Small-market journalists occupy an important role in keeping local communities informed. This research examines the job-related stressors post-COVID these U.S. small-market newspaper journalists face that impact their stress and anxiety and how the support provided by their news organizations also contributes to their sense of well-being. Interviews with 17 journalists in the Southeastern United States indicate that key aspects of organizational support may have a significant impact on well-being and job satisfaction.

The Kiowa County Media Center was set up as a community media that would focus solely on citizen-produced news content. But challenges such as technophobia, citizen’s lack of time to contribute content, and an aging population meant the media center had to reinvent itself and evolve beyond its citizen-journalism mission if it hoped to survive. Four main findings from this study offer key lessons for other community media facing challenges.

      Authors: Jenny Dean, Francesco Somaini
Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
A content analysis of news coverage of the Tokyo 2021 Summer Olympics (N = 561) found that three major U.S. dailies ran more stories about women’s than men’s sports, confirming the trend recorded in networked television prime-time programming toward a finally adequate representation of female athletes. The findings suggest that efforts to foster gender equality can help challenge gender stereotypes in the media. The regional differences detected may indicate the reflection of lingering masculine hegemony.

Authors: Steve J. Collins, William Kinnally, Jennifer Sandoval
Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
This study used data from 52 countries to examine newspaper journalists’ perceptions of their professional autonomy and whether autonomy is improving. Results suggest that nearly three-quarters of newspaper journalists enjoy some degree of professional autonomy. Journalists in individualistic cultures and high uncertainty avoidance cultures reported higher levels of autonomy. A healthy democracy also predicted journalistic autonomy. Overall, results suggest journalistic freedom is declining. Interestingly, stronger human development was associated with perceived declines in autonomy.

Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
The study in hand quantitatively content analyzes the news frames in the leading Pakistani Urdu language and English language newspapers for 3 years. The study contributes to the theory of framing and the extended parallel process model. English language newspapers in comparison to Urdu language dailies in Pakistan had somewhat responsibly communicated the risk of climate change by covering both the effects of climate change and the climate efficacy.

  • Examining opinion journalism in the United Arab Emirates national press: A
           comparative analysis

Authors: Khalaf Tahat, Ahmed Mansoori, Dina Tahat, Mohammed Habes
Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
This study provides a comprehensive examination of the primary characteristics of opinion journalism within two prominent newspapers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Utilizing a content analysis approach, a systematic random sample comprising 560 opinion articles published in 2022 was analyzed from these two printed newspapers in the UAE. The findings unveiled a predominance of male columnists (87%) and a predominant focus on international issues (67%) within opinion journalism featured in the leading UAE newspapers. Interpretation emerged as the primary goal (37%), with political topics ranking highest on the agenda (37%). Noteworthy differences were observed between the newspapers at the individual level, with nearly half of Al-Ittihad’s columnists being local, while The National’s writers exhibited a more international profile. Moreover, issues pertinent to the Emirates garnered less attention in The National compared with Al-Ittihad. In addition, while The National prioritized interpretation, Al-Ittihad leaned toward providing information. Furthermore, The National predominantly addressed political and conflict issues, whereas Al-Ittihad focused on political and social issues. The study’s implications and limitations are deliberated upon in further detail.

Authors: Justin F. Willett, Shelly Rodgers, Jon Stemmle
Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
The public health model of reporting calls for public health professionals and journalists to work together to provide social and environmental context, risk factors, and prevention information in news coverage of public health issues. This quantitative content analysis describes the prevalence of contextual information in Missouri newspaper coverage of the opioid crisis. Results indicate Missouri newspapers are not depicting the opioid crisis as a public health issue. The study has implications for research and practice.

  • Nigerians’ perception of newspaper framing of COVID-19 stories and
adherence to government’s containment policy (2020–2021)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Olanrewaju O. P. Ajakaiye, I. B. Oloyede, Omowale Adelabu, Felix Olajide Talabi, Bernice O. Sanusi, Rachael O. Ojeka-John, Kehinde Abdul-Afees Ayantunji
Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
There is a known fact that the public depends largely on the media for information. However, such information might not have been perceived rightly as sent by the media. Hence, the objective of this study is to examine the extent to which information on the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic containment policy flows from the government to the public through the pages of newspapers. Aside from examining how these policies were framed, it seeks to also find out if Nigerians perceived the coverage by newspapers as relevant for them to comply with them. Adopting a descriptive methodological approach which systematically differs from most previous studies because substantial studies on the subject matter use qualitative methods. Findings reveal that Newspapers’ framing of COVID-19 stories does not correlate with public adherence to the government’s containment policy and the volume of newspaper coverage of COVID-19 stories does not correlate with public perception of the importance of the government containment policy on the disease. The study concluded that even though advancement in technology has given rise to the use of other media such as social media, the efficacy/potency and relevance of the newspaper cannot be brushed aside despite this advancement. It is, however, recommended that further studies should be conducted to examine the challenges faced by press through Key Informant Interview (KII) in the carrying coverage on the COVID-19 pandemic in other to strike balance.

Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
The extended parallel process model summarizes the positive impact of threat and efficacy messages on behavioral intentions. In news contexts, research to date shows national journalists emphasize threat information and neglect efficacious information. Findings show U.S. university student journalists emphasized efficacy rather than threats countering past content analysis research. We also found environmental and sustainability communities of practice did not predict threat and efficacy information, but topics did.

  • Antecedents to perceived news media importance and motivations for
           newspaper use: A needs-based framework

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Junghyun Moon, Jason T. Peifer
Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
Amid widespread skepticism about news media actors and journalistic practices, questions about citizens’ use of and dependency upon mainstream news media remain ripe for investigation. This research is designed to deepen an understanding of the concept of Perceived News Media Importance (PNMI) and consider it as a factor undergirding contemporary newspaper use. To this end, this study draws on the frameworks of uses and gratifications (U&G) and media system dependency theory for orienting an understanding of PNMI and its role in motivating newspaper use. Furthermore, based on the theoretical assumption that individuals’ various needs bear a capacity to shape their perceptions of media, Need for Evidence, and Need for Orientation were modeled herein as antecedents to PNMI. Analyses of data from two surveys—the first conducted in 2019 (Study 1: N = 1,077) and, the second, in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 (Study 2: N = 546)—confirm that PNMI not only positively predicts newspaper use but also mediates the effects of its hypothesized antecedents on newspaper use. The findings of the study highlight the utility of PNMI and related concepts for understanding citizens’ media consumption behaviors in a rapidly changing and uncertain media environment.

      Authors: Stefanie E. Davis Kempton
Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
In June 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court dissolved federal protection for a woman’s right to an abortion and gave each individual state control over abortion laws. The ruling caused a media frenzy, with news outlets across the United States and the world reporting on the ground-breaking decision. The present study employs a textual analysis of this news coverage in the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, paying special attention to the people interviewed as news sources. News sources were placed into categories based on occupation and gender and the frequency by which the sources were cited was recorded. Findings suggest that while many of the news sources were women, male politicians’ voices still dominate the narrative of women’s reproductive rights in the United States. Practical implications for journalism, policy and law are discussed as are pathways for future research.

      Authors: Shenid Bhayroo
Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
This research applies framing theory and basic quantitative content methods to analyze the New York Times coverage of the 1959 Cuban Revolution, in order to examine assertions that New York Times stories contributed to Fidel Castro’s victory. Specifically, the study analyzes datelines, bylines, types of sources and story framing in all the stories about Cuba published on the front page of the New York Times between January 1, 1957, and December 31, 1962. The findings of this research contest long-held claims that the New York Times stories, in particular those written by reporter Herbert L. Matthews, contributed to the success of the Cuban Revolution. Matthews’s three-part front-page scoop in 1957 introduced Castro and the bearded Cuban revolutionaries to the world, but his stories and subsequent New York Times coverage are unlikely to have been decisive in Castro’s overthrow of the Batista regime. This study argues instead that the New York Times coverage of the 1959 Cuban Revolution was written through an aspirational lens, much like the stories about other major political revolutions written by U.S. foreign correspondents, and that stories played an important inter-media agenda-setting role, as evident from the many news organizations that covered the revolution after Matthews’ scoop.

  • What actually is peace journalism' Uncovering its (lack of) definition
           and related practices

      Authors: Sima Bhowmik, Patrick Ferrucci
Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
While peace journalism is an often-evoked concept in academic and journalism industry literature, its exact definition remains rather elusive. This study utilizes a theoretical framework of metajournalistic discourse to understand how practitioners define peace journalism and identify its related practices. Results show that peace journalism is constructed with advocacy in mind. We argue the concepts of peace journalism and traditional journalism are not adversaries, but rather complementary.

  • Easy to read, easy to judge: Assessing readability as a heuristic for
           credibility in news

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Authors: Jessica F. Sparks, T. Franklin Waddell
Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
Despite calls for journalists and media agencies to address a disconnect between news audiences and news prose, content continues to increase in its difficulty to read and comprehend for the masses. While readability is often associated with audience comprehension and engagement, studies have neglected to assess whether readability is a factor in audience assessments of the credibility of content. Using an online experimental design, this study examines whether readability acts as a heuristic that helps news consumers make credibility judgments of news. Results show that readability tends not to be a predictor of credibility perception, regardless of partisanship strength or media use preferences. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

  • Context clues: Citizens and their higher valuation of the contextualist
           journalist role

Authors: Kyser Lough, Ryan Wallace, Christian Staal Bruun Overgaard
Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
This study examines media trust and how members of the public perceive and value various journalistic roles using a nationally representative survey (n = 1,026) to redefine and confirm how the American public places significant value on the contextualist role of journalism. The individual journalistic functions that make up contextual reporting are also highly valued. Media trust is primarily predicted by overall journalistic role perception, even above ideological views, but not for the contextualist role.

  • It’s so meta: Metacommunicative storytelling on news
           organizations’ Instagram accounts

Authors: Rich G. Johnson, Miles Romney, Dustin Wilson, Emily Gamel, Molly Bohannon
Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
News organizations increasingly utilize visual elements to communicate news and information to audiences. Digital editing technology allows producers to enhance visual communication through the addition of supplementary text or filters to photos. Such metacommunication can alter the intrinsic meaning of a photograph while increasing audience engagement. Traditional photojournalism norms state that images should not be altered. This study examines whether metacommunicative news images receive more engagement and whether some outlets are more likely than others to share such images.

  • News media heeding call to reduce reporting names of mass shooters

      Authors: Thomas J. Hrach
Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
The U.S. news media has been under pressure to avoid reporting the names of the perpetrators of mass shootings. This research shows a connection between the number of people killed in a mass shooting and the number of times the news media report the perpetrators’ name. It shows that from 2012 to 2021 the news media heeded the call to limit the number of times the name of a mass shooter was reported.

           the Black community journalist

Authors: William Singleton, Wilson Lowrey, Nick Buzzelli
Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
This study examines how Black journalists in local legacy newspapers, digital startup media and historically Black newspapers have expressed journalistic objectivity and enacted journalistic roles. Findings showed more neutral coverage in historically white media, which was expected, while coverage in the historically Black newspaper and the digital startup reflected an advocacy role—one that did not fit within the four expected roles. Also, a “clarifier” role emerged in which journalists encouraged local protest groups to distinguish their identities.

      Authors: Shujun Liu
Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
Drawing from agenda building theory, this study explores the impact of factors like journalistic culture, national stance and conflict periods on the similarity and dissimilarity of network agendas in China-U.S. trade conflict news across China, the United States, Singapore and Ireland. Findings revealed significant correlations in network agendas across countries, albeit with disparities between China and the United States. Notably, the correlation weakened in both Chinese and U.S. news following the trade war’s eruption.

  • Investigating political news coverage patterns in Bangladesh during
           2013-2022 using computational methods

Authors: Md. Sayeed Al-Zaman, Mridha Md. Shiblee Noman
Abstract: Newspaper Research Journal, Ahead of Print.
The political landscape in Bangladesh is complex and multifaceted, with limited exploration in relation to the rapidly growing news industry. This study aims to address this gap by analyzing 15,801 news articles, utilizing trend analysis and topic modeling. The findings reveal a consistent decline in political news coverage, with sporadic increases during parliamentary election years. The dominant focus of news topics revolves around the two major political parties, the Awami League (AL) and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), indicating the country’s two-party-centric nature of politics. Smaller political parties receive media coverage primarily when they form coalitions with major parties, further highlighting the dominance of the two major parties in political news coverage. The study also uncovers a preference for individual political figures over incidents or events in news coverage, suggesting a patron-client relationship within major political parties and a hierarchical decision-making system. In addition, the study identifies shifts in news framing during significant events, such as national elections, indicating changes in person-centric news frames, but always involving one of the two major political parties. Finally, the study highlights and raises important questions about potential political control over media and journalistic activities, stimulating discourse on journalistic freedom and political free speech.
