  • Campus Coverage of An Execution: A Narrative Analysis

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Desiree Hill
Abstract: Journalism & Mass Communication Educator, Ahead of Print.
Research demonstrates that most professional journalists will experience trauma in their work. Yet almost no research has focused on college students’ coverage of a traumatic event. Narrative analysis explores the experiences of 12 university students who reported and produced execution coverage for their college newscast. The data reveal that the students struggled with feelings of detachment, uncertainty, and dread before, during, and after the coverage. The research also explored the students’ reaction to counseling sessions scheduled by faculty to mitigate the trauma. Findings illuminate a path for student media programs to follow to help students prepare for potentially troubling content.

      Authors: John V. Pavlik
Abstract: Journalism & Mass Communication Educator, Ahead of Print.
Generative artificial intelligence (AI) is ushering in an era of potential transformation of journalism and media content. This essay considers one notable generative AI platform called ChatGPT made available to the public in 2022 for free use. ChatGPT allows users to enter text prompts and rapidly generates text responses drawn from its knowledge acquired via machine learning in engagement with the internet. This essay is coauthored by a human journalism and media professor in collaboration with ChatGPT. The essay demonstrates the capacity and limitations of ChatGPT and offers reflections on the implications of generative AI for journalism and media education.

  • Toward a Taxonomy of News Video

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Denby Weller
Abstract: Journalism & Mass Communication Educator, Ahead of Print.
News video is a complicated medium for journalism students to grasp. It is bounded by its own set of conventions, some of which are drawn from film theory and others from pragmatic considerations in under-resourced newsrooms. Although video production is increasingly a required skill for students graduating from journalism programs, there is a dearth of resources for undergraduate students interested in understanding why certain kinds of videos work better in some settings than others. This paper aims to develop a taxonomy of news video communication designed to help students further their understanding of the nuances, challenges, and strengths of video as a tool for today’s multimedia-savvy journalist.

      Authors: Caryn Coatney
Abstract: Journalism & Mass Communication Educator, Ahead of Print.
Educators increasingly need to teach journalism within everchanging digital newsrooms. This study conducts a rare analysis of popular, United States–focused textbooks to answer a foundational question: What is journalism' Drawing on concepts of journalism’s social function, this analysis finds the university textbooks are providing more upbeat messages, but significantly different definitions. General textbooks often emphasize a dominant, print-oriented watchdog role, while specialized books mostly accentuate journalists’ neighborly, multimedia approach to reporting everyday life. This study points to the value of providing pluralist journalism approaches that show varied views of journalists’ moral authority in reporting for diverse audiences.

Semantic Network Analysis of Job Descriptions of In-Person and Remote
           Positions During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Authors: Ke Jiang, Qian Xu, Ashleigh Afromsky
Abstract: Journalism & Mass Communication Educator, Ahead of Print.
Using text mining and semantic network analysis, this study analyzed the job descriptions of 34,787 positions about media analytics from Indeed.com to compare how the in-person and remote jobs differ to inform educators about integrating analytics in the media and communications curriculum. We found that the in-person positions emphasized more on the skills of verbal, interpersonal, and organizational communication, whereas the remote positions asked more for written communication. While the in-person positions had higher expectations of using general data management and analysis tools, the remote positions emphasized more on the use of social media analytics and digital marketing tools.

Accredited U.S. Journalism and Mass Communication Programs

Authors: Timothy E. Bajkiewicz, Katherine Saunders Nash
Abstract: Journalism & Mass Communication Educator, Ahead of Print.
Assessment of learning outcomes is a challenging standard for journalism and mass communication programs accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications, typically accounting for half of all annual noncompliances. This study conducts the first content analysis on assessment plans from accredited programs using categories from a Council-generated guide as a best-practice document. Findings show that while most plans include many recommended components, and that every plan had direct learning measures, plans varied widely in component inclusion and assessment activities.

  • How to Increase News Literate Behaviors Via Interventions: Eight
           Guidelines by Early Adolescents

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: S. L. Tamboer, S. Daalmans, I. Molenaar, T. Bosse, M. Kleemans
      First page: 363
Abstract: Journalism & Mass Communication Educator, Ahead of Print.
To develop guidelines for more effective news literacy interventions, we conducted focus groups with early adolescents (12-15 years old) on what these interventions should be like. Participants (N = 55) discussed that motivating early adolescents is a challenge, but did provide more insight into their preferences and needs. Future interventions should be easy to find and use, make news literate behaviors more accessible, should be interactive, and should tailor the content toward the target group. Developing interventions based on these guidelines could positively influence various predictors of news literate behaviors in early adolescents, and, in turn, lead to more news literate behaviors.

  • The Tenure and Promotion Standards Used to Evaluate Creative Scholarship
in the Media and Communication Fields

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

      Authors: Serena Miller
      First page: 376
Abstract: Journalism & Mass Communication Educator, Ahead of Print.
The tenure and promotion system influences whether, how, and the extent faculty members produce creative scholarship. A thematic analysis of 69 media and communication departments’ documents was carried out to systematically assess creative scholarship standards. The results showed most documents formally recognized creative scholarship and equated it to traditional research. Results showed less concreteness in comparison with traditional research standards. Artistic and professional peer review criteria such as securing awards, exhibitions, and festivals were the primary evaluative approaches. One implication is that leadership and senior faculty members need to rethink how to evaluate impact because scholars often seek to engage local nonacademics.

Abstract: Journalism & Mass Communication Educator, Ahead of Print.
The American news media is facing a crisis of public trust fueled, in part, by an epistemological disagreement of what constitutes quality news. Through a series of 50 interviews with journalism professionals and students, this research investigates how evidence-based journalism is created by gathering data on expert and novice research practices. Interviews were transcribed, coded, and analyzed through the lens of the ACRL Framework to provide the foundation for a journalism information literacy framework. This analysis can be used to inform library instruction and higher education journalism curricula and offers insights and greater transparency on the processes that underlie trustworthy news.

Abstract: Journalism & Mass Communication Educator, Ahead of Print.
This mixed-method study investigates the state of media and information literacy education in Pakistan by underlining the availability of relevant courses and trained teaching and research faculty at both public and private universities. Using United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) framework, this study explores the perception of faculty members across six key areas of general education and teacher development to improve the quality of media and information literacy in the country. These six key areas include (a) policy and vision, (b) curriculum and assessment, (c) pedagogy, (d) media and information, (e) organization and administration, and (f) teachers’ professional development.

Authors: Gregory P. Perreault, Daniela V. Dimitrova

Abstract: Journalism & Mass Communication Educator, Ahead of Print.
Global challenges in combating a range of issues—the coronavirus pandemic, climate change, hostility, migration, misinformation—necessitate global collaboration. The Fulbright Scholar programs provide numerous ways in which to develop the tools to support such collaboration. In this commentary, we provide an overview of the Fulbright experience, reflect on Fulbright’s potential for enhancing scholarship in journalism and mass communication, and pinpoint areas scholars should consider in applying for their own Fulbright grant. The Fulbright is an essential tool in addressing the global problems that plague our world, and this essay serves as an introduction to the Fulbright experience.
