing university teachers as well as students engaged in independent linguocultural competence building. HTML PDF

  • On Selecting FL Educational Text

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 386-395
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0386
Authors : Elena Grigoryeva, Valeriy Uvarov, Lyudmila Ryzhova : The article attempts to analyze the texts of modern foreign language textbooks and workbooks for their relevance, to interpret the results of the study of the students’ and teachers’ opinions on this issue and, based on the data obtained, to offer methodologically and didactically justified approaches to the choice of a foreign language educational text for students of a non-linguistic university. The list of criteria presented according to the results of the study does not rank them according to the degree of importance, since all of them equally contribute to the formation of students’ high-quality foreign language communicative competence. Finally, the authors draw a conclusion about the important role of methodologically and didactically justified choice of educational text material as a basis for learning a foreign language. The authors also express the hope that taking into account the proposed selection criteria will contribute to the growth of interest in learning foreign languages. HTML PDF

  • The problem of developing textbook requirements for primary inclusive
           education

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 360-374
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0360
Authors : Olga Gribova, Julia Shulekina : This article discusses problems with the functioning of textbooks in modern inclusive education. A textbook is understood as a learning tool, the most important component of learning of a modern schoolchild. Irrespective of the type of educational organization and the form of education, the textbook should solve educational tasks connected with knowledge acquisition and the formation of basic educational competencies. Nowadays, the question of the requirement for textbooks to be accessible to different categories of students is raised. It is emphasised that the development of the 'right' textbook is one of the factors that determines the success and effectiveness of students throughout the learning process. The authors relate textbook requirements for inclusive education with the basic learning process, which is text comprehension. Based on the description of the specifics of students with speech impairment, we have modeled ways to optimize an existing Russian language textbook and adapt it to the comprehension abilities of this category of students. The research is presented as a review of fundamental resources that address various aspects of the development of textbook requirements. It is based on a psychological and pedagogical approach, which focuses on the special educational needs of students with disabilities as a reference point for modernization of existing textbooks, because the textbooks which were developed for normally developing students are ineffective in teaching children with disabilities. The article presents the difficulties which students with speech impairments may encounter at the initial stages of work with a textbook and proposes ways of solving potential problems. The results of the study are practically significant for updating the methodological support of primary education in the Russian Federation. HTML PDF

  • City as a Textbook: Building Urban Educational Environment

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 350-359
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0350
Authors : Victoria Goncharova : The idea to regard the city as a textbook rests on the belief that present-day educational tools get utmostly interactive and immersive so as to soon expand the boundaries of simple textbooks and embrace the complex educational environment. The article substantiates the thesis about the possibility to consider the city as a textbook from the standpoint of building the experience of national and cultural self-determination for a learner in the innovative context of educational urbanistics. As a key point, the author highlights the rationale that it is regional culture which is the only one available to the student to abide and understand by their national native culture. At the same time, the city (for example, the city of Moscow) is grounded as a resource space for such self-determination, being: a) a place to design social environment and communicative relations, b) a center of the regional level of native culture, c) a place to take an active part in real life situations, which involve both intercultural and communicative contexts. The author defines the related educational urbanistics as interdisciplinary field of designing socio-humanitarian knowledge and experience in the context of mutually enriching integration of urban space and value-specific (educational) trajectories of personal development of the citizen. As a result, the basic principles of building an urban educational environment in the context of national and cultural self-determination of students are formulated. HTML PDF

           Teachers

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 339-349
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0339
Authors : Irina Golovchanskaya, Svetlana Dudushkina, Natalia Mukhina : Higher education is constantly in search of ways to respond to the requirements of modern society for preparing a qualified specialist. Competence-based approach marked the transition from a theorized to a practical content of teacher training at university, aiming to educate a specialist who possesses the necessary strategies to perform well at a workplace. Pedagogical education strives to meet the necessary requirements, develops new programs, makes changes in the educational process, controls the learning outcomes of students. The undergraduate stage is designed to train a future teacher who both knows the subject itself and the theory of teaching a foreign language. There has recently been a tendency to use an integrated approach that combines subject and didactic components. Students who enroll in the French language program usually have not studied it before, which inadvertently creates a certain overbalance of language learning, especially since methodological disciplines are introduced into the program only in the third year. There is an urgent need to strengthen their methodological training, starting from the first year of study. Such an approach can be accommodated through designing a special educational product and incorporating it into the main foreign language textbook through didactic comments on the studied language material which will contribute to the development of methodological competence. The basis of methodological awareness, formed during the initial stage of studying at university, will significantly contribute to the effectiveness of pedagogical practice and future teaching strategies. DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0298
Authors : Elena Frolikova, Tatyana Simonyan : Search for optimization and improvement of the quality of higher education has encouraged scholars to turn to self-reflection as a practice aimed at self-development and self-analysis. Further assimilation of self-reflection into the educational process prompted teachers to introduce reflective practices into classes of English as a second language, which allowed to both improve students’ speaking skills and their awareness of reflection. Thus, the methodology of reflection-based teaching of speaking skills was devised and implemented. The next step was to assess the extent to which the above-mentioned methodology prompted self-reflection development. To realize this goal it was necessary to undertake experimental learning and analyze its results from the standpoint of a complex of quantitative and qualitative research methods. In the article this complex is described in detail with a particular emphasis on the method of case study as the central qualitative research method. Moreover, the shift in the students’ ability to reflect on their speech is described. HTML PDF

  • Special Features of Digital RFL Textbooks

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 264-278
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0264
Authors : Galina Dugina : The task of selecting the appropriate digital textbook for developing verbal skills in Russian as a foreign language has recently become more vital. During the general on-line studying foreign students learning Russian expressed their concern about the fact that there was less possibility for them to speak Russian in on-line class. Those complaints were further confirmed by the results of a survey among students conducted in April 2020. There appeared an issue of choosing an appropriate digital textbook or course of study to help students in mastering monologue and dialogue skills, to boost their motivation to speak Russian (both spontaneously and purposefully) under the teacher’s guidance or without it. Basic research methods included making a systematic review of on-line resources which can meet foreign students’ educational demands, analyzing the sources; determining the criteria for selecting the appropriate electronic publications and courses. The following key words were used for the search: “Russian as a foreign language” or “RFL textbook”. The criteria for selecting digital textbooks included their consistency with the key words, themes, and the level of study; a full-text format, availability of assignments aimed at developing monologue and dialogue skills in the Russian language. The use of the abovementioned methods helped to make a list of electronic textbooks and on-line courses, to specify their peculiar features and to analyze their exercises aimed at developing speaking skills. The review of the sources given in the article as well as the analysis of their technical and educational resources will hopefully help teachers giving Russian language on-line classes to select the most appropriate variant of a textbook (or assignments in it) which will effectively accomplish the task of developing speaking skills. • Open data in open education: epistemological and didactic aspects

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 254-263
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0254
Authors : Andrey Deryabin, Aleksandr Popov : The paper suggests a critical view on various formats of didactic materials - from classical and electronic textbooks to digital educational courses. The educational value of a digital educational program is mostly determined not by its media saturation or the abundance of applied online materials, but by an elaborated didactic concept, which development can be a complicated epistemological task. Using the example of the authors’ educational program in Data Science and Machine Learning for secondary school (900 participants) employing social-economic datasets, it is showed how epistemologically complex problem-solving curriculum can be implemented. A possibility to change how working with data and information are handled so that students can reconstruct a school subject, including a design of a customizable digital resources that may replace classic textbooks is discussed. • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 228-240
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0228
Authors : Elena Cherkashina : The article deals with the recent problem of teaching a foreign language to specialists in the sphere of service and production. The demand for personnel with a professional linguistic competence has remained high on the labor market over the past decade. The teaching community is actively developing new training courses and programs in the foreign language of the specialty, an important component of which is mastering the language of the professional sphere. However, the question of creating textbooks for narrow-focused specialists (air traffic controllers, pilots, navigators, medical personnel, tourism workers) remains open, for such specialists a foreign language is a tool that allows them to carry out their professional activities. The article clarifies the content of the terms "language of specialty" and "language for specific purposes", which is reflected in the organization of courses in the language of specialty and technology of courses in language for specific purposes. The results of the experimental training have showed the effectiveness of the program "French in the field of tourism" and revealed the need to write a textbook. The author's proposed model of the textbook "French in the field of tourism" is intended for students of language universities, faculties of tourism, staff of hotels and travel agencies and includes the following components: modularity of the course, special vocabulary, a list of professional skills and communicative situations of business communication, methodological techniques that allow to form readiness for professional activity. • Foreign Language Teachers as Agents of Using a Coursebook

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 198-215
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0198
Authors : Elena Borzova, Maria Shemanaeva : The article highlights the concept of foreign language teacher agency which can manifest itself in the teachers` decision to introduce changes to the coursebooks they use. The most significant characteristics of the teacher agentic position in this area are clear motives and goals for change, a detailed analysis of the context and of the tools (including coursebooks) that are necessary for positive learner outcomes, an autonomous decision to choose and use the teaching materials that can facilitate effective learning. All these require teacher self-regulation and reflection. The article aims to find out if foreign language teachers are inclined to change coursebooks and why some teachers reject any changes, what factors affect their decision, and what kind of changes are common. The present research is based on the teachers` answers to a questionnaire that was offered to 182 foreign language school teachers from 2015 up to the beginning of 2020. All the respondents were divided into two groups: professionally active teachers in the community (32 teachers) and those who do not actively participate in the regional professional activities (150 teachers). The results of the study prove that the teacher`s readiness and ability to introduce coursebook changes are a significant indicator of the overall teacher agency. Though the study has a few limitations, its outcomes can be beneficial for both pre-service and in-service teacher education in terms of coursebook evaluation and material choice/development skills. • Textbooks on theoretical disciplines for "generation z" students

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 185-197
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0185
Authors : Elena Borisova, Sofia Furmanova : The paper deals with the actual problem of textbooks and teaching aids’ creation while taking into account the social, psychophysical and psycholinguistic features of modern students of language specialties, who, along with practical language courses, receive theoretical training. A new generation of students, often called the generation of "zoomers", as well as the introduction of the online learning based on the educational platforms Zoom and Teams, revealed the urgent need to modernize the learning process, introduce new forms of work, as well as to create textbooks and teaching aids of a new type. The work draws attention to the trainees’ characteristics, which distinguish the current generation from their predecessors, for example, pragmatism, multi-activity, self-confidence, digitalization, and a number of others. Based on the experience of teaching and analyzing the research of Russian linguists, linguo-didacts, and textbook authors, the paper suggests the possibility of creating textbooks and manuals that overcome the students’ shortcomings and use their typical traits to improve the quality of education. The result of the study was the development of criteria for the formation of a textbook on theoretical disciplines. These criteria describe both approaches to the material organization in the textbook and the revision of the educational process organization, in particular, the refusal from the standard model of "teacher-student", which allows the student to become a "co-creator" of a practical or a theoretical lesson. A new type of textbook becomes a multi-modal complex that takes into account not only the modern students’ specifics, but also has technical characteristics that meet the ideas of the latest technologies. The practical significance of the study results is the possibility of creating a pilot project of a textbook on theoretical disciplines for undergraduate students, structured in accordance with the criteria described in this research paper. • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 169-184
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0169
Authors : Sergey Borgoyakov, Klara Burnakova, Tatyana Borgoyakova : One of the important conditions for the consolidation of Russian society is to ensure harmonious interaction of ethnocultural and All-Russian identity. In this regard, the relevance of the research is determined by the need to develop methodological foundations for the organizing of ethno-linguistic education as a factor in the formation of ethnocultural identity in the context of the tasks of the state’s national policy. The aim of this work is to determine the methodological foundations of ethno-linguistic education as a pedagogical means of forming an ethnocultural identity in conjunction with the All-Russian identity. Method. An integrated approach is used for understanding ethnocultural identity and its formation in ethno-linguistic education. It is analyzed from the standpoint of personal-competence and culturological approaches. Results. It is revealed that different models of teaching ethnic languages are implemented in the system of ethnocultural education: a model provided for teaching an ethnic language as a mother tongue to schoolchildren who can speak the language, and a model, the purpose of which is to teach schoolchildren who have poor or absence knowledge of the mother tongue, through the implementation of educational programs on the ethnic language as a state language. The practical significance of the research lies in the fact that taking into account certain theoretical and methodological foundations will increase the effectiveness of the development of ethnocultural identity in the context of the strategic tasks of the national educational policy of the state. • Terminological Variability in the Category of Educational Publications

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 154-168
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0154
Authors : Liudmila Borbotko, Ekaterina Vishnevskaya : Nowadays is witnessing new challenges related to the current state of the digital era. The phenomenon of digital consciousness that is the result of digitalization calls for the new objectives and instruments in all spheres of human activity. The latter especially concerns education. Nevertheless, new technological perspectives rely on the expertise that comes in the form of verified and approved teaching and learning tools that are books coming in a variety of types. Variability in terms of naming those manuals is linguistically due to the common processes in terminology as well as methodologically explained by the differences in the set of objectives and goals to hit with the help of this or that manual. Moreover, the diversity of manual types which implies variability of terms used to name them is regulated by such principal factors as official recognition and compliance with the curriculum. Still, various manuals that are characterized by different titles, functional and teaching potential have a structure that is strictly determined and obligatory. HTML PDF

  • Textbooks’ Role in Secondary Education in Georgia, the Postmodern
           Era

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 141-153
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0141
Authors : Tatyana Bokova, Oksana Markova : The paper presents a study of the role textbooks play in secondary education in Georgia in the postmodern era. A textbook theory which was formed by the middle of the 20th century, its main provisions, served the basis for the study of various representations of school textbooks’ functions: informational, transformational, systematizing, motivational, the function of students’ orientation towards cognitive activity, the function of developing students' cognitive abilities based on their mastering the skills of cognitive activity and gradually increasing the level of their cognitive independence, integrating, coordinating, developing and educational. An attempt has been made to study the influence of postmodernistic ideas on the development of school education in Georgia, its educational and methodological support, the central component of which is a textbook. The authors reveal a shift in the goal of education under the influence of postmodern thinking from teaching academic knowledge and skills to providing a learning environment where students create their own knowledge. They analyzed tutorial layouts for the 9th grades students of Georgian schools, posted on the official portal of the Center of Textbook Marking and justified the conclusion that the invariant function of the textbook, which includes a book for the student, a book for the teacher, a workbook and a disk with audio recordings, is the function of developing students’ independent work in the informational space, search, and encouraging students to independently construct knowledge. • HOW TO SHAPE PROFESSIONAL IDENTITY THROUGH NEXT-GENERATION TEXTBOOKS: FROM
           MULTILINGUALISM TO GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 73-86
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0073
Authors : Alexander Bagiyan, Tatyana Shiryaeva : The main purpose of the presented study is to theoretically justify the necessity of having a new-generation multilingual coursebook, as well as the procedure of making it up and using it as the main tool of shaping students’ professional identity in the sphere of higher education. For this reason, the paper investigates the theoretical underpinnings and possible practical outcomes of developing a coursebook (course package) that would shape students' multilingual professional identity along with their sense of global citizenship. Taking into account the complexity of the matter in question, the research focuses on each consecutive theoretical aspect (professional identity formation, multilingualism, global citizenship) and puts forward all the necessary evaluation features essential for further materials development. The results show that the development of a multilingual professional identity in the light of global citizenship requires the use of materials evaluation to set a scene for further materials production; the use of authentic materials to stimulate more cerebral functions and whole-brain processing; the use of conceptual linguistic engineering of professional identity as a holistic method of language materials segmentation and categorization; the use of methodological divergence of multilingual learning/teaching to help students form their professional identities through the enhancement of their cognitive, axiological, pragmatic and habitual functions; the use of proper materials adaptation to make them more appealing to potential students; simultaneous and balanced use of both electronic materials and ‘live’ coursebooks. The current research lays foundations for the following stage of actual development and design of a next-generation multilingual course package. HTML PDF

  • Teacher and Textbook in the Changing World

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 60-72
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0060
Authors : Aleksandra Artyukhina, Svetlana Tretyak, Vasily Velikanov, Nina Ivanova : The topicality of the research is substantiated by the transformations in higher education, leading to changes in professional activity of teachers, working in the conditions of constantly updating educational environment and the lack of modern textbooks satisfying the educational needs of students, postgraduate students and university teaching staff members. The purpose of the article is to reveal the criteria for development and the requirements for the textbooks intended for students of universities and for university instructors in the process of continuing professional education, as well as to propose new approaches to involving students in active use of textbooks. The leading approach to the analysis of the stated problem was the competence-activity approach. The tendency of changing students’ views on the “ideal” textbook at the under-and post-graduate level is revealed. A promising technique of students ' work with textbooks, additional to the traditional types of work, is described. The methodology of the organization of learners’ activities with a textbook in the unity of specific professional and humanitarian contexts, as well as the rationale for designing the content of a textbook at the levels of subject knowledge and experience mastering are presented. The examples of publications based on different approaches are given – an electronic textbook with a fundamental representation of educational technologies and a textbook developed on the basis of the idea of a class designer. The presented results can be used for theoretical analysis of the methodology of textbooks development and for the improvement of textbook compiling practices. HTML PDF

           Challenges

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 39-59
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0039
Authors : Nadezhda Almazova, Nina Popova, Alexandra I.Dashkina, Olga Zinovieva : The article deals with the conception of the new generation foreign language textbook reflecting contemporary challenges in the sphere of higher education. These are integration processes involving globalization and localization, interdisciplinary tendencies, interactive collaborative learning methods, digital technologies, visualization practices. Modern textbook is shown to have become a pedagogical platform that ensures the compatibility of methodological conditions for interconnected learning of receptive and productive types of speech activity: reading, listening, speaking and writing. Integrative approach in the textbook composition is illustrated by inclusion of Russian-English translation exercises and integrated assignments involving reading, watching a video and writing. Interdisciplinary principle is exemplified by the technical English manual combining scientific, technical, and intercultural components variation. Interactive learning methods are shown to trigger teamwork performed in the classroom or in independent mode with the use of digital technologies. It is indicated that numerous computer-assisted language learning tasks are becoming more widely used in modern textbooks, especially those aimed at the content visualization. Some of the visualizing elements, like word clouds, mental maps and info posters, are considered in detail accentuating their didactic values. HTML PDF

  • Blended Learning in Teaching Language for Occupational Purposes: Flexible
           E-textbook Design

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 24-38
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0024
Authors : Elena Alexeeva, Svetlana Buriakova : The article analyses the experience of developing an adaptive electronic textbook of French for occupational purposes for the MA programme "Linguistic support of project activities in the field of international cooperation". The authors substantiate the use of the genre-based approach, project-based learning, "flipped classroom" technique and gamification of learning in the design of educational scenarios which can be successfully implemented in the format of traditional, blended and distance learning. In addition, the developed content can be presented via a ready-made virtual educational environment, for example, Moodle, or using a system of disparate blended and distance learning tools. Taking into consideration that the lack of access to equipment and technologies is one of the major risk factors in distance learning introduced in connection with the Covid-19 pandemic, the authors provide a list of tools, depending on their pedagogical function, to be used for implementing designed learning scenarios in various educational contexts. The experience of designing an adaptive electronic textbook and literature review allowed to bring some clarifications in the definition of an e-textbook. It can be considered as a system of teaching content, exercises and tasks, educational scenarios, as well as descriptions of the pedagogical functions of the tools necessary for their implementation. The choice of specific tools that perform one or another pedagogical function should remain with the teacher, depending on concrete educational context. HTML PDF

  • A foreign language textbook as a tool for professionalizing a future
           linguist’s language training

    • Abstract: ARPHA Proceedings 4: 1-13
      DOI : 10.3897/ap.e4.e0001
Authors : Indira Abdulmyanova : The today need to professionalize the language training of specialists in various spheres of activity is obvious. However, when training future linguists (teachers, translators, intercultural communication specialists), this principle is manifested in a more in-depth study of language and speech phenomena. Yet, modern textbooks for linguists are seldom focused on the future profession. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the possibilities of thesaurus-style organization of educational material and its integration into the educational process, which could ensure the necessary level of professionalization of future linguists’ language training. A textbook for future teachers of a foreign language can serve a good example of that. The leading approaches to the study of the problem are integrated and empirical ones. The integrated approach allows us to take into account the context of professional training of specialists, based on interdisciplinary connections between language, linguistics, pedagogy and didactics. The empirical approach is justified by the fact that the recommendations formulated by the author of the paper rely on her practical experience in teaching a foreign language to various categories of linguists. The results of the study, presented as conclusions about the structure of a professionally oriented textbook for future linguists - foreign language teachers, its organization principles, the features of the selection and formulation of tasks, can be used in the creation of textbooks for future teachers of various foreign languages, as well as for specialists in other areas of professional activity.
