  • Strategies to Reduce Radiation Exposure in Electrophysiology and
           Interventional Cardiology

    • Authors: mehul
Abstract: Ionizing radiation is a workplace hazard that goes undetected. In the cardiac catheterization laboratory, where various interventional and electrophysiological procedures are done, physicians and other staff are exposed to ionizing radiation daily. The amount of radiation exposure in the catheterization laboratory is exponentially more compared to other departments using X-ray and fluoroscopy, which increases even more in complex cases. Staff are at a higher lifetime risk of various medical conditions, ranging from cataracts to malignancies.

  • Artificial Intelligence in Cardiac Imaging

    • Authors: mehul
Abstract: Numerous advances in cardiovascular imaging technology paralleled by the simultaneous growth in wearable technology, mobile health devices, and electronic medical record integration have encouraged increasingly complex and large multi-dimensional data acquisition.1 The influx of data with each scan is exponentially rising in all cardiovascular imaging modalities and will exceed the capabilities of current statistical software.2

  • Single-Ventricle Physiology

    • Authors: mehul
Abstract: As we approach 50 years since the original publication describing the Fontan procedure for palliation of single-ventricle congenital heart disease, we review the basics of Fontan circulation, and the current literature concerning long-term complications. Surgical interventions have allowed children with former lethal defects to survive into adulthood and we recognize that this has led to a new cohort.

  • Between a Rock and a Hard Place: How to Use Antithrombotics in Patients
           Undergoing Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement

    • Authors: mehul
Abstract: Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has become the preferred method for management of severe aortic stenosis in patients who are at high and intermediate surgical risk. Short-term data have been presented from two studies comparing TAVR versus surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) in low surgical risk patients. The Placement of Aortic Transcatheter Valves 3 (PARTNER 3) trial compared TAVR using a balloon expandable valve with standard SAVR. The primary endpoint was a composite of all-cause mortality, stroke, or re-hospitalization at 1 year post-procedure.

  • Baroreflex Activation Therapy for Resistant Hypertension and Heart Failure

    • Authors: mehul
Abstract: Hypertension is an important contributor to global morbidity and mortality and is a major burden on healthcare systems.1,2 More than 20% of the world’s population has high blood pressure when defined by conventional criteria: systolic blood pressure ≥140 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure ≥90 mmHg.3,4 Even with therapeutic lifestyle and pharmacological measures, blood pressure remains poorly controlled in a significant proportion of these people.

    • Authors: mehul
Abstract: Type 2 diabetes is a major risk factor for the development of heart disease.1 At the beginning of the last century, or even before, several authors described a possible association between diabetes and heart failure (HF).2 However, according to the Heart Failure Association of the European Society of Cardiology guideline for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and HF, the first report of this association, excluding other risk factors, was published in 1954.

  • Diagnosis and Therapy of Cardiac Sarcoidosis: A Clinical Perspective

    • Authors: mehul
Abstract: Although less common than other forms of cardiomyopathy, cardiac sarcoidosis (CS), both as part of a systemic process and in its isolated form, is an important, and increasingly recognized disorder. This is felt to be due, in part, to advances in cardiac imaging and heightened awareness of the disorder.1,2 CS is associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality, including sudden cardiac death. The early recognition of CS and prompt initiation of treatment is of the utmost importance.

  • Transcatheter Edge-to-edge Repair of Severe Tricuspid Regurgitation

    • Authors: mehul
Abstract: Moderate-to-severe tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is estimated to affect more than 1.6 million people in the US. However, fewer than 8,000 tricuspid valve operations are performed each year.1,2 There is clearly an unmet need for a tricuspid valve (TV) intervention. There has been rapid development in the field of transcatheter aortic and mitral valve interventions and percutaneous management of tricuspid valve disease has also evolved substantially in recent years.

  • Value of MitraClip in Reducing Functional Mitral Regurgitation

    • Authors: mehul
Abstract: The field of mitral valve disease diagnosis and management is in constant change. New understanding of disease pathology and progression, with improvements in and increased use of sophisticated imaging modalities have led to more complex treatments. Transcatheter mitral valve repair with a MitraClip device is resulting in good outcomes in patients with primary mitral regurgitation who are at high surgical risk.1

  • Conduction Abnormalities After Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement

Abstract: Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has been established as a therapeutic option for patients with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis who are considered to be of intermediate, high or prohibitive surgical risk.1–5 As a result of favorable TAVR outcomes and substantial improvements in transcatheter heart valve (THV) technologies and implantation techniques, the feasibility of broadening applications to the low-risk population is being evaluated.

  • Role of Drug-coated Balloons in Small-vessel Coronary Artery Disease

    • Authors: mehul
Abstract: Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) of small-vessel coronary artery disease (SVD) is challenging because of difficulties with equipment delivery and high restenosis rates. Drug-coated balloons (DCBs) are an attractive emerging PCI option for patients with SVD.Small-vessel coronary artery disease
