Abstract: In this issue's lead article, "Adolescent Medical Transition is Ethical: An Analogy with Reproductive Health," Florence Ashley argues that insofar as we accept that abortion and birth control can be ethical interventions for adolescents, so, by analogy, should we treat interventions such as puberty blockers that aid in gender transition as ethical. None of these interventions treat illness or pathology, but rather they operate on healthy bodies, not in order to cure, but in order to help patients live in line with their fundamental self-conception and to realize their embodied goals. Parenting, pregnancy, and gender all go to the heart of our embodied identities and sense of self, they point out. Moreover, Ashley ... Read More PubDate: 2022-07-08T00:00:00-05:00

Abstract: Transgender adolescents, whose gender identity does not correspond to the gender they were assigned at birth, may pursue transitionrelated medical interventions including puberty blockers, hormone therapy, and, more rarely, surgical interventions. Adolescent medical transition aims at preventing or altering the development of sexual characteristics to achieve the individual's gender embodiment goals. Given its purpose, the effectiveness of adolescent medical transition is defined by its ability to achieve the sought physiological outcomes—a standard undisputedly met. Offering transition-related medical care to adolescents is ethically justified regardless of proven mental health benefits, that is, regardless of ... Read More PubDate: 2022-07-08T00:00:00-05:00

Abstract: We acquire many of our beliefs from the testimony of others, including experts, and from social institutions, such as science, that are in charge of generating knowledge. Knowledge generation is social in at least three ways. First, it depends on an apt division of cognitive labor among researchers (Kitcher 1990). Second, it depends on the existence of justified trust among them (Hardwig 1985). Third, hypotheses must undergo a social process of critical scrutiny and evaluation, as in peer review, to acquire the status of knowledge (Longino 2002).Unequal power relations may obstruct the generation of knowledge. The rich and powerful may bring about acceptance of skewed views or artificially manufacture uncertainty ... Read More PubDate: 2022-07-08T00:00:00-05:00

Abstract: In the United States, racial disparities in the treatment of pain are well documented. Across a variety of conditions and settings, racialized1 patients are much less likely to receive adequate pain treatment than White patients. These disparities are explained through multiple causal routes: the behavior and biases of health care providers, structural barriers that impact access to health care, and individual behaviors related to seeking treatment. There are also documented disparities in the experience of pain across racial and ethnic lines, with racialized patients experiencing more pain than others. These disparities are often explained with reference to genetic or psychological individual differences. While ... Read More PubDate: 2022-07-08T00:00:00-05:00
