  • Early Reading Difficulties among Qillisoo Primary School Children in
           Ethiopia: Reflections from Teachers, Children, and Parents

    • Abstract: This study aimed to assess early reading difficulties among Qillisoo primary school children in Chiro Town, Oromia, Ethiopia: reflections from subject teachers, children, and parents. An explanatory mixed research design was used in the study. Using stratified and simple random techniques, the study included 108 children, 101 parents, and three English teachers. Questionnaires, classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis were used to collect the data. As a result, questionnaires were distributed to both parents and children. During a reading lesson, subject teachers were interviewed using semi-structured interview questions, and classroom observation was used to investigate the classroom setting. A document review for attendance and timetable was also performed to assess children who were late or absent from class. The findings of the study revealed that a variety of challenges hampered children's reading ability, including a lack of textbooks and learning facilities (limited chairs and desks, class size, fixed desks), a lack of preschool exposure, a lack of parent awareness about the importance of reading, children's workload at home, textbook variation (coloured vs. no coloured), and parent's residential areas and occupation status. Parents who are educated report using a variety of methods to assist their children, including discussing their children's reading abilities with both their children and their teachers, assessing their children's reading abilities and assisting them in practicing reading, purchasing a variety of supplementary books, designing home reading activities, and checking their children's exercise books to see what they have learned. Based on the findings of this study, parents and schools should make reading materials available to children, and children should be encouraged to develop their ways of practicing reading English on their own.

  • The Importance of the Application of the Metaverse in Education

    • Abstract: In the early 90's, and especially in some American universities, with the emergence of virtual reality, virtual environments and their manipulation began to be implemented, achieving important advances that have led to improvements in research through changes in the perception of the subject, modeling, communication processes and the development of 3D virtual classrooms.
      These advances have led to the metaverse, as an environment where humans interact socially as avatars, and especially its application in the world of education in the fields of entertainment, tele-education, educational research, learning environments, etc.
      According to technologists, this year will separate the thinkers from the builders, and then the technical advances of the last few years will produce the first steps this year in making the metaverse a reality. Advances will largely be attributed to ever-better graphics processing units (GPUs), photorealistic 3D engines, faster content generation through volumetric video and artificial intelligence, the increasing prevalence of cloud computing and 5G, as well as a more sophisticated and better understood blockchain infrastructure.
      But from a human experience perspective, one development stands out above all others: extended reality (XR) technologies. These include virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and brain-computer interfaces (BCI), which together are positioned as the next computing platforms in their own right.

  • From Months to Days—An Efficient Microsoft-Excel Database: A Case of Dam
           Maintenance in United Arab Emirates

    • Abstract: The subject of this study is the phenomenon of the success of an electronic program (Microsoft-Excel®) for the dam maintenance database. Project improvement includes three phases with a duration of 2 years. The current Excel programming is free, in contrast to specialized software, which costs hundreds of thousands of dollars. More than 6,000 cells were programmed with many smart logarithmic equations. The purpose of this study is to explain, in a practical and theoretical framework, the reasons that cause the distinguished project results (reduction of the completion of maintenance reports from months to 5–10 working days) with low-cost efficiency. Therefore, this leads to increasing the agility of maintenance work fulfilments (effectiveness). Particularly, 11 criteria were designed to compare the status of the project; before and after; improvement. Theoretically, this study adopted the case-study research approach. It aims at setting enablers (actions) that lead to a specific outcome (theory - model building) of the current practice. The study sample was represented by the project team themselves. As a result, the study model (theory) estimated six elements (variables). Generally, the reasons for the success included three elements: technical, managerial and personal factor. These factors led the maintenance project to achieve high efficiency, accuracy and effectiveness. As a comprehensive recommendation, if any global construction institution (such as the Dams Department) intends to implement a similar e-project, its focus should not be limited to the electronic aspect; rather, the managerial and personal aspect should be the focus. In addition, this e-project is a ready base for an optimized technological platform.

  • Determination of Optimum Conditions with Regression Analysis within the
           Scope of 6 Sigma for Eliminating Caking Problem in Nitrogen Fertilizers

    • Abstract: In the nitrogen fertilizer industry, the nitrogen content of chemical fertilizers is an important parameter that determines its physical strength, storage capacity and storage life. The production variables that determine this physical parameter, which is characterized as degradation and caking, can be expressed as the characteristics that determine the course of the chemical process. Although there are improvements in reaction conditions to solve the caking problem, the cost problem of the manufacturer limits the processing conditions. For this reason, in order to minimize the cost problem in any nitrogen fertilizer production process, the analysis of working conditions and the development of quality management systems accordingly constitute the focus of the manufacturer. In this study, within the scope of lean production, regression analysis of the 6-sigma quality method system was performed, the process parameters during the production were analyzed, the optimum conditions were determined and the effect on the production cost was investigated by comparing with the current production conditions.

  • Investigation of the Physiochemical Structure and UV Absorption Properties
           of Cottonseed Hull and Kernel

    • Abstract: This work has investigated the morphology, chemical structure and UV absorption properties of cottonseed hull and kernel, as part of an assessment of these materials for use as potential UV absorbing and/or medical compounds. The morphological analysis of the samples revealed that cottonseed kernel has a porous and homogenous morphology. By comparing the FTIR of cottonseed hull and kernel, it was found that the kernel sample has more polyphenol groups. Moreover, an examination of the UV absorption spectra showed the kernel tissue had stronger absorption spectra in both the UVA (320-400nm) and UVB (290-320nm) regions than material from the hull. Thus, the present study demonstrated that the cottonseed kernel could be a promising source of natural UV absorber.
