Authors: Joseph Aversa, Evan Cleave, Jenna Jacobson, Tony Hernandez, Stephanie Dizonno, Michael Macdonald
Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
With Canada becoming the first G20 country to legalize the recreational use of cannabis, there has been increasing interest in the emergence of this new marketplace. Newspaper framing helps to shape public opinion on legalization and news sources play a role in determining how the public perceives the use of cannabis. This research analyzes how mainstream newspapers reported on the legalization of recreational cannabis in Canada in the years before and after legalization (between 2016 and 2019). Using a content analysis of 1,390 cannabis-related articles, 11 dominant reporting themes are identified. Over time, there was a shift from negative and sensationalist cannabis news coverage toward more balanced and progressive framing. The findings identify the influence of editorial political stance on thematic coverage.

Authors: Mohamed Ben Moussa, Aziz Douai, Mehmet Yalcin Parmaksiz
Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
This study examines Turkish online news media coverage of the COVID-19 outbreak in the country. It explores media framing narratives, particularly how they reflected and promoted elite polarization or consensus in the COVID-19 debate. The findings shed light on Turkish political power dynamics during the first stage in the national response to the pandemic. The study highlights the calculations of political partisans who are keen on building a fragile consensus in an increasingly polarized society.

Authors: Noah Buntain, Carol M. Liebler, Kyle Webster
Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
The purpose of this research is twofold. Study I assesses content analyses of news (2015–2020) that sampled from databases to see which are used most frequently and to observe how researchers justify and contextualize their database choices. Results indicate that Nexis Uni is the database most commonly employed, and that researchers rarely justify their choice or include mention of database limitations. Next, Study II compares Factiva, Google News, NewsBank, Nexis Uni and ProQuest, finding considerable differences in number of stories, geographic reach, media type and coverage of a specific news event.

      Authors: Melissa Greene-Blye, Teri Finneman
Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
This study examines how three Native women politicians were portrayed in Native newspapers. The analysis found striking differences in how national Native media cover women politicians compared with prior findings in mainstream newspapers. The data illustrate the influence of Indigenous standpoint theory on the journalistic norms of Native media and its distinct lack of gendered politics, revealing significant prioritization of policy over personal and contrasts in the coverage amount and tone for conservative women politicians.

Authors: Jessica Fargen Walsh, Mildred Perreault

Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
This article examines how 22 Nebraska newspapers and a wire service covered nitrate contamination in Nebraska’s groundwater over nearly 4 years. We found coverage lacked depth and examined a few solutions although 88% of Nebraskans get drinking water from the ground. Reliance on fertilizer and irrigation for crop production leads to groundwater contamination, making this a concerning coverage gap as climate change impacts promise to make farming more challenging and increase environmental risks.

  • #BREAKING local news: Twitter use in a large media market

Authors: Frank M. Russell, Miguel Hernandez, Korryn Sanchez
      First page: 71
Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
This study concerns Twitter use in a large local news market. Nonprofit newsrooms and a regional newspaper used replies to engage in reciprocal exchanges with audiences, but broadcasters used retweets, hashtags, and mentions for branding. News media differed in attention to news topics valued by audiences, with resource-constrained local newspapers overemphasizing sports. Attention to weather and crime were predictors of audience sharing of tweets, but sports posts were less likely to be liked or retweeted.

           the COVID-19 pandemic

      Authors: Elina Erzikova, Wilson Lowrey

Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the role news organizations play in disseminating information and shaping public response to the crisis. This study adopts an ecological approach in examining Russian regional journalists’ adaptations to the pandemic. Based on in-depth interviews, the study found that a worsened economic situation has increased dependence on state subsidies. Journalists avoided questioning authorities’ response to COVID, with some publishing government information and others focusing on practical tips for readers.

  • Framing Syrian refugees: Examining news framing effects on attitudes
toward refugee admissions and anti-immigrant sentiment

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Juan Liu
      First page: 6
Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
This study investigates the effects of exposure to news frames on attitudes toward Syrian refugee admissions and anti-immigrant sentiment. Findings show that framing Syrian refugees, ranging from benefits, victims to a security threat did invoke changes of attitudes toward admitting Syrian refugees. Participants reading a benefit frame story expressed more favorable opinions on accepting Syrian refugees than participants in the threat frame condition. In contrast to the extant literature, arguing victim frame enhances positive attitudes, the findings suggested that participants, who were exposed to a victim frame story yielded stronger anti-immigrant sentiment than participants who read a threat frame story. These findings advance scholarship on media framing of refugees and its effect on anti-immigrant sentiment and have important refugee admission policy and advocacy implications.

           Pandemic-Related Reporting

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Hans Schmidt
      First page: 26
Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
The COVID-19 pandemic generated tremendous journalistic attention, and occurred during a period of increasing politicization and polarization in America’s news media. This study considers the intersection of both phenomena, and the extent of politicization in recent and historical pandemic-related reporting. Results suggest that political topics, actions and actors have frequently been the focus of COVID-19-related reporting, and that such political content has grown more substantial over time.
