XIX (Nineteen century latin-american thinking in chilean historical novel)

    • Authors: Maritza E. Aburto D.
      Pages: 7 - 20
AbstractThe following review intends to give an account of the main ideas put forward by prominent Latin-american intellectuals on issues of identity and the construction of new American nations after obtaining independence from Spain. These ideas can be found throughout many historical novels, where they are vivified thanks to literary fiction. This review considers authors such as the Argentinian Domingo F. Sarmiento and his novel Facundo, where he presents his famous “Civilization and Barbarism” thesis, of great influence on Latin-american thought and historical fiction during the nineteenth century. Also considered is Chilean author Benjamin Vicuña Mackenna and his socio-historical study on the Lisperguer family and La Quintrala, in which the Chilean colonial period is characterized by the abuse of power by Chile’s high class families, medioeval religious obscurantism and the venality of public servers. His work will influence every depiction of La Quintrala in future historical novels. José Enrique Rodó of Uruguay in Ariel, and José Martí of Cuba in Nuestra América (Our America) put forward ideas that validate a Latin-american identity, though the later puts a much heavier focus on americanism. Finally, cuban Roberto Fernández Retamar –in his Todo Calibán– puts forward the figure of Calibán as the american man, sacked and colonized. To carry out this study, both an analytical reading of the listed bibliography and an interpretative intertextual analysis of the same have been performed. We have concluded that Antonio Borquez’s chilean novel La Belleza de Demonio, La Quintrala (The Beauty of the Devil, La Quintrala) represents Sarmiento’s thought, being La Quintrala the expression of Barbarism, and, at the same time, also represents Vicuña Mackenna’s colonial obscurantism, in the form of a possessed woman who expresses herself through lust and ferocity. In Magdalena Petit’s canonical historical novel La Quintrala, the protagonist is again expression of Sarmiento’s Barbarism and Vicuña Mackenna’s ideas through the “witch”. Also, in Mercedes Valdivieso new historical novel Maldita yo entre las mujeres (Cursed Am I Amongst All Women), the author vindicates Catalina de los Ríos y Lisperguer as a woman in the flesh, and not as a mythical figure, reason by which it represents also the vindication of the american subject, as presented by Martí, and the Calibán, as put forward by Fernández Retamar. In this way, the new historical novel allows the voices of the defeated to emerge and offer new visions and perspectives.

(Preliminary study approach to the concept of limit of a function)

    • Authors: Elías Irazoqui Becerra, Antonio Medina Rivilla
      Pages: 21 - 31
AbstractThis paper presents an investigation into the concept of limit of a function at a point. This topic has received attention of many researchers during decades, the reason for this lies in its importance, along with the Derivative and Integral as the basic triad of Calculus. The ultimate goal of the study is to generate knowledge to the educational development of Teaching Activities for students, so that they contribute to a better understanding of the concept. To meet the above objective, a questionnaire, which was applied to 20 mathematicians teaching at universities in our country (Chile) was developed. In response to the above mentioned inquest, this study approaches to important questions, ie., if considered important the concept of limit and what are the common pitfalls on their teaching, among others. Then another source of research focused on the analysis of the texts of calculus that have been used to teaching. The above allowed revealing aspects as: the importance given to the concept and what is the way to approach it, that is, what approaches used for presentation. Following these studies and appealing to the teaching experience in this subject, this study materialized Learning Activities could materialize. One of the resources used in this item was the Winplot software.

wetlands with ornamental plants for removal of organic matter and
           nutrients contained in sewage)

    • Authors: Gabriela Morales, Daniela López, Ismael Vera, Gladys Vidal
      Pages: 33 - 46
AbstractConstructed wetlands are a viable sewage treatment in rural areas because of its low cost of operation and simplicity in management technology. Moreover it is noteworthy that the efficiency of removal of organic matter and nutrients is up to 95% and 60%, respectively. However, most research has focused on the functionality of common plants such as Phragmites spp., Typha spp., Schoenoplectus spp. Despite the widespread use of these species, it is important to evaluate the use of ornamental species such as, Zantedeschia aethiopica, Canna spp. and Iris spp., because this technology to enhance the environmental and landscape benefits.Due to this, the aim of this paper is to make a review that shows the feasibility of using subsurface flow constructed wetlands planted with ornamental species for the removal of organic matter and nutrients in sewage.Preliminarily, it is possible to indicate that the ornamental plants have shown an efficiency of removal of organic matter measured as Biochemical Oxygen Demand after 5 days (BOD5) varying between 70 and 93%, while in the case of nutrients, removal of Total Nitrogen (NT) varies between 45 and 73%, and Total Phosphorus (TP) between 40 and 80 %. Because ofthese, itcan conclude that the constructed wetlands with ornamental plants can treat a sewage in similar to those presented by common plant conditions. Moreover, ornamental plants delivered an aesthetic value to the environment, with potential economic benefit to the users of the system.

pastoral de migraciones INCAMI-Iquique (Migration networks and the
integration of migrants: the case of pastoral migrations INCAMI-Iquique)

    • Authors: Romina Ramos Rodríguez
      Pages: 47 - 62
AbstractIn the process of accommodation of migrants in transit or host societies, it is important to analyze the articulation of migration networks. This concern arises from considering it an important factor of social mobility, although a number of limitations context that affect their interrelationships are also taken into account. This paper is first devoted to discuss some features of the concept of migration networks focusing on both its prescriptive definition and in its operation. Then, a particular case of joint migration networks from the experience of Pastoral Migration Iquique is investigated. The discussion explores into theoretical characteristics of networks relating to its scope, limitations and spatial trajectories.
