  • Raman-Enhanced Spectroscopy (RESpect) Probe for Childhood Non-Hodgkin

    • Authors: Melissa Agsalda-Garcia, Tiffany Shieh, Ryan Souza, Natalie Kamada, Nicholas Loi, Robert Oda, Tayro Acosta-Maeda, So Yung Choi, Eunjung Lim, Anupam Misra, Bruce Shiramizu
      Pages: 1 - 7
Abstract: Raman-enhanced spectroscopy (RESpect) probe, which enhances Raman spectroscopy technology through a portable fiber-optic device, characterizes tissues and cells by identifying molecular chemical composition showing distinct differences/similarities for potential tumor markers or diagnosis. In a feasibility study with the ultimate objective to translate the technology to the clinic, a panel of pediatric non-Hodgkin lymphoma tissues and non-malignant specimens had RS analyses compared between standard Raman spectroscopy microscope instrument and RESpect probe. Cryopreserved tissues were mounted on front-coated aluminum mirror slides and analyzed by standard Raman spectroscopy and RESpect probe. Principal Component Analysis revealed similarities between non-Hodgkin lymphoma subtypes but not follicular hyperplasia. Standard Raman spectroscopy and RESpect probe fingerprint comparisons demonstrated comparable primary peaks. Raman spectroscopic fingerprints and peaks of pediatric non-Hodgkin lymphoma subtypes and follicular hyperplasia provided novel avenues to pursue diagnostic approaches and identify potential new therapeutic targets. The information could inform new insights into molecular cellular pathogenesis. Translating Raman spectroscopy technology by using the RESpect probe as a potential point-of-care screening instrument has the potential to change the paradigm of screening for cancer as an initial step to determine when a definitive tissue biopsy would be necessary.

  • Estimation of Out-of-Field Dose Variation using Markus Ionization Chamber

    • Authors: Ahmed M. Abdelaal, Ehab M. Attalla, Wael M. Elshemey
      Pages: 8 - 15
Abstract: Objective: The aim of This work to provide evaluation  for the out-of-field dose with different plan parameters as field size and depth using Markus ionization chamber detector in the measurement that are frequently used in electron and superficial dosimetery, in radiotherapy. Methods: This is carried out through the application of these detector in estimation of the out-of-field dose with important dosimetric parameters such as field size (from 5×5 to 30×30 cm2) and depth (from 1.5 to 30 cm) at energy 6 MV and collimator angle 0° at SSD 100 cm. Results: Results show that, the Markus detector reported an increase in out-of-field dose with field size, depth in almost all measurements. For 6 MV and 0° collimator  angle, the out-of-field dose at field size of 5×5 cm2 (depth of 1.5 cm) is 1.1%  and at field size of  30×30 cm2 (depth of 1.5 cm) is 4.4% . The out-of-field dose for a depth of 1.5 cm (field size of 10×10 cm2) is 2.3% and for a depth of 30 cm (field size of 10×10 cm) is 5.5%. the measured out-of-field dose by Markus detector overestimated in the calculated at different field sizes (2.7% instead of 2.3% at field size of 10×10 cm2 and 5.2% instead of 4.4% at field size of 30×30 cm2) and different depths (2.7% instead of 1.1% at depth of 1.5 cm and 4.1% instead of 3.4% at depth of 30 cm). Analysis: The result reported an increase in mean out-of-field dose with field size, depth, energy and SSD. Markus ionization chamber detector show overestimation of the measured out-of-field dose in the calculated values at all field sizes and depths, this may be attributed to the poor detection of out-of-field dose by TPS.

  • Liver Tissue Regeneration using Nano Silver impregnated Sodium
           Alginate/PVA Composite Nanofibres

    • Authors: Manikandan G, Yuvashree M, Sangeetha A, Bhuvana K P, Sanjay K Nayak
      Pages: 16 - 21
Abstract: Liver regeneration is a highly organized tissue regrowth process and is the most important reaction of the injured liver. The present study endeavors towards the preparation and characterization of nanoporous Sodium Alginate (SA)/ Poly Vinyl Alcohol (PVA) composite, nanofibrous scaffolds coated with silver (Ag) nanoparticles for hepatocellular regeneration.  Chitosan based Silver nanoparticles possess high antibacterial activity has been preferred in the scaffold preparation to improve the antibacterial properties. The structural characterization of Ag Nanoparticles revealed the amorphous nature with an average particle size of 300 nm. Nanofibres (Scaffolds) were prepared by electrospinning SA/PVA solution at a voltage of 18-25 kV and Ag NPs were coated on it for antibacterial activity. Invitro studies denoted the growth of nitro compounds, amides and collagen which are the major constituents of liver tissue.

  • Phraseological Variations in Medical-Pharmaceutical Terminology and its
Applications for English and German into Spanish Translations

    • Authors: Francisco Bautista Becerro
      Pages: 22 - 29
Abstract: One of the main characteristics of medical-pharmaceutical language is its extensive, specific and specialized terminology. In texts of this type, precision and accuracy are key factors, and terminological univocity is sought, even though this is not always feasible. Therefore, it is very common to find phraseological units with term value and even periphrases composed of several words. This phenomenon is common in all fields of expertise and, of course, in colloquial language as well, and it is also relevant in medical-pharmaceutical language and in many cases must be taken into account. The purpose of this publication is to analyse certain situations in which terms from the medical-pharmaceutical field have a different phraseological structure in English or German than in Spanish and some types of cases that we may encounter. We not only study these variations and differences between languages, but also the consequences of a poor translation and the possible strategies to avoid it.

  • Preparation for Eye Lens Dose Assessment at CSTRM-NNEA

    • Authors: Nazaroh Kartubi, Assef Firnando Firmansyah, Pardi Pardi, Caecilia Tuti Budiantari
      Pages: 30 - 37
Abstract: Because of the negative impact of radiation on the eye lens and the changes recommended by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) 103 (2007) from 150 to 20 mSv (2 rem, the Regulation of BAPETEN Head No. 4 (2013) article 56 give the instruction that Monitoring of eye lens dose should be implemented starting from March 13, 2016, more intensive around the eye lens. To prepare eye lens dose assessment, The Center for Safety Technology and Radiation Metrology (CSTRM) - NNEA study the response of TLD-700H against the X-ray: N (80), N (100) and N (120) energies (usually used in the interventional radiology). Goals and objectives of this study were to obtain the response/calibrated TLD-700H which is traceable to the international system (SI) and TLD-700H can be used for an eye lens dose assessment in Indonesia. Twenty-one TLDs were irradiated with seven dosage variations (0.1; 0.5; 1; 5; 10; 15; 20) mSv at the Secondary Standard Dosimetry Laboratory (SSDL) - Jakarta. After being stored for 24 hours, the TLD were read by using TLD-Reader. The Dosimeter Response, R against doses of X-ray were: R(N80) = 34.595x + 0.1262; R² = 0.9986; R(N100) = 24.484x + 1.1357; R² = 0.9993; and R(N120) = 27.908x - 5.1065; R² = 0.9971. R: correlation coefficient, x: doses; These calibration responses can be used for eye lens dose assessment in Indonesia.

  • Dosimetry Study in Head and Neck of Anthropomorphic Phantoms in Computed
           Tomography Scans

    • Authors: Alvaro Mauricio Ladino Gomez, P. C. Santana, A. P. Mourão
      Pages: 38 - 43
Abstract: Objectives: To determine the CT absorbed dose profiles for routine adult scan parameters in adults, using male and female anthropomorphic phantoms. Compare the levels of absorbed dose of the phantoms and perform image quality analysis by making noise percentage measurements on the CT images obtained. Methods: Radiochromic film strips were introduced in the central region of the phantoms for to record the dose profile in head and neck in order to determine the amount of the dose deposited along the central axis of the phantoms. The scans were performedon a 64 - channel CT scanner (General Electric), programmed in helical scaning mode. In addition to the routine acquisition protocol with fixed current value, it was performed other three scans with the voltage of 80, 100 and 120 kV, using automatic exposure control. Results: Absorbed dose values were found between 15.54 to 24.38 mGy on average for anthropomorphic male phantom and values of 13.13 to 21.49 mGy for anthropomorphic female phantom. Noise analysis was performed, finding that all are acceptable diagnostic parameters according to ministerial order 453/98 of the Brazilian Ministry of Health.  The acquisition parameters of CT images were found that deposited on average less doses in the head and neck for both phantoms, maintaining the image quality for diagnosis.

           Violence in Rural Areas

    • Authors: Caio Augusto de Lima, Paula Monikee Rezende Alves, Carla Jaciara Baraúna de Oliveira, Thaísa Rodrigues Nascimento de Oliveira, Katricia Beatriz Barbosa, Henrique Cardoso Marcene, Stefan Vilges de Oliveira
      Pages: 44 - 45
Abstract: It was argued that the coronavirus pandemic is likely to lead to an increase in the occurrence of domestic violence incidents against women, while victims are forced to quarantine at home with potentially abusive family members. In this context, it was found that women living in rural areas are at increased risk. In defining their vulnerability was observed least school years, black race and young age (young women) of raped and abused women. The spouse was also identified as the main aggressor, who practiced physical violence, with recurrence, within the victim's own residence, associated with the abusive use of alcoholic beverages. It has alerted the world to this problem and called attention to the need to promote strategies to protect women. It is known that women and men experience pandemics in different ways and those circumstances, in addition to strengthening situations of women's vulnerability, tend to aggravate family tensions, especially in families with a history of recurrent domestic violence.
