  • An Investigation of the Relationship between Thematic Thinking and
Innovative Work Behavior among Managers: The Mediating Role of
           Open-mindedness

    • Authors: Rakhshan Ummar, Sharjeel Saleem, Muhammad Abrar, Arfan Ali
Abstract: There exists empirical evidence that thematic thinking through the mediation of innovativeness impacts employee performance. We, in an explorative manner, went further to understand the underlying mechanism which promotes innovative work-related behavior. We collected data from individuals at R&D assignments of various organizations where new ideas and products are developed. A total of 295 survey forms were collected, and the analysis was done using the PROCESS Macro for SPSS in order to test the mediation model. The results revealed that thematic thinking was positively linked to open-mindedness and innovative work behavior; also open-mindedness mediated the relationship between thematic thinking and innovative work behavior. This study has explored, tested, and empirically proved a novel relation in the local context of R&D related individuals (managers) working in diverse fields. The current research extends thematic thinking in the domain of cognition, innovation, and workplace behavior. It concludes that managerial decision making is elemental in performing innovatively. Practical and managerial implications, limitations, and future research directions are discussed to enrich the domain of thematic similarity further.

  • Determinants of Return on Assets

    • Authors: Ali Raza Sattar
Abstract: The objective of this study is to examine the Determinants of ROA in the cement industry in Pakistan from 2013-2017. The quantile regression is run at different quantiles in Stata 12. The policy makers of cement industry must realize that the capital structure has negative impact on return on assets. The tangibility also has negative impact at 0.80 quantile and 0.90 quantile, so the policy makers must have to look their assets strength in order to gauge the return on assets. Finally the size is highly significant at 0.80 quantile and 0.90 quantile and has been found as positive determinant of return on assets.

  • Relationship between Procrastination, Job Performance and Mindfulness in
Male and Female Employees: A Mediating Model

    • Authors: Zafar Ahmad
Abstract: Self-determination theory is a commonly applied framework for identifying and understanding procrastination, mindfulness and job performance. This approach has further been used to comprehend telecom employee issues. Apart from previous theoretical recommendations, there exist only a few of empirical studies on above matter. The endeavor of the current study is to investigate the mediating role of mindfulness between procrastination and job performance across male and female employees. Purposive sampling technique was applied based on cross-sectional approach. Mindfulness Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS; Brown & Ryan, 2003), Tuckman’s Procrastination Scale (TPS; Tuckman, 1991), and Job Performance Scale (JP-S; Wright, Kacmar, Mcmahan, &Deleeuw, 1995) have been used to a sample of 400 male and female employees  from different telecom’s employee of Rawalpindi and Islamabad in Pakistan. The correlation as well as moderation to mediation analyses have been used to investigate the study data. Findings demonstrate that procrastination is associated with lower level of mindfulness in female and male employees. Additionally, mindfulness is also linked to higher level of job performance in female employees. Moreover, mindfulness had positive influence to enhance job performance in male employees. Results reveal that procrastination is associated with higher level of job performance because higher level of the mindfulness across female and male employees. These results support the self-determination theory recommending that mindfulness could decrease procrastination and increase job performance in male and female employees. These findings also suggest that procrastination could inhibit job performance in male and female employees.

  • The Relationship among Directors' Pay, Corporate Governance, and Firm
Performance: Evidence from Financial Sector of Pakistan

    • Authors: Aamir Inam Bhutta, Muhammad Fayyaz Sheikh, Jahanzaib Sultan, Muhammad Azeem Naseer
Abstract: This research empirically examines the effect of firms' performance and corporate governance attributes on directors' pay. To attain the objective, the data for the period from 2007 to 2014 are retrieved from annual reports of 52 listed financial firms. Return on assets and return on equity are utilized to measure performance. Board size, board independence, board ownership and CEO duality are employed as corporate governance practices. Using the random effect model, the performance has positively related to directors’ pay, but level of significance is sensitive across performance proxies. The board independence has negatively significantly influenced the directors' pay. However, board ownership significantly positively influenced the directors’ pay. Furthermore, board size and CEO duality both have not significantly associated with directors’ pay.

  • In Pursuit of Inclusive Institutional Growth: A Comparative Pattern of
           Selected Asian Countries

    • Authors: Aribah Aslam, Abdul Farooq
Abstract: The study compares less developed countries (LDCs) with middle developed countries (MDCs) in the retrospect of Inclusive growth embracement. Fixed effect and random effect (FEM) have been employed to compare the both data sets of countries and then based upon results, policies have been formulated which could accelerate inclusive growth in LDCs. Results suggest that growth acceleration and institutions alone doesn’t have a significant impact on inclusive growth. On the other hand, if growth acceleration occurs in the presence of institutions, it leads to inclusive growth in MDCs& LDCs. Except for health quality, no independent variable has significant impact on inclusive growth in LDCs. Whereas, nearly all independent variables showed significant impact on inclusive growth in MDCs. Unlike MDCs, inclusive growth remains impervious in LDCs, particularly owing to the poor quality of education. Weak institutional structure further adds to the miseries of LDCs. The study suggests that LDCs are trapped at only necessary condition of inclusive growth i.e. GDP per capita income growth. If they wish to achieve high inclusive growth, they must also take care of sufficient condition of inclusive growth i.e. change in their institutional structure. This could be done by following the leading variables to inclusive growth; which includes primarily expansion in Health and educational quality.

Use of Electric Vehicles in Malaysia

    • Authors: Hamed Khazaei
Abstract: Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) must deal with several concerns, such as battery range, infrastructures, maintenance and spare parts. In other hand, BEVs like any other new technology, have a very small market share at their initial stage. Moreover, with rising attention in global warming, and concerns of possible increase in gas and oil prices in future, several car manufacturers have started producing electric and hybrid cars. These aspects have also attracted people to have intention of using electric cars. In countries having high contribution of renewable energies in electricity production, electric cars have direct effect on healthier environment. The aim of this paper is to study the impact of social influence, facilitation condition, Price value, performance expectancy, and personal innovativeness on intention to use of electric vehicles in Malaysia. Respondents of study were lecturers and postgraduate students in University Technology Malaysia and employees in five companies in Kuala Lumpur. The results of this study evidenced that social influence, price value, performance expectancy, and personal innovativeness have positive influence on intention to purchase of a full electric vehicle. However, the results showed negative influence of facilitating condition on intention to use of BEVs.

  • Role of Family Firms to Uplift the Financial Performance and Investment
Opportunities of Listed Manufacturing Firms of Pakistan

    • Authors: Muhammad Zulfiqar, Muhammad Kashif Khurshid, Sadeen Ghafoor, Aamer Saleem
Abstract: This study is conducted to analyse the relationship of Ownership Structure with Firm Performance in non-financial companies listed at Pakistan Stock Exchange during the period 2008 to 2013. The basic focus of this study was related to the performance of family firms as compared to non-family firms. The distinction between both types has been explained in literature with the help of definitions given by different authors and scholars. Keeping in view the research aims and objectives the non-financial sector of Pakistan is taken as population. Simple random sampling technique is used in accordance to research requirements and extracted a sample of 120 firms for the purpose of analysis. All these firms are listed at Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX). Investment Opportunities (Tobin’s Q), Return on Assets (ROA) and Return on Equity (ROE) have been used as a proxy variable to explore the firm value and firm’s financial performance. Sophisticated data analysis techniques such as descriptive, correlational, panel data regression analysis have been used. Results showed that Family firms are negatively correlated and Non-Family firms give better performance. On the basis of results obtained through data analysis it is concluded that Firm Performance critically depends on Managerial Ownership. Panel data analysis has shown that firm leverage and size has no relationship with proxy variables while remaining independent variables have significant relationship with performance variables. Agency problems arise due to increase in Managerial Shareholdings in Pakistani context, which ultimately affects the performance of the firms.

  • Pakistani Physicians: Exploring the Paradox of Public Service Motivation
           and User Orientation

    • Authors: Rizwan Shabbir, Muhammad Abrar, Mohsin Bashir, Sharjeel Saleem, Arfan Ali, Fasih Asghar
Abstract: The desire to support single beneficiary of public services (user orientation) has divergence with desire to support society at large, both motivations compete in same dimensional space. Extra ordinary usage of broad spectrum antibiotics creates negative externalities for society as large because excessive use of antibiotics creates resistance among bacteria that become hard and expensive to cure. There exists large gap to comprehend difference between discrete choices of both motivations of public service. The antibiotics prescriptions behavior of Pakistani general physicians (Doctors) has been analyzed in this study to investigate the association between Public Service Motivation and user orientation with this behavior. 250 Pakistani general practitioners were chosen in both private and public sector to investigate the PSM relationship with user orientation. The findings indicate that there is different association between Public Service Motivation and user orientation regarding prescription behavior of the general physicians (Doctors). This entails that it is necessary to investigate this behavior difference to know whether the public service provider is fascinated towards helping single beneficiary or be concerned more about society.

  • Viewpoints of Experts of Agricultural Jihad Centers toward the
Agricultural Extension: New Approach in Fars Province

    • Authors: Narges Ansari, Kurosh Rezaei-Moghaddam, Mahsa Fatemi
Abstract: Despite the numerous efforts have been done to develop and modernize the agricultural sector of Iran, this important sector has faced many serious challenges. The main role of agricultural extension in developing countries is to transfer new technologies created by research organizations of the public sector through proper methods such as exhibition, farm visits, meeting with farmers, using media, etc. Agricultural extension system is one of the most important means of diffusing agricultural advanced findings and also providing educational and advisory services which play a vital role in the development process, especially rural development. Agricultural extension in Iran doesn’t have a favorable situation and hasn’t been able to grow itself in terms of the approaches and extension methods, the formulation of aims and tasks, and organizing structure and organization. Therefore, it is essential that Iran’s agricultural extension system, while addressing the challenges and failures, prepares itself for more effective management of future changes. This study was carried out in Fars province using survey research method. The stratified random sampling was used in the research. The statistical population of the research was 130 experts of the agricultural Jihad center of Fars. The findings showed that there is a difference between the performance of different activities in the pilot and non-pilot centers from the experts’ point of view. The findings showed that attitude variables were the most effective in predicting the regression model. At last, some recommendations were presented due to the research results in order to improve the performance of service centers’ activities.

  • Impact of Openness on Economic Growth in Developing Economies: An
           Empirical Analysis

    • Authors: Bin Sheng, Sumbal Fatima, Muhammad Saqib Irshad, Muhammad Ramzan
Abstract: A country’s openness has been one of the primary driving forces for stimulating growth. Among researchers, it is still controversial to conclude openness-growth relationship. It might be the result of ignoring the mediation effect of some conditional variables. Although some papers have found that openness has a positive impact on economic growth, others have seriously questioned the significance of this finding. The objective of this study is to empirically explore openness-growth relationship using fixed capital stock as a mediator variable in a panel data set of 19 developing economies spanning 1980 to 2013. The study examines the relationship between trade openness and economic growth. The results outline that the direct impact of trade openness on economic growth is negative, while it tends to exert a positive effect on economic growth when fixed capital formation is taken as a mediating variable and show a threshold. The findings of the study may help policy-makers in selected developing countries to take advantage of increasing international trade by considering domestic development level of fixed capital formation.
