- First early archaeological dates in the Sierra of Nariño (Colombia):
Human settlements and activity of the Galeras volcano
Abstract: Resumen En este trabajo presentamos los resultados de las excavaciones arqueológicas adelantadas en el municipio de Consacá, vereda Bajo Bomboná, en el departamento de Nariño (Colombia), donde se evidenció la presencia de asentamientos humanos fechados por radiocarbono a partir del segundo milenio a.C. Este sitio temprano se caracteriza por la presencia de artefactos de obsidiana y la ausencia de cerámica asociada a ellos. El origen de esta obsidiana es la fuente natural de Mullumica, en Ecuador y, posiblemente, también de fuentes naturales de obsidiana del complejo volcánico de Sotará (Cauca/Huila). Su presencia en Nariño no se debe a un fenómeno geológico sino a su transporte por parte de personas hace cuatro milenios. En las excavaciones también se evidenció la contemporaneidad de la actividad del volcán Galeras y otros fenómenos geológicos caóticos con la presencia de poblaciones humanas asentadas en el curso medio del río Guáitara en los siglos X y XI d.C. La evidencia arqueológica sugiere que el territorio ha estado ocupado por poblaciones humanas durante cuatro mil años. Los análisis petrográficos realizados tanto en la cerámica, fechada mediante termoluminiscencia en época más tardía, como en los artefactos líticos distintos de la obsidiana sugieren que las materias primas que se usaron en su fabricación son de origen local.Abstract Here, we present the results of the archaeological excavations carried out in the municipality of Consacá, Bajo Bomboná, department of Nariño (Colombia), where we evidenced the presence of human settlements dated by radiocarbon to the second millennium BC. Obsidian artifacts with no associated pottery characterize this early site. The origin of the obsidian is the natural source of Mullumica, in Ecuador, and possibly also from natural obsidian sources of the Sotará Volcanic Complex (Cauca/Huila). The presence of this obsidian in Nariño is not due to a geological phenomenon but to its transportation by people four millennia ago. The excavations also showed the contemporaneity of the activity of the Galeras Volcano and other chaotic geological phenomena with the presence of human populations living in the area of the middle Guáitara River during the 10th and 11th centuries AD. Archaeological evidence suggests that human populations have occupied the territory for 4,000 years. Petrographic analyses carried out on both the pottery-dated by thermoluminescence to a later period-and on the lithic artifacts other than obsidian suggest that the raw materials used in their manufacture have a local origin.
