  • Communication Practice Trends in Asia-Pacific: Focus on New Technologies,
but Concerns about Trust and Ethics

    • Authors: Jim Macnamara, May Lwin, Chun-ju Flora Hung-Baesecke, Ansgar Zerfass
      Pages: 1 - 13
Abstract: Beyond some unsurprising findings, such as increasing use of social media for communication management and public relations, the 2020/21 Asia-Pacific edition of the global Communication Monitor found that practitioners in the region are giving increased focus to the use of ‘big data’ and artificial intelligence such as bots and algorithms, but many harbor concerns about ethics in these practices and maintaining trust. The survey across 15 Asia-Pacific countries and territories shows that practitioners are coming to grips with social media and day-to-day digital technology, but 75% see the use of bots, algorithms, and big data analytics as emerging issues. Building and maintaining public trust while using such technologies has become the third highest rated strategic issue, after being ranked seventh in 2017. Concerningly, however, almost one-third of communication professionals in Asia-Pacific have never participated in ethics training and many reported a lack of IT skills, which pose challenges in implementing ethical and socially responsible practice. The findings offer a contribution to practical theory in place of normative theories and, operationally, the findings indicate a need for increased professional development by employers, professional organizations, and educators, and potentially an updating of codes of practice and codes of ethics.

  • Rethinking Capitalism in the Age of digitalization: Analysis on the Basis
           of Digital Labor Theory

    • Authors: Heqing Huang
      Pages: 14 - 20
Abstract: This article discusses the changes of capitalism in the era of digitalization, including factors of production, digital markets, capital forms, and the scope of capital exploitation, arguing that despite the specificity of digital commodities, companies dealing with such products have managed to gain control of the market, they have done so on the basis of the exploitation of human labor. The core forces of capitalist exploitation, commodification, and inequality, rather than being mitigated, are growing and accelerating in the development of a networked and digital political economy, concluding that digitalization is an extension of capitalist hegemony.

      Pages: 21 - 32
Abstract: The objective of this research is to explore the relationship among the source characteristics of an online influencer, consumers’ attitude and their purchase decision for L’Oréal brand. Abstract: Facebook addiction causes different health-related problems like insomnia, loneliness, frustration, headache, wrist pain, eye pain, blurred eyes, and laziness. This study aims to assess the effects of Facebook use on the students’ physical and mental health at the University of Chittagong, Bangladesh. An institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted among the students (N = 385) of 21 departments from seven faculties of the university. Data were collected using a structured and self-administered questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and chi-square (χ2) analyses were performed. This study revealed that more than half of the students (54.8%) use Facebook on average for more than two hours daily. Other findings include: 49.9% of students became angry when interrupted in using Facebook, 55.1% had a headache problem, 62.1% of them have an eye pain problem, 50.0% of respondents suffered from blurred eyes, 50.1% users had insomnia problems, and they could not wake up early in the morning. Most of them reported that sometimes mealtime passed while using Facebook, and they became excited when they see something unexpected content on Facebook. Moreover, the respondents who used Facebook for more than two hours were more likely (p < .05) to suffer from different physical and mental health problems. • I am Don Quixote the Trio Likay: A Soul-searching Content within Thai
           Popular Performance

    • Authors: Sukanya Sompiboon
      Pages: 45 - 53
Abstract: This article mainly focuses on the recent production of Anatta Theatre Troupe, named “I am Don Quixote the Trio Likay,” which presented in Bangkok Theatre Festival 2019. The performance exhibited the combination of social themes and entertaining images belong to both Don Quixote of La Mancha and likay form as a reconstruction of popular theatre. The story is about a broke business man who assumes himself as a world-renowned knight, Don Quixote of La Mancha, in likay style. He makes the great efforts in promoting justice and equality for underprivileged people in Thai society. The production demonstrates a confidence in presenting identity of popular theatre and challenging Thai socio-cultural formation of popular status. The result demonstrates that sophisticated messages, such as soul-searching, social critique and satire, humanity and equality can, in an apparently paradoxical manner, be conveyed through likay-style performance. “I am Don Quixote the Trio Likay”, therefore, enables to hybrid the theatrical practice between tradition-popular based and contemporary theatre in Thailand.
