Abstract: This volume marks a return, after the publication of our 50th-anniversary volume to our regular schedule of publishing original and insightful scholarship in medieval Iberian languages, literatures and cultures, as well as book reviews and forums organized around particular themes or topics. In addition to the labor involved in publishing the journal, the editorial team (myself, Isidro Rivera, Christi Ivers, David Arbesú, and Montserrat Piera) also organize awards and prizes (the John K. Walsh Award for best article, the International Book Award, and the Nancy F. Marino Prize for best paper by a junior scholar at Kalamazoo), as well as organize and preside over panels and social events at various conferences ... Read More

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In 1984, there arrived at the University of Georgia (UGA) two new M. A. candidates hailing from the University of Liverpool, and I was fortunate to welcome one of them, Noel Fallows, to the program and to later direct his Master's thesis. Noel had previously received a «Diplôme de Hautes Études de Lettres et Civilisation Françaises» from the University of Nice in 1983, earned during his four years at the University of Liverpool where his B. A. in Spanish was awarded in 1984. Noel was a star student in all his studies at the University of Georgia, and his 1986 M. A. thesis was superb: "El tema de la moralidad en la picaresca española desde Martínez de Toledo hasta Cervantes."When he decided to continue his ... Read More

  • On Narrating Desire: Moral Consolation and Sentimental Fiction in
           Fifteenth-Century Spain

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Let me start by giving thanks for this opportunity to honor Sol Miguel-Prendes, recipient of La corónica International Book Award for her research work in Narrating Desire: Moral Consolation and Sentimental Fiction in Fifteenth-Century Spain [hereafter referred to as Narrating Desire]. This is an exciting moment for Iberian medieval studies. Narrating Desire is a major scholarly accomplishment, and it deserves the La corónica book award mainly because it has something new to say about fifteenth-century sentimental fiction that is relevant to advance the field, to leave certain controversies behind, and to gain accuracy in how we portray the age that anticipates the sixteenth-century narrative boom of the Spanish ... • Genres and Desires: Narrating Desire: Moral Consolation and Sentimental
           Fiction in Fifteenth-Century Spain

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Over the past decades scholars of medieval Iberian literary studies have been continually returning to what has become a central question of our work: whether the works first identified by George Ticknor and Marcelino Menéndez Pelayo as sentimental romances and as novelas erótico-sentimentales, respectively, in reality constitute a genre, and, if they do, how the formal, thematic, temporal, textual, and editorial contours of that genre might best be defined. The corpus of twenty-one short prose works on ill-fated love proposed by Keith Whinnom in 1983, which had long served as a starting point for delimiting the group and its characteristics has given way to both more porous and more limiting corpora. If there is ... Read More

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: "Como yo el syn ventura. In such a vein, the first-person narrator of Siervo libre de amor, after being rejected by his lady, explains his intellectual confusion and emotional distress to his good friend. Considering similar materials from a very different perspective from that of Sol Miguel-Prendes's circumstances, I have also been for some time musing over "la escura selva de mis pensamientos" in order to delineate the contours of the sentimental fiction tradition that bloomed in the fifteenth century in the Iberian Peninsula. An illustrious progeny of scholars in this same journal and elsewhere have helped me shape my understanding.1 ... Read More

  • Narrating Desire: Setting Penitential and Sentimental Fiction in the
Medieval and Early Modern Literary and Scholarly Canon

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Years ago, in a preliminary essay to Carmen Parrilla's edition of Cárcel de amor, in a brief exposition on the genres of medieval fiction, Alan Deyermond urged for a study of St. Augustine's Confesiones and Boethius's De consolatione philosophiae whose indirect influence on Iberian sentimental fiction had yet to be sufficiently explored. We had to wait a quarter of a century for such a study to come to fruition in Sol Miguel-Prendes's Narrating Desire, which offers an examination of moral consolation as a background to sentimental fiction. But Narrating Desire is more than an exploration of Augustine's and Boethius's influence on late medieval Iberian literature: it is a product of a lifetime of learning by a ... Read More

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: After an MLA 2021 session in which there was a very interesting discussion on the challenges different colleagues were facing when teaching questions of gender and sexuality in medieval Iberian courses, I decided to propose a future session on the topic, bridging research and pedagogy, and opening it up to the early modern period. In the continued wake of the #MeToo movement and #NiUnaMenos, new feminisms were being reassessed in their overlap or co-determination with race studies, indigenous studies, and ecological and inequality studies, where women scholars such as Verónica Gago, Silvia Rivera Cusicanqui, Rita Segato, María Galindo, etc., were being read along with Judith Butler, Rosi Braidotti, Nancy Fraser ... • Learned Women: Different Subjects, Different Questions

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: What follows is a meditation on the first class that I taught with a syllabus consisting only of women authors.1 As a medievalist specializing in the Iberian Peninsula, the design of this course required me to make some imaginative choices given the scarcity of identifiable sources that can be taught in a class with undergraduate students. It required also a questioning, along with students, of how and why texts arrive to us. It also falls outside of my comfort zone, since I tend to not commit to paper my syllabi until after I have thought them through. In other words, instead of writing about something that I have previously researched, I am writing about practice and experience. My intervention today, thus, is ... Read More

  • "Y yo callé": Speech and Silence in Spanish Golden Age Women's Life
           Writings

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In her 2009 work, A Book of Silence, the feminist theologian Sara Maitland recounts her argument with the sociologist Janet Batsleer about the nature of silence, and its relationship to oppression and freedom. Batsleer contends that silence can only be a tool of oppression; its existence is always a barrier to freedom. She writes:Silence is the place of death, of nothingness. There is no silence without speech. There is no silence without the act of silencing, someone being shut up, put bang to rights, told to hold their tongue, lost their voice. Silence is oppression and speech, language, spoken or written, is freedom.Maitland disagrees. Silence, she posits, is not always an enforced lack of speech, but can be a ... Read More

  • Rape Culture and Zayas's Fiction

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Men rape or attempt to rape women frequently in several of the novellas or maravillas of María de Zayas's Novelas amorosas y ejemplares (1637) and in the novellas or desengaños of Parte segunda del sarao y entretenimiento honesto (1647). These episodes afford insights into early modern Spanish rape culture but also entail limitations for scholarship and teaching. The following pages contain an overview of the terms and laws surrounding rape in early modern Castile; an inventory and classification of the different instances of it in Zayas's fiction; a brief analysis of how two of Zayas's maravillas illustrate contemporary beliefs around rape culture; and a consideration of two of the aforementioned limitations.

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Medieval and early modern Iberian literature is rife with misogynist tropes, portraying women as dangerous, corrupting, corruptible, and more defined and limited by their bodies than men, an idea whose continuing salience today has been studied by scholars across disciplines (Bayer and Malone, Nettleton and Watson). Bringing misogynist texts to the classroom can prove alienating, offensive, disturbing, or, even worse, irrelevant to twenty-first century students. Meanwhile, the relative dearth of literature of this period written by women can make identity-based quotas for adopting course texts difficult, especially in departments organized around a coverage model. Beyond teaching feminine embodiment, medical ... Read More

Abstract: This is the second part of an article addressing the episode of the arcas de arena in the Cantar de mio Cid, which has received considerable critical attention, especially regarding the possible anti-Semitic undertones of the incident or its possible comic implications. The first part of the article appeared in volume 49, number 2 (2021) and dealt specifically with the ethics of the Cid resorting to an elaborate ruse in which he willfully chooses to lie to Raquel and Vidas in order to obtain needed funds. It also examined the poet's construction of the episode in which the Cid deceives Raquel and Vidas to obtain a loan of 600 marcos. It examined the Campeador's motives for lying as well as possible audience ... Read More

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

The consensus among critics regarding Don Juan Manuel's Exemplo 20 of El conde Lucanor (henceworth ECL), "De lo que contesció a un rey con un omne quel dixo quel faría alquimia," is that the swindler, called a golfín, is a malhechor or salteador, what one might call a roadside bandit. However, this view seems to be incongruous with the fact that this character initiates his crookery with one hundred gold doubloons, by any standard a considerable sum, and more than one would expect this sort of marginal social figure to possess.1 He also has a very ...
           680

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Read More

  • Magic and Miracle in the Cantigas de Santa Maria

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: This essay examines miracle and magic in Alfonso X, el Sabio's (1252-84) Cantigas de Santa Maria. The miracles in the Cantigas are textual and visual representations of marvelous events attributed to the Virgin. We cannot anticipate or prevision the manifestation of a miracle, however, and the Cantigas does not depict miracles as solutions to sinful situations that might recur. A miracle impresses and turns its audiences to God by surprise that subsequently becomes faith in the Virgin Mary. Partidas 1.4.68 first defines a miracle as something we can see but whose origin we cannot identify: "Miraglo es cosa que veemos, mas non sabemos onde viene".1 The law then states that a miracle is anything that Nature cannot do ... Read More

Abstract: If a poem is only what its individual readers make it in their activity of constructing meaning from it, then a good poem will be one which most compels its own destruction in the service of its readers' new constructions. In 1567, Rodrigo el Rubio appeared before Inquisitors in Zaragoza. Charged with the possession of Arabic papers and scribal materials, the Morisco—a Muslim forcibly converted to Christianity in the sixteenth century—faced life-threatening consequences (Cardaillac 68). Since its official ban in Granada that year, Arabic in written and spoken forms had become synonymous with heresy (Root 126). Between 1568 and 1609, nearly half of the Inquisition trials in Zaragoza charged Moriscos with the ... Read More

Abstract: Nadia Altschul's second book investigating medievalism in South America is dense and invigorating, bringing together intellectual history and political economy with literary theory and cultural studies to tackle and investigate some of the most significant underlying beliefs about nation and ethnicity in Latin Americans and in Eurocentric peoples in their thinking about Latin Americans. The research behind the book is impeccable and detailed, and the book itself brings to bear postcolonial paradigms, new political approaches, and rethinking from several perspectives of various accepted beliefs. Most importantly, Altschul decides that to be taken seriously and inflect current thinking, she must engage with British ... Read More

  • Alone Together. Poetics of the Passions in Late Medieval Iberia by Henry
           Berlin (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Read More

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Veronica Menaldi's Love Magic and Control in Premodern Iberian Literature invites readers to revisit, reconsider, and reflect upon the cultural phenomena and implications of magic in some of the Iberian Peninsula's most celebrated canonical texts spanning a period of nearly 500 years. Menaldi's volume seeks to demonstrate that such a topic, hitherto understudied by modern scholars, reveals a plethora of complexities and nuances regarding medieval Iberian Christians and their cultural perceptions regarding the Other: their non-Christian neighbors. By shedding light upon these often-overlooked episodes of Iberian literature, the author successfully presents a case for dismantling and reconsidering, as stated in the ... Read More

  • Medieval Spanish Epic, Ballad, Lyric, and the Serbo-Croatian and Russian
Analogies: A Typology and Aesthetics of Oral and Related Forms by John S.
           Miletich (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In this book, Prof. Miletich collects twenty-five studies spanning more than two decades of research, mostly between the mid-1970s and the mid-1990s. Miletich's work has been widely cited by scholars of the epic tradition. Alberto Montaner, for example, in his monumental edition of the Cantar de Mio Cid cites seven of the articles that are gathered into the present volume. Matthew Bailey, for his part, references Miletich's 1986 article in the first chapter of The Poetics of Speech in the Medieval Spanish Epic. That article, "Oral and Written Aesthetics: The South Slavic Case and the Poema de Mio Cid," was a response to Alan Deyermond's 1973 study of complex patterning in the Cantar de Mio Cid (= CMC), and ... • Islam and the Arabs in Spanish Scholarship (16th Century to the Present)
           by James T. Monroe (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

The Scholarship and Legacy of James T. Monroe.
Portugal (1429-1466) by Ana M. Montero (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Historia textual y
codificación fraseológica by Pla Colomer, Francisco Pedro, and Santiago
           Vicente Llavata (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: After languishing for half a century or more, scholarship on the matter of Troy in medieval Iberia has made enormous leaps in the years elapsed since the publication of the landmark book by Juan Casas Rigall, La materia de Troya en las letras romances del siglo XIII hispano. By now, most of the main works in this tradition have been the object of studies that have clarified their sources, origins, trajectories, and relationship to each other, often as part of the production of much-needed editions: this is the case of thirteenth-century works such as the Libro de Alexandre (Casas Rigall, Libro; García López) and the General estoria (Sánchez-Prieto Borja), in which Trojan matter is part of a larger whole; and ... • Jews and Converts in Late Medieval Castile. Breaking with the Past by
           Cecil Reid (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

• The Bible and Jews in Medieval Spain by Norman Roth (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Medieval Spain hosted a flourishing Jewish community with high levels of cultural production, especially in terms of biblical exegesis. Norman Roth identifies several key figures in the development of Hebrew commentaries in medieval Iberia. Against the background of medieval Spanish history, the book provides context not only on Jewish culture vis-à-vis biblical exegetical analysis, but also identifies distinct writing practices in both Muslim and Christian Spain. The author delivers countless examples of medieval Iberian exegetes, focusing particularly on Ibn 'Ezra, David Qimhi, and Nahmanides. Of course, he comments on Maimonides and Rashi throughout the text. The first exegete of note is Abraham b. Meir Ibn 'Ezra ... Read More

  • Dead Voice. Law, Philosophy, and Fiction in the Iberian Middle Ages by
           Jesús R. Velasco (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Read More
