Read More

Abstract: In his exemplary article on Pushkin's "Ia pomniu chudnoe mgnoven´e…" ("I remember a wondrous moment…," 1825), Yuri Shcheglov scrutinized its poetics and architectonics—both intertextual, elaborating on Lidiia Ginzburg's analysis of the phraseology of the "school of harmonic precision," and linguo-poetic, elaborating on Roman Jakobson's "poetry of grammar and grammar of poetry" and analyzing the arrangement of formal categories as relevant to the semantic structure of the poetic text.1 Among the poems that contain phraseological, motif, and narrative parallels to Pushkin's elegy, Shcheglov identified two main prototexts: Konstantin Batiushkov's "Vyzdorovlenie" ("Convalescence," 1816 or 1817)2 and Vasilii ... Read More

Read More

Abstract: Aleksandr Pushkin's 1822 narrative poem The Prisoner of the Caucasus (Kavkazskii plennik) not only launched his literary career and changed the face of Russian literature, it also created a long-running shared narrative about the Russian presence in the Caucasus. Oddly, this narrative is largely a tragic one, in which one or both of the characters in a doomed love affair perish. Furthermore, this basic storyline often appears to be implicitly or explicitly critical of Russian society, and in particular Russia's conquest of the Caucasus. And yet the popularity of the "Prisoner" plot continues to the present day, including through two very brutal wars in Chechnya. One of the most recent reinterpretations of the ... Read More

Abstract: The question of Nikolai Gogol's national identity is a stubborn one, arising with his first appearance in print and persisting to the current day. The question had gained urgency following the demise of the Soviet Union, prompting reconsideration from what seemed like every scholarly direction: neo-, anti-, and postcolonial. Yuliya Ilchuk's Nikolai Gogol: Performing Hybrid Identity builds upon the important work of recent scholars such as Edyta Bojanowska, further interrogating the apparent contradictions between the two "sides" of Gogol's colonial identity to arrive at a more radically decolonial understanding of the writer's complex and ambivalent subjectivity. Ilchuk's essential argument moves beyond a rejection ... Read More

Abstract: Contested Russian Tourism is a fascinating and wide-ranging history of the practice of Russian tourism both in Western Europe and the imperial spaces of the Crimea, Georgia, and the North Caucasus. Layton's examination begins with Nikolai Karamzin's paradigmatic 1790 text Letters of a Russian Traveler and concludes with several works from the fin-de-siècle. While there have been several important studies of nineteenth-century Russian travel and travel literature (scholars such as Derek Offord, Sara Dickinson, Katya Hokanson, and Andreas Schönle come to mind), Lay-ton's book is the first to provide a comprehensive overview of the institution of Russian travel alongside some of its key literary representations in ... Abstract: Ilya Vinitsky's study of Count Dmitrii Khvostov manages to be both exceedingly stimulating in the richness of its insights and uncommonly fun to read due both to the compelling findings and to its playful, parodic style. It should be said from the start that this is an important and much-needed book. Although Khvostov had what was, by any measure, a long and famously prolific career, perhaps due to his reputation as a graphomaniac-poet who had more zeal for revising and disseminating his works than actual talent, his significance for Russian Golden Age poetry and culture remains underexplored and underappreciated. Vinitsky's monograph addresses this lacuna beautifully. The book's title—Graf Sardinskii—comes from ... Read More

Abstract: Pushkin's stature within Russian culture makes teachers and publishers of literature—to say nothing of translators—dream of a definitive English edition of his poetry ("definitive" is the word used in such dreams) that will win him the love and acclaim hitherto denied him in the West. His singular role in the creation of the modern Russian literary language, touted in many an editor's introduction, might also seem to require that such an edition rely on the consistent voice of a single translator. The Penguin Book of Russian Poetry, edited by Robert Chandler, Boris Dralyuk, and Irina Mashinski and published in 2015, tried a different approach to certain authors and texts—including multiple translations of Mikhail ... Abstract: Alexander Pushkin's interest in French libertine poetry has attracted the attention of a number of scholars. Yuri Lotman, for example, maintains that in the beginning of his career Pushkin knew French libertine poetry well.1 Further, Andrew Kahn suggests that "the Pushkinian libertine respects no limits."2 According to Igor Pilshchikov, both French libertine ideology and British dandyism played an important role in Pushkin's "artistic and behavioral strategies."3 Similarly, Emily Wang claims that young Pushkin was inspired by "the Voltairean libertine community."4Arguably, Igor Nemirovsky's illuminating study builds on the earlier work of Pushkin scholars. It is a valuable contribution to the rich body of ... Read More
