  • Rethinking War, Nature, and Supernature in Early Modern Scholasticism:
           Introduction

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The following articles reconsider early modern European writings on just war theory and its relationship with religious war inside and outside the European universities, across Catholic and Protestant Europe.1 This early modern writing on warfare has not received sustained and professional analysis from English-speaking historians. This introduction will summarize the historiography of the just war among Anglophone historians, positing that just war theory offers a valuable perspective on the wider history of political thought. Introduced next are two major groups of sources that have been omitted almost completely from these Anglophone histories: discussions of warfare by Franciscan scholastics and others who ... Read More

  • Warfare, Christianity, and the Law of Nature

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In 1516, Erasmus's figure of Peace insisted not only that "Nature [has] provided all these arguments for peace and concord" but that Christ himself "whose teaching is so far superior to Nature's" promoted "peace and mutual good will" above all else.1 These words capture something of the ambivalence of Christians about warfare and its relationship to natural law, especially at the start of the Reformation. Indeed, the effort to show how war might be legitimate for Christians led not merely to a series of refinements in just war theory but to a fundamental reevaluation of the relationship between natural law and the will of God.2 Natural law was central to the analysis of war, just as it was central to any discussion ...            the Role of Force and Free Will in the Development of a Reformed
           Missiology

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: "The papists preceded us by their example. We should not at all be ashamed to perceive and learn from them the good things that can be adapted for the benefit of the church."1In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Catholics far exceeded Protestants in their writings on missiology and their attempts to convert non-Christian peoples. To explain the differences in Catholic and Protestant involvement in and thought on missionary work, scholars point to the practical and theological obstacles faced by Protestant missionaries and nations. Practical obstacles included the internal tensions between different Protestant groups and the lack of a global trade network or colonial empire, which hindered a coordinated ... Read More

  • Seventeenth-Century Scotism and the War Just on Both Sides

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: A perennial question within the Western just war tradition has been whether a war can be just on both sides. "War just both on both sides" refers to a situation in which both sides have the right to launch and conduct war against the other, that is, they both fight justly in the ius ad bellum sense.1 The possibility of wars just on both sides (hereafter WJBS) has momentous implications—most importantly that if both sides are equally just, war comes to be seen as a contest capable of adjudicating a dispute that cannot be resolved on the merits of the case. Victory is no longer just a military outcome but, rather, creates new rights for whoever happens to win.Humanists such as Rafael Fulgosius and Alberico Gentili ... Read More

  • The Jewish Family, Forced Baptism, and Holy War in Early Modern Roman
           Scotism

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: While early modern Europeans often turned to the treatment of American Indians when thinking about rights, war, and empire, Franciscan theorizing about evangelization and force was prompted less by the conquest of the Americas and more by the local and domestic characteristics of European life.1 For those Franciscans who followed the theology of the fourteenth-century Franciscan theologian John Duns Scotus, the treatment of Jewish families provided vital material for reflection on the rights of princes and subjects, Christians and pagans, parents and children.2 Franciscan discussions of the Jewish family always considered the relationship between force and evangelization within Christian political jurisdictions ... • Iberian Theories of Empire in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Francisco de Monzón and Martín de Azpilcueta, also known as Doctor Navarrus, were two of the many Spanish intellectuals who moved to Portugal between the 1520s and 1530s. Their relocation was enabled by two factors: the presence of a Castilian queen at the Portuguese court, Catherine of Habsburg, sister of Emperor Charles V, and also the appointment of international scholars as professors and lecturers at the recently reopened University of Coimbra (1537), a result of King John III's attempt to promote academic studies in the kingdom.1 This movement further enriched and diversified Portuguese culture. It also enlivened ongoing debates over Portugal's imperial project and its intersection with religion and war. ... Read More

  • Redefining Reciprocity: Appointment Edicts and Political Thought in
           Medieval China

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: This article explores a relatively new approach to the history of political ideas. To complement previous studies that focus on "canonical" texts and other well-known genres,1 I direct our attention to a much-overlooked corpus in the study of intellectual history: actual paperwork produced by the government, and especially edicts by which the emperor appointed officials. I argue that these functional documents, once critically contextualized, offer unique access to real-time negotiations within the government, a dynamic process that in turn gave rise to sophisticated theories that would otherwise be invisible.I focus on one regime of medieval China, the Tang empire (618–907), and one theoretical problem, that of ... • The Linguistic Terror in France according to Jean Paulhan and Jean-Paul
           Sartre

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The term "linguistic turn" typically suggests a sustained effort to reorient a given discipline around problems of language. Between 1890 and 1950, an array of such turns, forming a "constellation across Europe," strove to investigate "language as such."1 The literary scene of interwar France, however, was less of a "turn" and more of an ever-spinning tourniquet, a turnstile or merry-go-round often propelled by factions pulling away from language.2 The historical and psychological flux of such linguistic attitudes occupied Jean Paulhan, critic and longtime editor of La Nouvelle Revue Française (NRF). His signature pair of terms names the forces at work: Rhetoric (a love or trust for words, roughly speaking) and ... Read More

  • "I am aware that this letter may be offensive": The Unapologetic
Achievements of Ruth Barcan Marcus and Marjorie Glicksman Grene

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Ruth Barcan Marcus and Marjorie Glicksman Grene were not the only American women of their generation who displayed notable philosophical promise or prowess, but they were almost alone among them in attaining professional success outside the faculties of women's colleges. Born during the first quarter of the twentieth century, they navigated a patriarchal professional landscape with few models to emulate and without access to its conventional avenues of advancement. While their accomplishments were, therefore, unique, like all philosophers, they had to master a particular set of "intellectual arts" and develop a "specific sense and kind of self"—what Ian Hunter characterizes as the philosopher's "persona." This ... Read More
