  • Effects of organic manure and crop rotation system on potato (Solanum
tuberosum L.) tuber yield in the highlands of Awi Zone

    • Authors: Agegnehu Shibabaw, Getachew Alemayehu, Enyew Adgo, Folkard Asch, Bernhard Freyer
Abstract: Lack of sustainable soil fertility management system is a critical challenge in the highlands of Awi Zone. Important physicochemical properties of the soil are below the critical level to support crop growth. Hence, a study was undertaken with the aim of improving the yield of potato through organic treatments and sound crop rotation system. Two rotation systems and four levels of organic treatments were factorially arranged and laid out in RCBD with four replications. The organic treatments were: V1 = 0 t/ha farmyards manure (FYM); V2 = 2.5 t/h fresh sesbania green manure (FSB) V3 = 5 t/ha FYM; and V4 = 5 t/ha FYM +2.5 t/ha FSB applied in fixed plots for three years. Indeed, the rotation systems varied from year to year to estimate the changes in potato tuber yields due to the differences in crop rotation systems. Tuber yields of potato showed increasing trend over the period of the three years with the lowest in the first year, intermediate in the second year and the highest in the third year across all treatments. Among all, the highest total potato tuber yield (35.15 t/ha) was obtained at the combined application of 5 t/ha FYM +2.5 t/ha FSB and clover-wheat-potato rotation system in the third year. The treatment combination increased total potato tuber yield by 140% and 41% over that of the first and the second years and would be recommended as ecologically sound option in improving the productivity of potato. Keywords: Cropping system; farmyard manure; green manure; productivity; soil management

  • Soil physicochemical properties and their significance for sustainable
sugarcane production in Kesem Allaideghe plains irrigation project area,
           Eastern Ethiopia

    • Authors: Dhan Pal, Yihenew G. Selassie
Abstract: A feasibility study was carried out to assess the suitability of Allaideghe plains, located in middle awash valley, for the cultivation of sugarcane plantation. The project area, covering 38000 ha, lies between 9o 07’ to 9o 26’ N latitude and 40o 30’ to 40o 50’ E longitude. A detailed soil survey was carried out on 500 m x 500 m grid consisting 1520 auger holes and 76 soil profile observations. The soils of the entire project area were very deep (>200 cm). The textural classes included silty clay loam, clay and heavy clay which revealed that texture varied from fine to very fine with high clay content. Soil reaction (pH), electrical conductivity of saturated extract (ECe), exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP), cation exchange capacity (CEC), organic carbon (OC), CaCO3 ranged between 7.7 to 8.2, 0.9 to 8.0 dS m-1, 9.9 to 42.7%, 40.6 to 61.7 cmol (+) kg-1, 0.3 to 1.2 g kg-1, and 8.3 to 18.3 %, respectively. Soluble cation contents of Na, Mg, Ca and K varied from 8.5 to 20.2, 0.2 to 2.6, 4.7 to 12.6, and 0.1 to 0.2 meq l-1, respectively. Major hydraulic properties influencing water availability and irrigation scheduling for sugarcane included infiltration rate and hydraulic conductivity. Basic infiltration rate varied from 0.2 to 6.2 cm h-1 and in-situ hydraulic conductivity varied from 0.07 to 0.60 m d-1. Low hydraulic conductivity may cause waterlogging in the project area. In order to improve soil structure and water availability, addition of gypsum, plant residues and organic matter are recommended. Keywords: Soil survey, physical and chemical soil properties, infiltration rate, hydraulic conductivity

  • Effects of soil and water conservation practices on selected soil
           physico-chemical properties in Debre-Yakob Micro-Watershed, Northwest
           Ethiopia

    • Authors: Tigest Alemayehu, Getachew Fisseha
Abstract: Although different types of soil and water conservation practices (SWCPs) were introduced, the sustainable use of these practices is far below expectations, and soil erosion continues to be a severe problem in Ethiopia. Therefore, this study was conducted at Debre Yakobe Micro-Watershed (DYMW), Northwest Ethiopia with the general objective of finding out the effects of SWCPs on selected soil physico-chemical properties. Practices including non-conserved plot in the gentle slope (NCGS), non-conserved plot in the moderate slope (NCMS), bund with Sesbania sesban in the gentle slope (BSGS), bund with Sesbania sesban in the moderate slope (BSMS), bund with pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) in the gentle slope (BPGS) and bund with pigeon pea in the moderate slope (BPMS) were examined. Soil samples were collected from different land management plots and soil texture while bulk density (BD), pH, organic matter (OM), total nitrogen (TN), Available Phosphors (Av.P), and cation exchange capacity (CEC) were analyzed in the laboratory. Data were analyzed with the use of one-way analysis of
variance and simple regression methods. The results of the study revealed that there is significant difference (p< 0.05) between conserved and non-conserved plots. The conserved plots had the highest soil pH (BPMS) 6.7, OM (BPMS) 3.01%, TN (BSGS) 0.13%, Av.P (BPMS) 4.20 (ppm) and CEC (BSGS) 32.01 cmol(+) kg-1 but a lower BD (BPMS) 1.34 g cm-3; suggesting that bund accompanied by Sesbania sesban and pigeon pea were found to be effective in improving soil physico-chemical properties in the study area. Keywords: Biological practices, erosion, physical structure, soil properties

  • The effects of land use types and soil depth on soil properties of Agedit
           watershed, Northwest Ethiopia

    • Authors: Eyayu Molla Fetene, Mamo Yalew Amera
Abstract: Assessing the impacts of different land uses on soil physicochemical properties is a fundamental step towards sustainable land management. This study was conducted in Agedit watershed, northwest Ethiopia with the objective of determining the effects of land use and soil depth on soil physicochemical properties. Three major land use types: natural forest, grazing and cultivated lands were selected while soil samples were collected in the 0-20 and 20-40cm depths. Standard soil analytical procedures were followed in carrying out soil analysis. Statistical analysis revealed notable variations due to differences in land use type and soil depth. Sand and clay particles, bulk density, total porosity, pH, organic matter, total nitrogen, available phosphorus, cation exchange capacity and exchangeable K and Na were significantly affected (p ≤ 0.05 and/or p ≤ 0.01) by land use. In contrast, silt, particle density, carbon to nitrogen ratios, exchangeable Ca, and Mg and PBS were not significantly (p > 0.05) affected. With soil depth, higher mean values of total nitrogen, organic matter, exchangeable K and pH were recorded in the 0-20 cm than in the 20-40 cm depth. A shift from forest to other land use types caused a significant decline on soil fertility parameters which contributed to low agricultural productivity. The study area, therefore, needs immediate intervention to protect the remnant forests and to replenish the degraded soil properties for sustainable agricultural productivity. Keywords: cultivation, deforestation, grazing, land management, soil fertility

  • Prediction of bio-economically sustainable yield and optimum fishing
effort for the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus L.) fishery of Lake
           Hawassa, Ethiopia

    • Authors: Yosef Tekle-Giorgis
Abstract: The Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus, L. 1758) stock of Lake Hawassa, Ethiopia, was assessed to estimate bio-economically sustainable yield (MSY and MEY) and optimum fishing effort (fopt) using length-based analytical models (Jone’s Cohort Analysis and Thompson and Bell). Pertinent data (length, weight, catch, effort, etc.) were collected on a daily basis between May 2012 and June 2013 from the two landing sites, where fishermen at the northern and the southern part of the lake land their catch for retail. The assessment revealed an estimated current yield of 240.23 t/year and 216.33 t/year for the southern and northern part of the fishery of the lake, respectively. The predicted biologically maximum sustainable yield (MSY) was 240.2 t/year and 218.7 t/year for the southern and northern fishery, respectively, which were obtained at an F-factor of 1 and 1.5, respectively. On the other hand, the maximum economic return was generated from the southern and northern fishery at an F- factor of 0.8 and 1.4, respectively. Therefore, the level of effort at the time of sampling (F-current) should be reduced by 20 % for the southern fishery while the current effort of the northern fishery can be expanded by 40% in order to obtain the maximum economically sustainable yield. Accordingly, the optimum level of fishing effort (fopt) to be exerted at the lake level was estimated at about 650 nets per day in order to exploit O. niloticus stock of Lake Hawassa sustainably. Keywords: Analytical yield prediction models, Lake Hawassa, MEY, MSY, optimum fishing effort, O. niloticus, stock assessment
