  • How COVID-19 has affected college newspapers: A mixed-methods study

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Jessica Sparks, Frank LoMonte, April Rubin
Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
This study explores how the COVID-19 pandemic—with its college closures, business shutdowns, and student enrollment declines—impacted the independence of college media during the pandemic, and how those impacts will continue after the pandemic is over. Using a mixed-methods approach based on the Hierarchical Influences Model framework (Shoemaker & Reese, 2013), this study integrates the results of a survey of 126 student media news outlets with interviews from 15 well-known news organizations from universities with established independent practices, to establish a relationship between revenue sources and student participation with independence measures. Results confirmed a stronger push toward digital products and the use of a wider variety of revenue-generating techniques during the pandemic.

syndrome reframed as a national news item during COVID-19 pandemic

      Authors: Sada Reed
Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
This study is a content analysis of American news coverage of World Trade Center (WTC) cough syndrome, a common ailment among 9/11 survivors, published before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Before the pandemic, coverage was limited to areas geographically proximate to the attacks and embodied themes of respiratory disease descriptions, heroism and patriotism and government involvement. Pandemic-era coverage expanded to areas where survivors now live and embodied themes of survivors comparing 9/11 to the pandemic, survivors’ vulnerability to COVID-19, lack of federal government transparency, calls for caution and safety protocols, heroism and patriotism and the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund.

      Authors: Rhonda Gibson
Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
In-depth interviews with 26 journalists from large mainstream news outlets who covered the Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission U.S. Supreme Court case indicate that LGBTQ+ advocacy organization efforts to influence journalists’ decision-making processes related to story angle and sourcing were unsuccessful. Instead, journalists relied on official court documents as sources, avoiding press advisories from social movement organizations in an effort to maintain neutrality and impartiality.

Authors: Umberto Famulari, Lesa Hatley Major
Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
A content analysis of U.S. digital news reveals that the visual coverage of criminal jury trials mainly focuses on defendants and law enforcement officials. The U.S. digital news still often use mugshots to portray Black/African American defendants, and law enforcement officials are significantly overrepresented as White and male. In partial contrast to past news coverage, Black/African American defendants are not depicted in handcuff at the crime scene or slovenly dressed more often than defendants from other ethnic groups.

  • Churning off the news: An analysis of newspaper subscriber churn across
           digital devices

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Vincent C. Peña, Edward C. Malthouse, Rachel Davis Mersey
Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
Subscriber churn is of utmost importance for newspapers, which have for decades been struggling to maintain the robust readership they used to enjoy. This is especially true in a digital media landscape that operates within an attention economy. This study examined the difference in subscriber churn across 29 newspaper properties in large U.S. chain. Using subscriber data gathered from all 29 newspapers, this study analyzed whether the device and digital platform on which one consumes news impacts the churn probability of subscribers. The authors found that there were clusters of device usage and that different combinations of device usage impacted churn probability for subscribers, particularly on mobile. Churn was highest for those using mobile browser, presumably because of poor reading experience, which is a call to action for news organizations who have not prioritized the mobile news experience.

Authors: Erin Ash, Kelsea Schulenberg, Madison Wilson, SaiDatta Mikkilineni
Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
In early April 2020, as states began to release demographic data related to COVID-19 infections, hospitalizations, and deaths, it became clear that Black individuals in the United States were disproportionately impacted by the virus. The current research is a content analysis of stories about racial disparities related to COVID-19 published by U.S. newspapers between April and June 2020 (N = 181) conducted to examine framing patterns. Specifically, the study examined how relative risk was communicated and the causes attributed to the disparity. The overall results suggest mixed progress in terms of how racial health disparities are communicated to the public.

Authors: Joseph Aversa, Evan Cleave, Jenna Jacobson, Tony Hernandez, Stephanie Dizonno, Michael Macdonald
Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
With Canada becoming the first G20 country to legalize the recreational use of cannabis, there has been increasing interest in the emergence of this new marketplace. Newspaper framing helps to shape public opinion on legalization and news sources play a role in determining how the public perceives the use of cannabis. This research analyzes how mainstream newspapers reported on the legalization of recreational cannabis in Canada in the years before and after legalization (between 2016 and 2019). Using a content analysis of 1,390 cannabis-related articles, 11 dominant reporting themes are identified. Over time, there was a shift from negative and sensationalist cannabis news coverage toward more balanced and progressive framing. The findings identify the influence of editorial political stance on thematic coverage.

Authors: Mohamed Ben Moussa, Aziz Douai, Mehmet Yalcin Parmaksiz
Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
This study examines Turkish online news media coverage of the COVID-19 outbreak in the country. It explores media framing narratives, particularly how they reflected and promoted elite polarization or consensus in the COVID-19 debate. The findings shed light on Turkish political power dynamics during the first stage in the national response to the pandemic. The study highlights the calculations of political partisans who are keen on building a fragile consensus in an increasingly polarized society.

Authors: Noah Buntain, Carol M. Liebler, Kyle Webster
Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
The purpose of this research is twofold. Study I assesses content analyses of news (2015–2020) that sampled from databases to see which are used most frequently and to observe how researchers justify and contextualize their database choices. Results indicate that Nexis Uni is the database most commonly employed, and that researchers rarely justify their choice or include mention of database limitations. Next, Study II compares Factiva, Google News, NewsBank, Nexis Uni and ProQuest, finding considerable differences in number of stories, geographic reach, media type and coverage of a specific news event.

      Authors: Melissa Greene-Blye, Teri Finneman
Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
This study examines how three Native women politicians were portrayed in Native newspapers. The analysis found striking differences in how national Native media cover women politicians compared with prior findings in mainstream newspapers. The data illustrate the influence of Indigenous standpoint theory on the journalistic norms of Native media and its distinct lack of gendered politics, revealing significant prioritization of policy over personal and contrasts in the coverage amount and tone for conservative women politicians.

Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
This article examines how 22 Nebraska newspapers and a wire service covered nitrate contamination in Nebraska’s groundwater over nearly 4 years. We found coverage lacked depth and examined a few solutions although 88% of Nebraskans get drinking water from the ground. Reliance on fertilizer and irrigation for crop production leads to groundwater contamination, making this a concerning coverage gap as climate change impacts promise to make farming more challenging and increase environmental risks.

Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
This study concerns Twitter use in a large local news market. Nonprofit newsrooms and a regional newspaper used replies to engage in reciprocal exchanges with audiences, but broadcasters used retweets, hashtags, and mentions for branding. News media differed in attention to news topics valued by audiences, with resource-constrained local newspapers overemphasizing sports. Attention to weather and crime were predictors of audience sharing of tweets, but sports posts were less likely to be liked or retweeted.

The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the role news organizations play in disseminating information and shaping public response to the crisis. This study adopts an ecological approach in examining Russian regional journalists’ adaptations to the pandemic. Based on in-depth interviews, the study found that a worsened economic situation has increased dependence on state subsidies. Journalists avoided questioning authorities’ response to COVID, with some publishing government information and others focusing on practical tips for readers.

toward refugee admissions and anti-immigrant sentiment

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Juan Liu
      First page: 6
Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
This study investigates the effects of exposure to news frames on attitudes toward Syrian refugee admissions and anti-immigrant sentiment. Findings show that framing Syrian refugees, ranging from benefits, victims to a security threat did invoke changes of attitudes toward admitting Syrian refugees. Participants reading a benefit frame story expressed more favorable opinions on accepting Syrian refugees than participants in the threat frame condition. In contrast to the extant literature, arguing victim frame enhances positive attitudes, the findings suggested that participants, who were exposed to a victim frame story yielded stronger anti-immigrant sentiment than participants who read a threat frame story. These findings advance scholarship on media framing of refugees and its effect on anti-immigrant sentiment and have important refugee admission policy and advocacy implications.

Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
The COVID-19 pandemic generated tremendous journalistic attention, and occurred during a period of increasing politicization and polarization in America’s news media. This study considers the intersection of both phenomena, and the extent of politicization in recent and historical pandemic-related reporting. Results suggest that political topics, actions and actors have frequently been the focus of COVID-19-related reporting, and that such political content has grown more substantial over time.
