  • ChatGPT: high-tech plagiarism awaits academic publishing green light.
Non-fungible token (NFT) can be a way out

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Zahra Mohammadzadeh, Marcel Ausloos, Hamid Reza Saeidnia
Abstract: ChatGPT from OpenAI is an amazing example of machine learning technology. This technology has now become an important issue for high-tech plagiarism concern. Indeed, there are many concerns about using this tool, perhaps using other technologies to make ChatGPT safer. Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) may be a way out. This paper aims to discuss such an alternative. To preventing with high-tech plagiarism created by the ChatGPT tool two ways can help schools, universities and scientific centers to prevent academic plagiarism: first, by banning ChatGPT and adjusting teaching styles, and second, by using detecting AI-produced content. In this viewpoint, the authors suggest a third way that can be a way out. NFTs technology has the ability to add a non-fungibility feature to any digital object (image, text or video). Therefore, any text produced by artificial intelligence tools can be given a specific NFT code. With this work, the authors add a feature to texts produced by artificial intelligence, that is, the non-fungibility feature. In this viewpoint, how and why NFTs may be a usefully added value in preventing acts of high-tech plagiarism on ChatGPT is discussed.

  • Establishing community and school libraries: African Library Project
           experience

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Joel Nakitare, Meave Ombima, Irene Achayo
Abstract: This paper aims to disseminate the lessons learned from the African Library Project (ALP), which has worked in collaboration with more than 1,500 partners to stock 3,762 community and school libraries in 13 African countries with more than 3,883,082 books. Hopefully, these lessons will help other decision-makers and practitioners in different contexts. The study is based on the authors’ implementation experience and secondary data the project has collected since its commencement. The paper identified the following best practices that other organizations can adopt to enhance or establish additional school and community libraries: the application and book-receiving process, using collaboration, partnerships and volunteerism to mobilize resources are just a few best practices that have been highlighted. Use of student and teacher librarians in the absence of professional librarians, as well as materials and forums for increasing capacity among teachers and community librarians. Other stakeholders in developing countries can replicate the ALP best practices to set up and run school and community libraries. Although many individuals and organizations are involved in promoting literacy activities, no particular framework guides the process. This paper summarizes ALP best practices that can inform a framework that can guide the practice.

  • Some observations on generative text artificial intelligence’s
           impact on libraries part 2

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Peter Fernandez
Abstract: The purpose of this study is to provide a series of observations to help information professionals understand and anticipate the future developments. This column delves into artificial intelligence (AI)-powered search and its implications for the open Web to show how multifaceted the impact of generative text AI might be in a single arena. This framework includes the following observations: future applications are unpredictable, interdependent and will require flexibility, AI’s ability to create the feeling of intelligence combined with the power of language are key to its future; the technology is not neutral, it has biases and significant limitations; its widespread adoption will come with trade-offs that matter; and that libraries should develop a positive vision for how to use it. For libraries to serve their patrons or embody their values, they must be prepared to grapple with a rapidly evolving technology by understanding the technologies possibilities, what makes it compelling, as well as its limitations and dangers.

  • Access to full-text documents in libraries via Sci-Hub: a blessing in
           disguise to library users

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Yusuf Ayodeji Ajani, Adeyinka Tella, Samuel Okere
Abstract: The main purpose of this paper is to explore access to full-text documents in libraries through Sci-Hub and consider whether it is a blessing in disguise to library users. Sci-Hub has been a valuable resource for accessing full-text documents. Sci-Hub is potentially problematic from a legal standpoint but has provided a “blessing in disguise” to library users who lack access to academic resources. Sci-Hub has gained significant popularity among scholars and researchers; it has democratized access to academic research. The ability to access scholarly publications for free has provided an important avenue for research and has allowed for greater efficiency and effectiveness in research projects. The legality of the service, concerns about the quality and accountability of the available materials, and the unclear long-term sustainability of the service are some of the challenges associated with using Sci-Hub in libraries. This paper highlights how the Sci-Hub improves access to full-text scholarly publications for library users. The blessings and challenges associated with using Sci-Hub in libraries and recommendations are discussed.

  • How to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) into your library workflow

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Paul R. Pival
Abstract: This paper aims to highlight the recent developments in artificially intelligent chatbots and how the resulting tools can be incorporated into the daily workflow of library work. Recent literature is examined, parallels to librarian reactions to the birth of the original internet search engines are drawn and suggestions for the use of specific tools for specific tasks are given. Although effectively less than 6 months old, the field of artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots is already fulsome enough to be able to be usefully incorporated into the profession. More tools are imminent, though each of them does and will continue to have shortcomings of which informational professionals need to be aware. This paper provides practical suggestions and specific tools to incorporate into the workflow of different library specialties, along with important caveats for quality and bias. The public has adopted the use of AI chatbots faster than any previously introduced technology. Librarians have a history of moving more slowly when it comes to the core values of the profession, such as information searching. It is vital for information professionals, such as librarians, to understand both the value and the pitfalls of these tools to be able to work with patrons and stay relevant in the eyes of the public and institutional funders. This paper fills a need for practical advice in using AI to perform daily library work.

  • Wikipedia and large language models: perfect pairing or perfect storm'

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Paul A. Thomas
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to explore the potential benefits and challenges of using large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT to edit Wikipedia. The first portion of this paper provides background about Wikipedia and LLMs, explicating briefly how each works. The paper's second section then explores both the ways that LLMs can be used to make Wikipedia a stronger site and the challenges that these technologies pose to Wikipedia editors. The paper's final section explores the implications for information professionals. This paper argues that LLMs can be used to proofread Wikipedia articles, outline potential articles and generate usable Wikitext. The pitfalls include the technology's potential to generate text that is plagiarized or violates copyright, its tendency to produce “original research” and its tendency to generate incorrect or biased information. While there has been limited discussion among Wikipedia editors about the use of LLMs when editing the site, hardly any scholarship has been given to how these models can impact Wikipedia's development and quality. This paper thus aims to fill this gap in knowledge by examining both the potential benefits and pitfalls of using LLMs on Wikipedia.

  • Citation Gecko technology for research and entrepreneurship

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Varun Gupta
Abstract: This study aims to investigate how Citation Gecko technology might help libraries provide better research support services. The paper explains specifically how Citation Gecko can help libraries provide more precise and thorough references, save time and enable methodical literature reviews and scoping studies amid the constantly evolving nature of research domains. The paper also considers how businesses and libraries can gain from implementing the technology. The paper’s conceptual study of the function of librarians in assisting researchers – particularly in the setting of exhaustive literature reviews and scoping studies – forms the foundation of the piece. The authors talk about the difficulties in guaranteeing the authenticity and comprehensiveness of the literature review process and the significance of adopting tools like Citation Gecko to help with this process. The possible adoption of Citation Gecko in libraries is also forecasted using the technological adoption model paradigm. Libraries that use Citation Gecko technology provide better research support services by providing accurate and comprehensive references, saving time and assisting systematic literature surveys and scoping studies. The tool is simple to use and does not require professional training due to its user-friendly interface and ability to produce references fast. Using Citation Gecko technology can enhance libraries’ capacities to support researchers, faculty and students in their research projects by making a significant contribution to systematic surveys and referencing efforts. This study adds to the continuing discussion about how libraries may use technology to improve the services they provide to users who need research support. It had never been looked into how citation Gecko might help libraries with their reference and systematic review study offerings.

  • Impact of artificial intelligence text generators (AITGs) on libraries

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Saba Inamdar
Abstract: The purpose of studying the impact of artificial intelligence text generators (AITGs) on libraries is to examine the effect of AITGs on the library landscape, including the services offered, the resources provided and the roles of library staff. The current study examined how AITGs impact libraries. The researcher was able to comprehend the problem by critically analyzing and reviewing the pertinent published works, such as books, journals and articles. This study concludes AITGs can assist libraries in streamlining operations, enhancing services and making collections more accessible. It is vital to highlight that AITGs are not intended to dissuade its users from visiting physical libraries or to replace them with virtual ones. Instead, they are a tool that can improve and supplement the services and resources provided by virtual libraries. The study’s observations add to the corpus of information on AITGs in libraries and help users comprehend their technological foundations. Further empirical research is recommended on the effects of AITGs and their impact on libraries.

Authors: Nove E. Variant Anna, Dessy Harisanty, Noraini Ismail
Abstract: This paper aims to explore the existence of Metaverse or 3D virtual libraries and how they use Metaverse to expand library services. The authors use literature to search projects and research papers that discuss the metaverse library. They also did observations on metaverse libraries. There are some virtual realities or metaverse platforms that a library or virtual community can use to build their 3D virtual world. Some libraries already create a virtual world library or metaverse library. However, those initiatives are still in the prototype stage and are used for exhibitions and projects. This paper overviews and builds a simple understanding of the metaverse library. The value of the paper is giving motivation when building the metaverse library. This initiative shows that big hi-tech companies do not dominate Metaverse.

Authors: Pauline Nicholas, Alicia Palmer, Yulande Lindsay, Kareen Lawrence, Vergie Lee Reid Lawson
Abstract: Driven by globalization and subsequent advancements in technology, higher education has experienced exponential growth in student enrolment and increased diversity in the student population. Among the major changes are new models of learning that have supported both onsite and remote learners for quality education. In response to these major changes in education, the processes, resources and services in library and information science have been redefined to meet the information needs of all users, anytime and anywhere. Historically, libraries shifted from being curators of knowledge to creators and disseminators of knowledge. This paper aims to address the path forward for academic libraries using as example, the Main Library at The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus (UWI). This paper explores the evolution of reference services, circulations, digitization, people engagement and how new technologies have fundamentally changed the way librarians at The UWI work. Of equal importance in this discussion of the future of academic libraries is students' ability to navigate the diverse ways in which they access resources and services. Finally, the interests, needs and the practical implications of artificial intelligence in academic libraries will be examined. This digital disruption poses both opportunities and challenges for academic libraries and students within the Caribbean in the 21st Century and beyond. A review of literature as well as a look at trends in academic libraries forms the basis of this discussion. Library processes and services advanced from automation in the 1980s, internet and online facilities in the 1990s to web-based and consortia offerings in the 2000s rendering old models obsolete. Information products and the process of information sharing have reduced the focus on print collections and face to face interactions to fully online or hybrid offerings. What is evident is that Caribbean Libraries must continue to evolve or risk being left behind in this burgeoning technology age. Often the Caribbean is overlooked when examining the impact and application of technology and the availability of resources to students and the wider society. This paper presents an opportunity to look at the unique status of Caribbean academic libraries, specifically The University of the West Indies Library System.

      Authors: Kate-Riin Kont
Abstract: This paper aims to investigate cyber security awareness of the staff of Estonian libraries and gives an overview why libraries could be a target of cyber attacks and why librarians need cyber security at first place. The data used in this paper is based on a review of relevant literature to provide an overview of the concept of cyber security, and the results of the original online survey created by the paper’s author, conducted among Estonian librarians. The online questionnaire was developed using the world-recognised human aspects of information security questionnaire (HAIS-Q), which is based on the knowledge-attitudes-behaviour (KAB) methodology. A total of 388 completed questionnaires were returned from employees of academic, specialised, public and school libraries. The results are interpreted on the basis of descriptive statistics and Kruger and Kearney approach. The final score of library employees is 86, which is classified as good, but based on the result, two focus areas need more attention than previously, which are the use of devices and prevention and handling of incidents. The cyber behaviour of library employees has not been widely studied in the world using HAIS-Q and KAB models, and to the best of the authors’ knowledge, no research has been previously carried out in the Estonian library context into cyber security awareness.

Authors: Solomon Olusegun Oyetola, Nurudeen Adeniyi Aderibigbe, Bolaji David Oladokun
Abstract: Academic libraries may become obsolete in the twenty-first century unless they begin to harness new technology and improve information and service delivery. This paper aims to examine the emergence of social media technologies (SMTs) with their implications to academic library services in developing countries in the world. It is believed that a growing number of libraries of all types are starting to use SMTs to enhance their service delivery, similar to other institutions. The research, which was conducted on a desk, examined how the implementation of SMTs may affect library services and operations. The study emphasizes that many academic libraries in developing countries have not yet adopted and implemented SMTs despite the potential that they hold for libraries. Given that there has been relatively little study linking SMTs to librarianship, this may be because there is a low degree of awareness of SMTs’ importance in libraries. This study discovered that there are other types of SMTs relevant to academic libraries including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Blog among others. This paper reported the implications of SMTs to library services in developing countries. This study is the original idea from the authors and does not reflect on any copyrighted materials. The study recommended among others that sufficient training and more expertise need to be gained by academic libraries to further facilitate implementation of social networks in the libraries, and adoption of contemporary media technologies such as social media in meeting the needs of the 21st-century library patrons should be prioritized.

      Authors: Sanjay Kumar Jha
Abstract: As information providers, libraries select, acquire, process, store, preserve and distribute information resources to customers. Innovative technologies like the blockchain have posed major challenges to education and library services. The main goal of the application of blockchain technology (BT) in libraries and information centers is to give all possible users in participating library systems unrestricted access to digital content and print collections while minimizing risk to protect each user’s privacy and identification. A fresh and dependable technology called blockchain aids in the security, reliability and preservation of information. The 21st century’s change agents’ libraries are implementing new technologies to deliver the most knowledge possible in the shortest amount of time. It cannot be overstated how this technology has the potential to transform library services, operations and functions. An extensive review of literature on “smart libraries” was carried to ascertain the emerging technologies in the smart library domain. Literature was searched against various keywords like smart libraries, smart technologies, Internet of Things, electronic resource management, data mining, artificial intelligence, ambient intelligence, BT and augmented reality. Later on, the works citing the literature on smart libraries were also explored to visualize a broad spectrum of emerging concepts about this growing trend in libraries. Blockchain is one of the rapidly expanding and evolving technology. Librarians and library need to understand the opportunities, benefits and risks of blockchain. Perhaps in libraries, BT will become a useful tool for storing, storing and sharing information. This technology also aids in the acquisition of library materials that can improve collection maintenance. Blockchain can protect user and patron records and enhance the privacy of user and research data. This technology also improves collaboration among library patrons and staff. BT is increasingly being adopted by libraries in various ways. It creates an improved metadata system to protect digital-first selling rights, peer-to-peer sharing and more. Apart from what have been already discussed, this technology is perfect for academia and perfect for achieving potential pace in libraries. It can be used to safeguard library user records, retrieve libraries document and improve collection management. A special bulk request enables identification and discovery of unique holdings. Scientific writing is another good use case for blockchain, where researchers can record and time-stamp ideas and spread information. BT presents a significant opportunity for libraries to enhance user privacy, enhance collaboration and transform the manner in which libraries and communities collaborate. The University of San Jose in Toronto, the Reference Library, the Suffolk Collaborative Library System and many other libraries are exploring this technology, and various other libraries are set to follow suit. The paper tries to highlight the usage of blockchain technologies in the libraries and information center setups for the efficient working of library setups. Blockchain is one of the emerging technologies that have the potential to bring the technology revolution.
