  • Modeling and Simulation of Predictive Control Systems for Power Generation
           in Smart Grids

Abstract: Smart Grids (SG) are recognized as a fundamental technological component to address the increase in energy demand, improving the reliability and sustainability of electricity systems. The present study includes in the SG storage elements that allow decreasing the power delivered by the main generation sources during peak demand hours. This ensures that the demand is always met while operating within the highest efficiency ranges. The use of the Matlab computational tool, through the YALMIP Toolbox, focused on modeling and solving optimization and control problems, is proposed to develop a Model Predictive Control (MPC) strategy that manages the energy resources of an SG and allows meeting the energy demand, and respects the controller constraints. The use of three generation sources is highlighted, two of which are considered to be the main ones, being wind and solar energy, and the third one is considered to be a storage system made up of batteries. The results indicate that by incorporating an MPC, we will be able to reduce generation costs, derived from maximizing the useful life of the elements and storing energy during the production period.

  • Geometallurgical Simulation for the Exploration of Gold and Silver Mineral
           Occurrences

Abstract: Resource exploration is an important stage to locate elements of economic interest, however, traditionally only pathfinder elements are evaluated without considering variables that impact the mining value chain. Therefore, the objective of this research consisted in elaborating the geometallurgical simulation for the exploration of Au and Ag mineral occurrences, integrating geo-structural, geochemical and geometallurgical attributes information of a prospective zone located in NW Ecuador. For this purpose, the Compositional Analysis was applied to geochemical data of 37 elements in 448 samples of fluvial sediments, forming two multi-elemental groups, the first one of Au - Ag pathfinders and the other of detrimental in leaching. A geostatistical analysis was elaborated by Gaussian Sequential Simulation, running 100 realizations for each group and choosing those that best reproduce the statistics and variograms; in addition, the probability of occurrence above the threshold value was evaluated. The anomalous results are consistent with data from nearby deposits indicating a grade of 57.45 g/t Au and recovery greater than 90 %. There are also zones with high probability (> 50 %) of occurrences of deleterious elements, which will likely negatively affect the large-scale Au recovery. Given the strong correlation between geochemical anomalies with the presence of intrusive bodies, structural fault systems and metallurgical data, a new methodology for prospective work is established that allows defining more precise areas for detailed exploration, which reduces risk and uncertainty in the initial stages of mining.

  • Sustainable Design Process for Obtaining a Cosmetic Emulsion from a
           Biotrade Approach

Abstract: This work analyzes the inclusion of the biotrade approach in the design of sustainable chemical processes, which represents a challenge for the development of technologies and products that take advantage of the opportunities of this approach. The objective is to generate process design alternatives for producing an emulsion for a cosmetic use from a biotrade approach. To this end, a case study was analyzed in which the selection of raw material from an Ecuadorian Amazon region was important to obtain a cosmetic emulsion. The technological alternatives for producing the cosmetic emulsion from Ungurahua oil considered sustainability, various production alternatives, and aspects of biotrade and the process design. The design was carried out through simulation with SuperPro Designer v10. The oil can be obtained through non-invasive harvesting practices, that preserve the ecosystem and promote biodiversity, which contributes to biotrade and the long-term viability of the project from technical, environmental, and social perspectives. The process design is characterized by its sustainability and technological viability. The designed technology uses renewable raw materials and energy sources and does not generate solid, liquid, or gaseous waste. Its implementation would have a social impact by developing sources of employment, and it is estimated that the investment would be recovered in 4.73 years if production exceeds 780 batches/year.

  • Comparison of Micromechanical Models for Predicting the Young’s Modulus
           of Fiber-Reinforced Epoxy

Abstract: Analytical models for predicting the mechanical properties of composite materials are useful when experimental procedures are not feasible. This study presents a review of micromechanical analytical models used to predict the Young’s modulus of fiber-reinforced composites (FRC). The theoretical models assessed in this work include the series and parallel models, the effective modulus approach, the Halpin-Tsai equations, and the Cox and Nilsen models, due to their relatively simple mathematical descriptions. The study focused on an epoxy matrix reinforced with carbon fiber, E-glass, and Kenaf (a natural fiber), as these fillers are commonly used in various industrial and research applications. The comparison between experimental and predicted values indicates that models such as the Halpin-Tsai and effective modulus approach provide better agreement with the experimental measurements for the targeted composites.

  • Artificial Lift Gas Flow Control System for Oil-Producing Wells

    • Abstract: Abstract: The research was geared toward the development of a flow control system for oil-producing wells through artificial gas lift using the Network Data Acquisition System (Net-DAS), to optimize the operations carried out by Remote Terminal Units (RTU) located in the control cabins near oil producing wells. The study was limited to the Gas Lift wells in the Carito field of Petroleos de Venezuela. S.A. (PDVSA). The variable to be measured is the gas flow that is injected into said wells through a control valve that is activated by an actuator that works in four operating states in the Net-DAS. However, variables such as pressure and temperature can also be viewed from the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system. The proposed control system is based on the LinPAC-8381 RTU with Net DAS architecture. The proposal enables the establishment of a local control by migrating the programming logic controller (PLC) control logic to the Net-Das architecture. This allows the plant operator to work in four states to control the amount of flow to be injected into the well: local control and remote control, which in turn is divided into manual, automatic and optimized remote control, which maximizes the extraction of crude oil. S.A. (PDVSA).

  • Ambient Air Quality in School Environments with Tactical Urban Planning
           Interventions in Cuenca, Ecuador

Abstract: In school environments, the current urban infrastructure prioritizes private vehicles over promoting active mobility, which leads to increase air pollution and health problems in children. Therefore, evaluating air quality in educational institutions is essential, especially considering the reconfiguration of public spaces. Consequently, the objective is to determine noise levels based on the NMPB-Routes-96 noise prediction model and to assess the concentration of settleable particles using the gravimetric method by collecting particles in open containers before and after tactical urbanism interventions. Another objective is to determine the concentrations of Aluminum (Al), Manganese (Mn), Zinc (Zn), Iron (Fe), Cobalt (Co), and Chromium (Cr) through biomonitoring with bryophytes. The results of settleable particles showed values higher than national and international regulations, and interventions resulted in a 30 % reduction in pollutant concentration. The sound pressure exceeded established limits at both local and national levels, and interventions did not demonstrate a significant reduction. Metal biomonitoring recorded concentrations in the following order from highest to lowest: Al, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cr, and Co; also, Zn presented a higher correlation with road traffic. In addition, during the investigation, socializations were carried out with the main actors. This investigation concluded that low air quality occurs in school environments. Therefore, tactical urbanism should be considered as a measure to mitigate pollution from vehicular traffic.

  • Characterization of Mechanical Properties of Mocora Palm Fiber for
           Structural Applications

Abstract: Industries such as textiles, construction, packaging, automotive and aviation have taken advantage of the mechanical and environmental characteristics provided by natural fibers. In this sense, the mechanical characterization of the mocora fiber and its compatibility as a composite material has been explored, considering that this endemic fiber of Ecuador has structural applications in an artisanal way. In this regard, this research seeks to characterize said fiber using scanning electron microscopy, by means of an acceleration voltage of 15 kV and 20 kV and magnification of 500x and 1.6Kx. Likewise, mechanical tests are carried out with ASTM-D 5034 standards for the braided fiber and ASTM D 2256-02 for the composite material using a universal testing machine. The thermal properties are determined by thermogravimetric analysis, developed using an initial temperature of 40 ℃ until reaching a limit temperature of 600 ℃ with a step of 15 ℃ per minute. Adhesion tests to unsaturated polyester resin are carried out using a resin solution with 20% styrene, 0.03% ethyl methyl ketone peroxide and 12% cobalt naphthalene. Through these methods, it was found that the fiber has a longitudinal distribution with agglomerated and tubular bodies without stress concentrators. Among the most notable characteristics is the percentage of elasticity, an important property in mechanical applications. Likewise, good resistance to degradation by high temperatures was found, although it also presented deficiencies in adequate adhesion to the resin. The characterization of this study allows us to demonstrate that mocora fiber has advantages over other structural fibers and is comparatively close to the performance of coconut fiber, which allows us to conclude that it has an important potential for application to the industry that seeks resistant materials, supporting the characterization of emerging Ecuadorian fibers for a competitive and economically circular industry.

Abstract: This paper proposes the analysis and implementation of a nonlinear backstepping controller to regulate the current in Grid-tied five-level inverter system via an LCL filter. Designing a robust regulator for nonlinear systems is often a challenging task in control theory. The study addresses the challenges of enhancing the performance of the conversion system by selecting appropriate regulated variables and ensures synchronization between the signals of the grid and the five-level inverter. Additionally, it includes a grid current control using the backstepping control method. This method is based on the Lyapunov stability approach, involves switching a five-level inverter with high-frequency modulation, and employs Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation as the selected modulation strategy. The proposed system configuration and the implementation of the backstepping control method are discussed step-by-step to ensure the efficiency of the system analysis. Simulation results in the MATLAB/Simulink environment validate the theoretical analysis. The nonlinear backstepping controller demonstrates excellent performance in tracking reference signals and responds to abrupt changes in the reference, highlighting its effectiveness for current control in grid-connected inverter systems.

  • Effects of Partial Replacement of Cement by Sugarcane Bagasse Ash on the
Settlement and Compressive Strength of Concrete

Abstract: The construction industry, crucial to emerging economies, emits approximately 30 % of global CO2 emissions. Cement, essential in concrete production, accounts for up to 15 % of the total volume, yet its manufacture releases around 7 % of CO2. It is therefore important to look for replacement alternatives such as sugarcane bagasse CBCA ash. In this investigation, mixtures were made with different percentages of CBCA (0 %, 5 %, 10 %, 15 % and 20 %), before mixing the aggregates and CBCA were carefully characterized, concrete molds were subsequently prepared in 10x20 cm cylinders, at the same time of the preparation of the molds the Slump test was carried out. At 7, 14 and 28 days of curing, the compression test of the concrete molds was performed. The results show that the 5% mixture showed a greater settlement, however, as the percentage of CBCA increases the settlement tends to decline. On the other hand, the compression strength at 28 days, the mixture with 0 % reached 177,47 kg/cm2, exceeding 175 kg/cm2 design. With 5 % CBCA, the average resistance was 136,07 kg/cm2, for 10 % 124,1 kg/cm2, for 15 % 97,75 kg/cm2 and for 20 % 69,84 kg/cm2. It is concluded that both settlement and resistance are directly related to the degree of specific surface value, specific gravity and combustion temperature. The use of CBCA is recommended in 5 %, with specific areas greater than 3 000 cm2/g, gravities greater than 2 000 kg/m3 and a combustion temperature of between 500-750 °C to ensure the obtaining of amorphous particles.
