Immediately upstream of Liège, the sedimentological study of a succession of high terraces of the Meuse has led to confirm stages in the evolution of the basin. The highest terraces were developed by the Meuse which had its source on the northern flank of the Massif de Rocroi. The plateau gravel (Fontaine at 200 m) finer than all the following is linked to the shore of the Chattian sea in regression. During the incision to 170 m, the river mainly reworked the aforementioned sublittoral gravel by adding slightly coarser elements. The gravel on the next terrace (Chokier-Haut at 165 m) is fundamentally different; it includes a new component originating from the metamorphic rock massifs of High Belgium which should respond to the capture of the Semois.

Catalysts are involved in many aspects of our daily life, but their true nature remains unknown to the majority of the general public. This article aims to explain what catalysts really are and to present some of their practical applications. Traditionally, catalysts have mainly come from the petroleum industry. This article highlights the principles of green chemistry, which advocates the use of environmentally-friendly resources and their application to the field of catalysis. We focus here on part of the research carried out in the Laboratory of Catalysis at the University of Liège dealing with the use of caffeine as a renewable raw material for the synthesis of biobased catalysts.

Soundscapes include sounds of biological, anthropogenic, and geophysical origin. Passive acoustic monitoring of marine ecosystems utilizes these sounds to gather information about these environments. Deep tropical coral reefs, also known as mesophotic reefs, are understudied habitats that harbor a high diversity of fish species. Reef fish produce a variety of sounds, some of which remain poorly understood. In this study, acoustic recordings were conducted in the mesophotic coral reefs of French Polynesia. The objective was to characterize the diel cycle of a specific previously discovered sound, known as the whoot. The "Under The Pole III" expedition provided the opportunity to collect data using acoustic recorders coupled with hydrophones, positioned at different depths (−60 m and −120 m) in Bora-Bora, Mangareva, Moorea, Rangiroa, Raroia, and Tikehau. The recordings were subsequently analyzed to detect and characterize the day/night cycle of the whoot sound. Differences between the two studied depths and among the different islands were identified. Generally, this sound was predominantly present during the early and late night, highlighting its nocturnal acoustic nature among the species producing the whoot. This result should contribute to the identification of the fish species responsible for this characteristic sound in the deep Polynesian underwater music scene and help improve the understanding of fish populations in mesophotic coral reefs through passive acoustics.

The Thier del Preu and Thier du Mont hills, located to the north of the village of Grand-Sart (Lierneux), host a coticule deposit which is still exploited today. The mineralogy of this area is not well documented, but during last decades, investigations carried out in the region have made it possible to identify more than 40 mineral species, including rare minerals such as eosphorite and kolbeckite. This paper also shows the complexity and the mineralogical variation of each of the three members of the Ottré Formation at Grand-Sart, and develops a comparison with the mineralogy observed in other typical localities of the region.

  • Diversity of hard tick (Acari: Ixodidae) infesting small ruminants in some
breeding farms in Tizi-Ouzou area (Northern Algeria)

    • Abstract: Ticks are hematophagous arthropods and obligate ectoparasites with a cosmopolitan distribution. They are of great medical and veterinary importance. Studying the composition of the tick fauna is a crucial step in establishing vector control programs. In this context, an inventory of hard ticks infesting small ruminants in the Tizi-Ouzou area was carried out over a one-year period, from December 2020 to November 2021. Using the direct collection technique on the host animal, a total of 663 animals examined, 170 were infested and a total of 1318 adult tick’s specimens were collected in four sampling sites. The result shows a tick diversity comprising six different species. The most abundant species was Rhipicephalus bursa (68.66%), followed by Rhipicephalus sanguineus (29.74%) and Ixodes ricinus (1.36%). Other species were less abundant, each representing only 0,08% of the total abundance. The highest specific richness was recorded in the Ain El Hammam site located at high altitude. A positive correlation was observed between the farms’ altitude and the tick diversity. The result of FCA analysis showed that distribution of ticks is related to altitude and habitat of tick’s species.

The vulnerability of the site of the city of Mila to mass movements is a major constraint to its urban development. Its morphological heritage largely explains its current dynamics. The large Quaternary flows, resulting from the dismantling of the northern flank of Marechau, have deviated the wadi Mila westwards to sink in the form of an arc and clear the hill of El Kherba. The massiveness of the latter allowed the development of a series of parallel gullies (paleo valleys), unevenly dug. Due to the lack of effective extraction, these gullies were filled in by erosion waste material. The contact surface between the bedrock and the fill material remained a potential failure surface. The frequency and intensity of the (probably partly induced) earthquakes are far from negligible. Indeed, after the invasion of the site by a rapid and massive urbanization, the induced effects of the last earthquakes were probably amplified, hence the damage observed.

  • The holoparasitic Orobanchaceae of Tlemcen region (north-western Algeria):
           diversity, distribution and host range

    • Abstract: The knowledge of the holoparasitic Orobanchaceae of Tlemcen region is updated through surveys based on eleven years of fieldwork, analysis and revision of bibliographic information and consultation of the main Herbaria related to the studied area. The detailed distribution in geographical units of the 20 taxa, belonging to the four genera: Boulardia, Cistanche, Orobanche and Phelipanche have been provided, together with habitat description and host plants. We also highlight the presence of taxa with marked chorological interest, rarely cited on the territory, such as O. alba, O. gracilis, O. hederae, P. portoilicitana and P. reuteriana. Note that the species: Cistanche violacea, Orobanche calendulae, Orobanche caryophyllacea, Orobanche reticulata, and Phelipanche cernuahave not been found in the Tlemcen area so far, so we will consider them as conflicting species to be searched.

  • The SALT survey of chemically-peculiar hot subdwarfs

    • Abstract: The Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) has surveyed a sample of 300 chemically-peculiar hot subdwarfs with a view to explore evolutionary pathways and connections between a large variety of stars. Observations have been obtained for the entire sample at intermediate resolution to provide classifications and atmosphere parameters, and a smaller sample at high resolution to permit detailed chemical abundance analyses. The first has provided a substantial sample of extremely helium-rich sdO stars, but has also led to significant discoveries of hot white dwarfs, pre-white dwarfs, heavy-metal subdwarfs and extreme helium stars. This paper provides an overview of the current status of the project.

  • The origin of subdwarf B stars

    • Abstract: The origin of subdwarf B stars (sdBs) is unclear. Different formation channels are proposed including: close-binary evolution, helium-mixing on the red giant branch and the hot flasher scenario. Circumstantial evidence exists that sdBs can result from single star evolution in high metallicity populations. We investigate this possibility by using membership in the thin, thick disk and halo populations as a metallicity indicator. Radial velocity measurements were com-bined with Gaia proper motions to calculate space motions in the Galaxy. Galactic orbits and population memberships were derived. Preliminary results indicate more sdBs are members of the thin disk (86 sdBs) than of thick disk and halo (28 sdBs). Apparently single sdBs are found among all three populations. We look into the temperature distributions of the different types and discuss implication for formation scenarios.
