Abstract: The ocean looked the same as ever.When Matthew Fontaine Maury received his sailing orders, he made for the library. Having recently passed his naval examination, he had been appointed sailing master of the sloop-of-war USS Falmouth in 1831, with orders to sail for the Pacific via Cape Horn. Such was the Cape’s notoriety among seamen that Maury decided to take every possible precaution, spending the weeks before the Falmouth’s departure looking for hydrographic records of winds and currents in the area in order to plan his route. Abstract: This book is a theoretical fiction about postmodernism. A theoretical fiction, because I treat discursive ideas and arguments in a way analogous to how a novelist treats characters and events.In Steven Shaviro’s episodic e-text, Doom Patrols, the modus operandi is mimesis, not only as a feature of media to be critiqued but also as a mode of critique in itself, wherein formal attributes of the text mimic the subject matter to explore their conceptual incongruencies. A prime example is the eponymous titles of the essay chapters, each suggesting the focus will be on an actual famous person: “David Cronenberg,” “Bill Gates,” and so on. Abstract: What do sex robots want' The question cuts at least two ways. On the one hand, it is a rhetorical, even satirical provocation that evokes a familiar query—what do women want'—posed by baffled men throughout the twentieth century (from Freud to Mel Gibson), which exposes the almost comical androcentrism of an ontological framework that regards women’s desire as mysteriously opaque.
