  • From the Apple of Ein Sof to the Apple of One's Eye: Food as a Metaphor
for Magical Mergers and Kabbalistic Thought

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Premodern esoteric traditions and occult practices emphasize the seemingly hidden powers of common-day objects made possible via invisible forces and interactions. The wisdom of how to use and channel these powers is potentially accessible everywhere—provided one knows how and where to look—and even the most common objects can reveal hidden truths. I argue that a closer look at food practices and their prescribed uses in premodern occult lore recorded in Iberia can contribute to a deeper understanding of the central role food played in natural philosophy, the understanding of man's relationship to the material world. Indeed, many foodstuffs go through transformations before they can be consumed, whether this be ... Read More

  • Are These Eggs Cooked' A Novel Interpretation of the Corbacho's Stolen
           Egg

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Critics have underscored the aspects of caricature and misogyny in the Corbacho, focusing on how Alfonso Martínez de Toledo negatively represents women through their presumptively realistic speech. The oft-quoted monologue about the stolen egg from the first chapter of the second part of the Corbacho is one of the more colorful of examples of this speech. Many have read the passage and been amused by the great expectations that this egg held for the interlocutor. In this monologue, a woman bemoans the loss of an egg, describing through hyperbole the egg's contents and the expectations that would have been fulfilled by its use. This monologue contains many references to its consumption. The owner damns and curses ... Read More

  • The Rhetoric of Impurity in Medieval Iberia

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Albert Memmi writes that in its extreme, racism merges into myth (176).1 Medieval Iberia gave birth to many myths: a paradise of tolerance, the seed of the Black Legend, and, to many theorists, the birth of modern racism. Myth does not signify untruth; it signifies, rather, a convenient story in which complexities are erased. Nation building requires origin myths; stories that define a people and justify actions that could be interpreted as racializing or, at the very least, acts of "stigmatization" (Harney 6). Maintaining these myths throughout history, however, requires a constant dismantling of inconvenient truths. To discuss race in the Middle Ages, according to Michael Harney, is to be guilty of anachronism ... • Tales of the Kitchen Underbelly: The Picaresque Discourse of Cooking

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: On ne fait pas d'omelette sans casser d'oeufsYou cannot make an omelette without breaking some eggs.Food has long been understood as one of the narrative motors of picaresque literature. Wandering through an impoverished Spain, pícaros steal and deceive in order to meet the basic needs for survival.1 And even when their stomach is finally full, the imminent threat of future scarcity pushes them to have one more bite or steal one more loaf of bread.2 In this regard, critics have generally posed the relationship between food and pícaros in terms of hunger and food consumption, advancing a parallel between their desire for food and their longing for medro, or upward social mobility.3 Moving from one master to another ...
           Carlos Astarita (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Read More

Béreiziat-Lang, Robert A. Folger y Miriam Palacios Larrosa (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

• Sacred Skin: The Legend of St. Bartholomew in Spanish Art and Literature
           by Andrew M. Beresford (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: While all torture is intended to break the victim's will and assert the power of the torturer (whether as individual or as representative of the state), some forms also focus on deconstructing the body into its parts in order to obliterate any sense of self. Among these, flaying stands apart as a particularly gruesome process that targets the skin as organ and as organizing principle for the body. As a form of torture, removing the epidermis at once activates all the nerves that end at the skin (for as long as the person survives) yet also eliminates the barrier that insulates the person as individual from the outside world both in body and mind. Thus, the very removal of skin proves its presence to be central to ... Read More

  • Signa Iudicii: Orígenes, fuentes y tradición hispánica by Estefanía
           Bernabé Sánchez (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Read More

           and Ricardo Pichel (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: While comprehensive and updated guides to medieval Spanish literature are readily available for students and researchers (one has only to think of Carlos Alvar and José Manuel Lucía Megías's Diccionario filológico de literatura medieval española, or Fernando Gómez Redondo's encyclopedic volumes on Castilian prose, meter, and poetry), there is a lack of similar in-depth studies of the literary production in the other languages of the Castilian crown during this period. Such is the case of Galician-Portuguese literature, an important but neglected tradition often studied in the context of Alfonso X's Marian devotion and the renewal of courtly culture in fourteenth-century Castile, whose prose is yet largely unknown ... • Revisitando a Berceo: lecturas del siglo XXI ed. by Francisco Domínguez
           Matito, and Elisa Borsari (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The title of this book would suggest that the authors and editors were making a reassessment of both Berceo and the critical scaffolding that has grown up around his work. To some degree, especially the articles on the Poema de santa Oria, this is probably true, but, except for one article on the miracle of the "romero engañado," the Milagros are left to fend for themselves. This book is less about new directions in Berceo scholarship as it is about updating different aspects of Berceo scholarship. Natacha Crocoll does offer up a very intriguing, if not post-modern, analysis of "space" in Berceo's work which definitely falls outside of the critical expectations of most readers. Others, however, such as Ilzarbe ... Read More

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: This special volume of La corónica, dedicated to premodern Iberian food studies and guest edited by Emily Colbert Cairns, features seven articles by scholars working on aspects of Iberian foodways and traditions in a variety of languages from the early twelfth century well into the seventeenth century. Colbert Cairns's introduction makes a compelling case for what such studies, and perhaps more importantly, what the traditions, texts, and histories of premodern Iberia have to offer the larger field of food studies, which, as they say, is having a moment. As we continue working in the shadow of the pandemic, I again wish to thank my fellow editors, Isidro Rivera, Christina Ivers, Montserrat Piera, and David Arbesú ...
peninsular ed. by Maribel Fierro, y Alejandro García Sanjuán (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Fernando de Rojas by Antonio Gargano (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The title of Antonio Gargano's book, La ley universal de la vida: desorden y modernidad en La Celestina de Fernando de Rojas, summarizes the primary focus of his study. Gargano examines themes and motifs in Celestina that reflect what he calls "un proceso cultural de secularización" (10). The author considers how the text incorporates and reflects elements of an urban culture, mercantile economy, and competing systems of social values. In chapter one, "La Celestina y el otoño de la Edad Media," he establishes the theoretical basis for his study—Rojas's use of comic elements and characters as vehicles for expressing non-conventional values and radical changes in human behavior. Specifically, the author analyzes ... Read More

Read More

Abstract: This volume is an extension of two sessions held at the International Congress on Medieval Studies in Kalamazoo, Michigan (2018). The collection of articles honors the legacy of John J. Nitti's work: the founding of the Old Spanish History project in 1972, which later transformed into the Hispanic Seminary of Medieval Studies, now housed under the auspices of the Hispanic Society in New York, and the Bibliography of Old Spanish Texts which, in turn, transformed into PhiloBiblon, now at the University of California-Berkeley.The first chapter, "On Dating the Agricultural Texts Appended to Ferrer Saiol's Translation of the Opus agriculturae of Palladius," written by Thomas Capuano, is a close study of the Libro de ... • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: To consider the tensions between how religious communities and exemplarity provided additional freedoms for women while, at the same time, placing them under increasingly close scrutiny requires subtle minds, and the collection of essays that María Morrás, Rebeca Sanmartín Bastida, and Yonsoo Kim have assembled proves itself more than up to such a nuanced task. The collection covers four centuries, as well as an array of different themes, disciplines, and critical frameworks, yet manages to prevent a cohesive insight into the larger notions of gender and exemplarity as the essays readily bolster one another.Morrás's introduction goes beyond providing the cursory summary of the volume, and the editor skillfully ... Abstract: For the first time, Hispanomedievalists have access to the extensive literary corpus of the fifteenth-century Ibero-Jewish writer Šelomoh ben Reuben Bonafed, thanks to Arturo Prats's lucid Spanish translation and his philologically rigorous companion edition of Bonafed's Hebrew originals. An extension of the dissertation that Prats produced under the supervision of the late Ángel Sáenz-Badillos, this two-volume edition of Bonafed's complete works not only captures a major Ibero-Jewish voice in its poetic and historical specificity; it also introduces a whole generation of scholars to a distinctly Hispano-Semitic poetic practice—that is, the tradition of epistolary versification that arose among kat ha-mešoreim ...

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Guillermo Tomás Faci's thoroughly researched and well-written book represents a welcome and much needed addition to the history of Aragon. As the author notes in the Introduction, few historians of pre-modern Iberia have endeavored to follow Peter Burke's call for a "social history of language." This neglect is not arbitrary. A rejection of nationalist narratives that anachronistically link these languages to the present, a tacit abandonment of language studies to other disciplines, and the continued politicization of language in Spain have all dissuaded historians from pursuing the topic. Scholarship on the Aragonese language remains particularly neglected for a variety of reasons, including its short-lived tenure ... Read More

  • Premodern Food Studies: Practices and Ideologies

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The study of the material practices of foodways and the cultural, religious, and historical implications of the practices of food preparation and consumption constitute important aspects of the burgeoning field of food studies. Focusing not only on recipes, ingredients, and methods of food preparation, but also on the material culture and spiritual significance of food and how the latter change over time allows scholars to better understand historical moments and to reflect on their cultural context. It allows us to discuss marginalized communities, including women and religious others that are harder to capture in other fields of study. Tracing the history of food and examining foodways gives insights into how ... Read More

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Lo importante no es lo que se come, sino cómo se come. Read More

  • Establishing Biological Superiority: Food and Nobility in the Fifteenth
           Century

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: xref ref-type="other" id="P-47"/>The fifteenth century added an important chapter to the history of oligarchic privilege and the legitimization of human differentials. The debated subject of whether some people were simply better than others and were thus entitled to a privileged position in society that gave them wealth and power hinged to a great extent on the notion of nobility. Rather than just constituting a closed discourse by those setting themselves apart as a legitimized elite, writings on nobility looked to also create a discourse on those it was seeking to leave out, thus establishing a parallel narrative of inferiority. In this value system, where nobility was used as a medium for discussions on ... Read More

  • 'Leyenda muy sabrosa': The Poetics of Flavor and the Translation of Taste
in Berceo's Milagros de Nuestra Señora and its Latin Source

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Metaphors of flavor are part of our daily lives and in ways that we might not register consciously. How often do we describe as sweet or bitter things that we cannot taste with our tongues: bitter rejection or sweet success, for example' Gustatory descriptions, whether literal references to food or synesthetic metaphors for physical or emotional sensations, are a typical aspect of literary expression from the ancient world forward. The fact that such expressions occur in a particular piece of literature does not necessarily tell us anything about the work itself, but the ways in which an author uses (or does not use) flavor can provide much insight. On the formal level, the deployment of flavor can tell us about ... Read More
