  • On the Translation of The Invasion Equation

    • Authors: Jingyuan Zhang
Abstract: From the perspective of Skopos Theory, this article aims at the research on the English to Chinese translation of The Invasion Equation, a medical text in English concerning oncology, selected from The New Yorker. Starting from the generalization of translation practice, it introduces the background of the translation, the nature of the text, and the specific translation tasks. Then the author briefly introduces the source and content of the medical text, discusses the development and application of Skopos Theory in medical translation, analyzes the characteristics of medical English, and explains how to use Skopos Theory to guide specific medical translation practice. The core part of the research is the analysis of translation strategies. Under the guidance of Skopos Theory, the author discusses strategies of medical translation through detailed analysis of typical examples in the medical text. Since the difficulties encountered in translation are mainly concentrated on professional vocabulary and sentence patterns, the translation of medical text is mainly studied from two aspects: medical vocabulary and long sentences. In translation, it is a must for the translator to follow the three rules of Skopos Theory, namely skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule, and improve the readability of the medical text under the premise of achieving the purpose of translation.

  • An Empirical Study on English Learning Beliefs for Art Students in Higher
           Vocational College

    • Authors: Bo Zhang
Abstract: English teaching methodology is the external factor of learning rather than internal factor that can play a decisive role in learning to a large extent. Many researchers have gradually switched their attention to probing into various factors that affect English achievements from the perspective of students, which is called individual differences research and have become one of the research priorities. What beliefs learners hold will have direct influence on the choice of English learning strategies as well as the ultimate effect of learning. For this reason, vocational English teachers should strive to help students establish positive and beneficial English learning beliefs and get rid of the negative and detrimental English learning beliefs, with a view to helping them to improve their English proficiency.

  • Design and Analysis of the Basic Physics Practicum Model Based on the
Higher Order Thinking Laboratory as a Model for 21st Century Learning
           Practicum

    • Authors: Ana Dhiqfaini Sultan, Ma’ruf Ma’ruf, Riri Kurniawan, Nurfadillah Nurfadillah, Ariani Ariani, Muhammad Hasbi Assidiq
Abstract: The type of research used is development research, with a Research and Development (R&D) research design. This research design is used to produce a product and test the effectiveness of a product. The development procedures are (1) needs analysis; (2) product development (design, manufacture and product validation); (3) product trials; and (4) product revision. The participants for the product trial were physics education students at the University of Muhammadiyah Makassar who programmed the Basic Physics I Practicum course with a total of 13 people. In order to obtain complete data and for the sharpness of data analysis, several research instruments will be used, namely: Higher-order thinking skills test. The student response questionnaire in this study was used to determine student responses about the HOTS-based physics practicum model that was developed and its implementation process. Based on the results of the development of the HOTS-based practicum model starting from the design stage to the revision stage of the HOTS-based practicum model product that the HOTS-based practicum model products produced for Basic Physics practicum activities as a 21st century practicum model, have the following characteristics: (a) based on constructivism theory , (b) oriented towards solving problems through practicum activities, (c) consisting of nine practicum activities which are included in three parts of the HOTS-based practicum model, namely: introduction, core, and closing, (d) Setting of activities is cooperative-collaborative, ( e) digital data processing system. The use of the HOTS-based practicum model has high effectiveness in improving the HOTS skills of physics teacher candidates. The use of the HOTS-based practicum model in Basic Physics practicum activities received positive responses from all test subject students implementing the HOTS-based practicum model in Basic Physics practicum activities.

  • Learning Styles and Technology Implementation of Special Education
           Teachers in the New Normal

    • Authors: Gengen G. Padillo, Rey Francis T. Nacorda, Jane Mae N. Conag, Ramil P. Manguilimotan, Raymond C. Espina, Reylan G. Capuno, Jonathan O. Etcuban, Honorio C. Añora
Abstract: This research evaluates special education teachers' learning styles and technological implementation at SpEd Schools in Mandaue City, Cebu, and Kananga Leyte, both in the Philippines, during the school year 2020–2021. It aimed to determine the Special Education Teachers' learning styles as well as the status of technology implementation of new learning modes during a pandemic. Because of the new setup for the educational platform in Special Education, this research also sought to gather information on the numerous concerns and problems associated with technology deployment, as well as the essential support and assistance in addressing such challenges. This study used a mixed-methods approach. A survey design will be used in quantitative research. Qualitative research, on the other hand, will employ a pragmatic qualitative research approach. Respondents in this study included twenty (20) Special Education Teachers from Mandaue City Central SpEd School - Elementary, ten (10) Special Education Teachers from Mandaue City Central SpEd School - High School, and twenty (20) Special Education Teachers from Kananga Central School. They answered the modified survey form as well as the interview. Frequency count and percentage, weighted mean and standard deviation, Chi-square test of independence, and theme analysis are among the statistical treatments applied to the data. The majority of Special Education teachers are reasonable, proactive, spontaneous, and clear, according to the data. It establishes that computer technology is commonly used for organizational and educational purposes. In general, it shows that a teacher's profile has a significant link to their learning styles, level of technological integration, and process integration. The creation of an intervention strategy is proposed as a solution to this problem.

  • The Effect of Goal Orientation to the Academic Performance in Mathematics
           of Grade 10 Students

    • Authors: Anneth Joy M. Deraja, Roxanne R. Diola, Neil Christine V. Jose, Jennifer Ann M. Monsalud, Christian Obal, Ian I. Urbano, Jay-R A. Manamtam
Abstract: Mathematics is a multifaceted activity; it has a lot of faces, even those one we can’t notice. Each facet is worth it to deal with so that every individual will be prepared for their future. It provides us with something to walk through difficulties. It is beneficial to set a goal for each individual, whether it is a short-term goal, long-term goal, or even the goal that falls in the middle. Setting a goal has been used extensively in a variety of ways, even on the outside of the school or in any settings. It could possibly bring you a positive achievement if follows correctly. The main purpose of this study was to determine if the goal orientation of the grade 10 students of one school in Region IV-A (CALABARZON) Rizal has a significant effect to their academic performance. As regards to the data of the significant effect of goal orientation to the academic performance of grade 10 students, the p-value of less than 0.001 revealed that the task goal orientation of the respondents has a significant effect to their academic performance in mathematics. The p-value of 0.007 implied that the ego goal orientation of the respondents has also had a significant effect on their academic performance in mathematics. Therefore, the researchers concluded that there is a significant effect of the respondents’ goal orientation, although the effect is very low and low, respectively. For the betterment, it is advised that researchers conducting a comparable study on goal orientation expand their scope to include student study habits, which may be influenced by a variety of circumstances.
