Abstract: In times of socio-environmental crisis, every agroecosystem on the planet plays a fundamental role in planetary stability. This is the case of dynamic agroforestry systems (DAS). These agroecosystems are born as a productive alternative to conventional agriculture. Although the institutions which are part of Shared Space in Agroforestry Systems network (ECO-SAF) have been installing and promoting DAS since 2008, it didn't have a study on their capacity to provide agroecosystem services to society and the planet. Thus, the present work estimated the agroecosystem services provided by the DAS of the ECO-SAF network in three case studies in the inter-Andean valleys of Cochabamba. The methodology used was the Agroecosystem Services Capacity Index (ICSA), which considers 23 agroecosystem services. It was determined that the DAS have a relevant to medium-high capacity to provide agroecosystem services since the agroecosystems with land cover that have DAS provided a greater diversity of services (between 18 to 22 services). The rating for the 23 agroecosystem services within the three case studies showed that the services with high ratings were nutrient regulation, occupational safety, pesticide-free food products and water purification (quality). Each case study also had its ICSA, resulting in a high average capacity for orchard N°1 and N°2 with an index of 2,3 and 2,9, respectively. While orchard N°3 had a relevant capacity with an index of 1,7. Additionally, a threshold (from 0 to 3) for the ICSA was generated. Finally, the potential of the ICSA methodology as a planning tool is evident, because it shows which agroecosystems provide the greatest agroecosystem services.

    • Abstract: Abstract: Agricultural soils located in peri-urban zones are at risk of contamination with potentially toxic elements due to their proximity to urban and industrial areas. The accumulation of these elements may affect ecosystem functioning and be hazardous for human health, consequently, evaluation of their concentrations is essential to determine accumulation patterns and to implement remediation measures if required. This study evaluated the concentrations of potentially toxic elements Mn, Zn, Pb, Cu and Cd in agricultural fields and irrigation canals of two peri-urban agricultural areas (Martillo and Tamborada) of Cochabamba, Bolivia. Soil and sediment samples were collected from agricultural fields and irrigation canals and their pH, electrical conductivity, organic matter, and the concentrations of Mn, Zn, Pb, Cu and Cd were determined. The results suggest accumulation of Zn, Cu and Mn in irrigation canals of both agricultural areas. Comparison of Tamborada and Martillo agricultural soils suggest Pb and Zn accumulation in Tamborada, while focal Cd accumulation was observed in Martillo. Element concentrations were within natural range variation of uncontaminated soils except for Zn in irrigation canals of Tamborada. The use of wastewater for irrigation, automobile-related diffuse pollution and the dumping of solid wastes in agricultural areas are potential contamination sources. While the alkaline, saline soils with loam and clay texture would contribute to reduce the bioavailability of potentially toxic elements, in the long-term, accumulation could lead to contamination and increase the risk of environmental and health hazard. The median concentrations for Mn, Zn, Pb and Cu (550.74, 75.95, 32.35 and 31.95 mg kg-1, respectively) are suggested as baselines values for the area.

Abstract: Due to the increase in greenhouse gas concentrations and the deterioration of green areas in the metropolitan region of Cochabamba, the San Pedro Mountain range represents an important green area within the urban landscape. Considering the deterioration of the mountain range (loss of vegetation cover), the objective of this study was to estimate the carbon fixation in the different vegetation covers of the San Pedro Mountain range, using biomass estimation methods to contribute to the management of this environmental function. The methodology used was the application of allometric equations in forest and shrub cover. The grasslands were extracted, dried and weighted in the laboratory. The cover with the highest carbon fixation per hectare was the open forest (35.34 tC ha-1) and the one with the lowest carbon fixation per hectare was the grassland (0.89 tC ha-1). It was observed that the area occupied by vegetation cover is important and decisive for the total carbon fixation value. Due to the positive relationship between conservation and carbon fixation, were proposed strategies for the maintenance and strengthening of carbon fixation capacity focused on vegetation restoration and control of anthropogenic pressures.

Abstract: After 2 years of confinement due to the pandemic caused by COVID-19, for the return to face-to-face classes, the Universidad Católica Boliviana San Pablo Sede Cochabamba developed a portable disinfection system using UV-C light that uses a PIR movement sensor, the which is connected to the ESP32 development board that controls two relay modules: a solid state one that turns the lamp on and off and another electromechanical one that controls an electric lock while the disinfection process is active. To have real-time monitoring, a bot is integrated into the Telegram application. The ESP32 board connects to the Internet through WiFi. There is a server configured in the cloud through the AWS provider. Within it, a Mosquitto server is implemented, which is the MQTT communication protocol broker to work with the Node-RED development tool and integrate a graphical interface capable of controlling the system remotely and from anywhere in the world. Tests were carried out in different environments of the university; The validation of the system and the disinfection was done through photosensitive papers that vary their hue according to the incidence of UV-C light they have and with the analysis of surfaces in a clinical laboratory. Both methods validated the functionality of the system.

Abstract: Chiquitanía is an ecoregion naturally adapted to fire, however, due to the increasing change in land use, wildfires are occurring with greater frequency and intensity. The objective of the research was to evaluate the impact of wildfires on the natural state of affected soils, proposing indexes for their evaluation. Physical and chemical parameters were measured in seven plots with different degrees of burn-traces in two types of representative ecosystems with the greatest extension in the region: "Semi-deciduous forest" and "Cerrado Chaparral". Subsequently, an index was designed that compared these values with reference data of soils from 40 years ago. The application of this index showed that: (1) Forests soils are closer to their natural state than those of Cerrado Chaparral, (2) the soil with the most recent burning was the most affected, (3) the most altered parameters in Cerrado Chaparral soils are available potassium and phosphorus, (4) for forest soils they are potassium and infiltration rate. These differences are possibly due to both the intrinsic characteristics of each ecosystem, as well as the differentiated land use in them; extensive cattle ranching with annual burning in Chaparrales and logging in forests.

Abstract: In Bolivia, the industry of processed amaranthaceae products is in an early stage of development, amaranthaceae are mainly marketed in the form of grains, most of the production goes for export and only between 5% and 10% is transforms it into a value-added product. For this reason, the interest arose in formulating a healthy and nutritious snack, for this purpose, 210 people between 18 and 65 years old, from Cercado Cochabamba, were surveyed, thus it was possible to determine the preference that the Cochabamba population has towards a healthy snack, which is why that hedonic tests were carried out to determine the formulation of a healthy snack from organic amaranths, honey and chocolate. These tests followed an experimental design with five samples which were distributed to twelve inexperienced jurors. Their responses were subjected to a statistical analysis, where the results were subjected to a two- factor analysis of variance with a confidence level of 95. %, with these results it was concluded that the snack is accepted with the attributes odor, color, flavor and texture, on the other hand, to discriminate between the means, the Tukey honestly significant difference procedure was used, with the statistical analysis it was concluded that the most widely accepted formulation is made up of 48% amaranthus, 38% chocolate, 9% cañahua and 5% honey. Finally, once the formulation was determined, the characterization of the finished product was carried out, showing a significant protein value.
