      Authors: Neil Ellis
Abstract: Organizations Can Mitigate Incidents and Accelerate Time to Resolution by Taking These Four StepsAs conditions normalize from the pandemic, incident managers face mounting pressure to reassess their response plans and increase resiliency. This expectation can be difficult to manage against business priorities for growth and operational stability, which often add complexity to resiliency issues....

  • How The Cloud Could Neutralize Ransomware

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Russ Kennedy
Abstract: The top cybersecurity challenge facing enterprises these days is ransomware. It is relatively cheap and easy to infest corporate environments. It generates millions in returns for the hackers, often leaving the target with a tarnished reputation and diminished revenues for a significant period of time. This might be about to change. As data infrastructure continues to evolve, we may be on the cusp of a new era in the struggle against ransomware - one in which the good guys have gained a number of powerfUl defensive tools. While it is unlikely ransomware will ever be fully neutralized, technology trends are moving in a direction which will make it much more difficult to carry out and much less profitable for the attacker....

  • Impacts Of Climate Change On Tropical Systems And Risk Mitigation

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Don Shelly
Abstract: Severe weather is not a new phenomenon. The U.S. has a long history of dealing with extreme weather events such as hurricanes, tornados, and floods. However, as our climate changes, our tropical system changes with it, intensifying the impacts of hurricanes and other severe weather events. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) states there has been an increase in the proportion of hurricanes which reach Category 4 or 5 and an increase in rapidly intensifying hurricanes since the 1980s.As our tropical systems are impacted by climate change, businesses and organizations need to change their emergency response plans accordingly. Changing weather risk profiles might make tried-and- true mitigation actions less effective than they once were, force businesses to begin preparations earlier than they have in the past, and spawn even the most unlikely and improbable weather events....

  • How SDS Enables Three Lines Of Defense For Data Survivability

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Dave Brown
Abstract: With the state of the world today, the vivid image of above may become an unfortunate reality. Having more than one way to keep your data and business in existence should be front of mind for a business continuity/ disaster recovery (BC/DR) planner. If there are affordable ways for avoidance versus recovery, why not use them' The abstraction from hardware by software- defined storage (SDS) provides multiple techniques to allow for your data and your business’s survivability....

  • Preparing For A BIA

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Michael Herrera; Richard Long
Abstract: So, you’ve convinced management to let you conduct a BIA. Congratulations! However, if you are tempted to immediately jump in and start setting up interviews, I hope you will hold on for a moment.A proper business impact analysis requires preparation. You wouldn’t jump into a body of water without changing into swim trunks - or at least taking everything out of your pockets - and similar measures are required before you start on a BIA. Preparing for a BIA is critical to its success....

           Future Of Business Resiliency

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Samson Williams
Abstract: One of my favorite parables is the “Six Blind Men and the Elephant.” It is originally from India, with one of the earliest versions of the story appearing in the Buddhist text, Tittha Sutta around 500 BCE. But it’s a good story and so likely predates even this telling. The importance of this parable of the blind men and elephant is it lays down the basis for discussing the limits of perception and the importance of context. The parable generally goes:...

  • The Ties Between Business Continuity And Classic Rock

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Craig McKesson
Abstract: Mission-Critical Applications Correlate With a Strong Safety ProgramSafety is related to business continuity, but this connection may not be apparent from the outside. To understand the relationship between safety and uptime, can we find the answers in Van Halen' Facility management and data hall operators often boast about their safety record, and for good reason. Proper attention to safety measures means fewer injuries in the workplace. But what should a strong safety record mean externally' For clients looking for facility management, they are looking for reliable performance for their mission-critical applications. As long as uptime is prioritized, why should safety matter' After all, they are outsourcing their operations to make sure data is available and networks are secure, not to make sure employees of some other company are wearing their PPE. If IT equipment is running at peak performance, why should one care if their safety program may not be industry-leading' In this view safety seems like an afterthought, a tertiary consideration at best....
