Abstract: This special issue of the Kennedy Institute of Ethics Journal is devoted to raising the profile of Mutual Aid and its role in contemporary solidarity, political engagement, and community change. Mutual Aid refers to a joint theory and praxis of aiding one another in a non-hierarchical, non-judgmental, and frequently reciprocal fashion. Characterized by the slogan "Solidarity Not Charity," Mutual Aid is an exchange of goods, services, or social support between equals, with the aim of mutual liberation. This discussion of Mutual Aid is at once timely and perennial. In recent years, Mutual Aid networks have multiplied exponentially, driven by the upsurge of needs during the Covid-19 pandemic. Where formal institutions ... Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the inadequacies and inequities of frayed US formal social safety nets, as government and nonprofits failed to fully meet basic needs for food, shelter, sanitation, safety, and health care—especially for marginalized populations. In response, mutual aid networks quickly formed or expanded to take on the responsibility of caring for their own members, responding to job losses, housing instability, food insecurity, and unmet medical needs in the absence of government support. These mutual aid networks established themselves through a variety of online platforms and mobilized grassroots efforts to support the basic needs of neighbors, friends, and fellow community members. Abstract: The participation of mutual aid support groups played a vital role in the success of the #EndSARS protests of 2020. This solidarity through mutual aid support during the #EndSARS protests is the only time that Nigerians have come together with one voice in a common struggle against their oppressors. In fact, it is observable that during the #EndSARS protests, religion was unplugged. Religion affects almost everything in Nigeria, including politics, the economy, health, and social sectors. There is nothing in Nigeria that, when done, is not affected by religious sentiments. Thus, Nigerians, just like some Africans, are notoriously religious, and religion permeates all areas of life so that it is not easy or possible ... Read More PubDate: 2023-08-15T00:00:00-05:00

Abstract: It is uncontroversial that we should do good, when possible. Still, we disagree about how to achieve good. Effective Altruism is a popular social movement that contends that we should do the most good possible by sourcing one's personal donations to the organizations that most effectively address humanity's most severe problems.1 These issues include, but are not limited to, access to food and clean water, adequate health care, and providing measures to avoid preventable disease.2 However, because Effective Altruists are committed to doing the most good in the most effective ways, some argue that it is wrong to help those nearest to you.3 These Effective Altruists view impartiality as a key quality of fairness: ... Abstract: In recent years, effective altruists like Peter Singer and William MacAskill have recommended earning to give as a strategy for doing more good in the world.1 Instead of becoming a charity worker, Singer (2015) argues, you should try to work in finance if you can:There is usually no shortage of applicants for jobs with charities, so the charity will appoint someone else who will probably do almost as good a job as you would have done. "Almost" because if you had been offered the job, we can assume the charity considered you the best applicant for the position; but the difference between you and the next-best applicant is unlikely to be great. As a charity worker, therefore, you are largely replaceable. Working in ... Read More PubDate: 2023-08-15T00:00:00-05:00
