From Holocaust (1978) to Chernobyl (2019): can audiovisual face a
traumatic past and a threatened future'
- Abstract: Resumen: A partir de la historia cultural de la repercusión de la serie de TV Holocausto (1978), que redefinió políticas de gobierno e instauró una inédita centralidad del testigo en el campo de la cultura, sacudiendo el modo en que el genocidio judío era hasta entonces percibido, el artículo pretende discutir -por medio de las contribuciones de Annette Wieviorka y Georges Didi-Huberman, entre otros-, en comparación con la serie Chernobyl (2019) y otras producciones cinematográficas, lo que el audiovisual puede hacer ante distintas formas de la violencia de Estado, ante un pasado traumático y un futuro amenazado.Abstract: Retracing the cultural history of the reception of the TV series Holocaust (1978) as it redefined the politics of the State and put the testimony for the first time at the centre of the cultural field, undermining how the Jewish genocide was perceived until then, the article aims at discuss -by the contributions of Annette Wieviorka and Georges Didi Huberman, among others- through a comparison with the HBO series Chernobyl (2019) and other cinematographic productions, what audio-visual is capable of in front of different forms of State violence, of a traumatic past and of a threatened future.

- Abstract: Resumen: Este artículo aborda una lectura de las novelas fantásticas del novelista austriaco Gustav Meyrink (1868-1932), quien, entre los años 1913 y 1927, publicó cinco novelas fantásticas en las que prevalecen varios elementos del ocultismo finisecular, en contraposición al contexto histórico en el que se desenvolvió, compelido por el cientificismo positivista. A partir de estos textos de corte esotérico y expresionista, podemos encontrarnos con una lectura de la modernidad a partir de la influencia de la teosofía y las religiones orientales, así como de otras corrientes espirituales, que muestran las múltiples complejidades de “lo moderno”.Abstract: This article analyses the work of the Austrian novelist Gustav Meyrink (1868-1932), who, between the years 1913 and 1927, published five fantastic novels in which several elements of late Twentieth Century Occultism prevail, in contrast to the historical context in which they were written, compelled by positivist scientism. From these esoteric and expressionist texts, we can build insight into a reading of modernity influenced by theosophy and eastern religions, as well as other spiritual currents, which show the multiple complexities of modernity.

- Abstract: Resumen: Este trabajo aborda El samurái de la Graflex, de Daniel Salinas Basave. El análisis se enfoca en la representación de un personaje histórico de origen japonés: Kingo Nonaka, cuya figura supone la irrupción de una cultura contrastante con las actitudes e ideosincracia del México revolucionario. En Nonaka se concentran elementos que forman la imagen de un Japón en transición hacia la modernidad. Entre la meditación como método para bucear y la soltura con una cámara fotográfica, Salinas Basave sigue a Nonaka en sus andanzas y le permite al lector apreciar detalles de la historia de la primera mitad del siglo XX desde una perspectiva “ajena” a la mexicana, a la vez que construye un espacio para la reflexión sobre la escritura y la memoria.Abstract: This paper deals with El samurái de la Graflex, by Daniel Salinas Basave. The analysis focuses on the representation of a historical character of Japanese origin: Kingo Nonaka, whose figure represents the irruption of a culture that contrasts with the attitudes and ideosyncrasy of revolutionary Mexico. Nonaka concentrates elements that form the image of a Japan in transition towards modernity. Between meditation as a method for diving and fluency with a camera, Salinas Basave follows Nonaka in his wanderings and allows the reader to appreciate details of the history of the first half of the twentieth century from a perspective “alien” to the Mexican one, while building a space for reflection on writing and memory.

los frutos by Jesús Gardea
- Abstract: Resumen: Correspondiente a la última etapa de Jesús Gardea, El biombo y los frutos es una de sus novelas más enigmáticas y desconcertantes. Este artículo examina la relación con la pintura en esta obra bajo la noción de pictorialismo como un fenómeno textual que crea efectos pictóricos en la narración. Particularmente, se analiza el diálogo que se establece entre la pintura y la mirada, donde la narración juega con la experiencia tanto vívida como ilusoria de la representación en la historia. Con ello se propone dilucidar uno de los elementos más sugerentes de la escritura de Gardea manifestado especialmente en esta novela, no sin buscar aportar una mayor comprensión de la última etapa creativa y propuesta estética del autor.Abstract: Belonging to the last stage of Jesús Gardea, El biombo y los frutos is one of his most enigmatic and perplexing novels. This article examines the relationship with painting in this work under the notion of pictorialism as a textual phenomenon that creates pictorial effects in the narrative. In particular, the dialogue between painting and gaze is analyzed, where the narration plays with both the vivid and illusory experience of representation in the story. With this, it sets out to elucidate one of the most suggestive elements of Gardea’s writing, especially manifested in this novel, not without seeking to contribute to a greater understanding of the author’s latest creative stage and aesthetic proposal.

El Sinaloa, by Guillermo Rubio y de Vizcarrondo
- Abstract: Resumen: Luis Manuel Salcido Arispuro, cuyo alias da nombre a la novela El Sinaloa, es un policía con una doble personalidad: agente al servicio del Estado mexicano, que a su vez sirve para los intereses de la mafia del cártel del narcotráfico sinaloense de finales de los años noventa. De la mano de la narración de Guillermo Rubio, el lector se introducirá en el mundo de la mafia, con su impunidad y desparpajo, donde en medio de fiestas, excesos y violencia, descubriremos un personaje carismático, con un hambre insaciable y de una voracidad exacerbada. Ante ello, es válido preguntarnos si es una condición normal de un personaje de su tipo, o si se trata de una maldición de tintes insospechados, así como ancestrales.Abstract: Luis Manuel Salcido Arispuro, whose alias gives its name to the novel El Sinaloa, is a policeman with a dual personality: an agent in the service of the Mexican State, which in turn serves the interests of the Sinaloa drug cartel mafia of the late 1990s. Hand in hand with Guillermo Rubio’s narrative, the reader will be introduced to the world of the mafia, with its impunity and self-confidence, where amid parties, excesses and violence, we will discover a charismatic character, with an insatiable hunger and of an exacerbated voracity. Given this, it is valid to ask ourselves if it is a normal condition of a character of its type, or if it is a curse of unsuspected, as well as ancestral dyes.
Living in Debt. The Narcolepsies of Wasabi by Alan Pauls
- Abstract: Resumen: Este trabajo se propone explorar y analizar el conjunto de elementos formales que conforman el tiempo de Wasabi de Alan Pauls. La deuda, concebida como tópico rector de lo narrado, es nuestro punto de partida. Habría, tematizadas, tres deudas, una de índole extratextual y otras dos de carácter netamente económico: la que el escritor genera al interior de la ficción. Nuestra hipótesis es que las tres deudas, estrechamente vinculadas entre sí, no sólo se pagan ficcionalmente con el hijo engendrado al final del texto (analogía entre arte y vida); tampoco únicamente con la monstruosidad del quiste (nexo entre cuerpo y escritura), sino con tiempo. Las narcolepsias, aquellos trastornos crónicos del sueño son, bien miradas, monedas temporales mediante las cuales la ficción se cobra la deuda que el escritor contrae con ella.Abstract: The aim of this paper is to explore and to analyze the set of formal elements that makes up the time of Wasabi by Alan Pauls. The topic of debt is here understood as our starting point. There are three debts: one extratextual and two purely economic (contracted within fiction). Our hypothesis is that the three debts, linked together, are not only paid fictionally with the child born at the end of the text (analogy between art and life); nor only with the monstrosity of the cyst (link between body and writing), but with time. Narcolepsies, those chronic sleep disorders are, well looked at, temporary coins through which fiction collects the debt that the writer contracts with it.
Reflections on Screenwriting in Mexico: Notes for a History (1965-2013)
- Abstract: Resumen: Las reflexiones sobre la escritura cinematográfica en México constituyen una tradición que no ha sido revisada críticamente. Este artículo recupera textos fundamentales de escritores y profesores mexicanos con el fin de analizar sus intentos de articular dicha práctica. Los textos oscilan entre la poética, el ensayo y el manual didáctico. Un diálogo estimulante surge a partir de entreverar sus ideas en torno a la naturaleza del guión cinematográfico, sus dimensiones narrativas y dramáticas, la especificidad de este tipo de escritura y el proceso creativo. La revisión comienza con El conocimiento cinematográfico y sus problemas (1965) de José Revueltas y culmina con el libro inédito de Beatriz Novaro, El roce de los lenguajes (2013).Abstract: The reflections on screenwriting in Mexico constitute a tradition that has not been critically reviewed. This article recovers fundamental texts of Mexican writers and teachers in order to analyze their attempts to articulate this practice. The texts oscillate between the poetics, the essay and the didactic manual. A stimulating dialogue arises from interweaving their ideas about the nature of the screenplay, its narrative and dramatic dimensions, the specificity of this type of writing and the creative process. The review begins with El conocimiento cinematográfico y sus problemas (1965), written by José Revueltas and ends with the unpublished book by Beatriz Novaro, El roce de los lenguajes (2013).
