  Abstract: This paper proposes the idea of “information integrity,” conceptualized as a multidimensional strategy to bring together groups entangled in polarizing discourses and vested interests. The paper employs a threefold analytical approach, examining the “macro-mezzo-micro” levels to explore the social interests at each level. Furthermore, it argues that adopting a normative ideal of seeking social solidarity and informed citizenship necessitates changes from within the communications system itself. Such a task requires clarifying the gaps in the current system of knowledge production and proposing actions led by the media corporations themselves and by socially responsible professionals who want to play an active role in addressing society’s grand challenges.

The Role of Video Content in The New York Times and The Guardian’s
Coverage of the Israeli War on Gaza

  Abstract: The Israel-Hamas conflict has received widespread coverage from global media sources. The coverage has been extensive, including both conventional news channels and social media platforms, and includes a vast range of opinions and tales. Social media has substantially impacted the dissemination of knowledge, as seen by platforms such as TikTok, which have accumulated billions of views on material relating to this topic. The research revealed a significant discrepancy in the number of postings supporting Palestine compared to those supporting Israel. The battle has resulted in the dissemination of deceptive information and misinformation. Hamas has been prohibited from the majority of social media networks; however, its propaganda continues to flow on channels like Telegram. Local content artists in Gaza recorded their experiences and garnered substantial followings. The study investigates the utilization of video material by newspapers, with a specific emphasis on four key aspects: the characteristics of the content, the intended audience, video editing techniques, and the influence of this content on worldwide public perception. Video coverage in the New York Times strives to provide a fair and equitable portrayal of the Israeli and Palestinian perspectives, including conflicts and fatalities from all sides. The newspaper’s objective is to provide extensive coverage that emphasizes the plight of both parties, however, it has faced criticism for not sufficiently illuminating the agony endured by the Palestinians.

Quality of Investigative Journalism in Lithuania: Analysis of Research by
Public Broadcaster LRT and News Portal 15min

  Abstract: The article formulates criteria for the quality of investigative journalism based on the literature analysis, which are used to assess and compare the quality of investigations conducted in 2022 and 2023 by two traditional Lithuanian media outlets – the public broadcaster LRT and the commercial news portal 15min. The author reveals a journalistic view of the quality of research, showing similarities and differences in approaches; having assessed five studies in both media outlets and the responses of journalists, she emphasizes that some investigations lack an objective balance of sources, and the investigations do not always meet high standards and methods.

Journalism – a High-Risk Profession' The Impact of Politics on the
Employment Security of Journalists in Poland in 2015–2023

  Abstract: Raising questions about how risky it was (and still is) to practice journalism in Poland, author Magdalena Mateja examines cases from 2015 to 2023, when the Polish government not only regulated the public broadcaster TVP, but also interfered in the management of national commercial television and radio stations. During this period, journalists who did not please the authorities were fired from various media outlets. Among other things, the author concludes that in 2023, after the change of government, the situation of journalists did not improve either in the public broadcaster or in the media market as a whole.

Two Myths about “The Voices”: Experiences of Radio Free
Europe/Radio Liberty

  Abstract: The article explores the role of international radio broadcasting, with a specific focus on Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), throughout the Cold War era, particularly in Lithuania and the broader Eastern Bloc context. It analyses the influence of these broadcasts, known as “the Voices,” in countering Soviet propaganda and disseminating alternative news to populations living behind the Iron Curtain. The study highlights two crucial aspects, which the author argues attained near-mythical significance: the messengers (i.e., broadcasters) and the content of their messages. Despite Soviet propaganda’s allegations depicting RFE/RL personnel as detached émigrés, as agents of Western intelligence agencies or as former collaborators with Nazis, the text asserts that RFE/RL maintained journalistic autonomy. The Soviet strategy of jamming international broadcasts was complemented by a myth alleging that during the guerrilla struggle for Lithuanian independence at the onset of Soviet occupation, international broadcasters purposefully exacerbated tensions and disseminated unfounded or even false promises of Western assistance. The article rebuts these claims, noting the absence of international broadcasting in Lithuanian during that period. Drawing from recently disclosed documents from the KGB archives, the article demonstrates that despite censorship and efforts to manipulate information, Western broadcasts continued to shape public opinion and reinforce aspirations for independence and democracy in regions under Soviet control.
