    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

• Narrating Desire: Moral Consolation and Sentimental Fiction in
Fifteenth-Century Spain by Sol Miguel-Prendes (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Narrating Desire: Moral Consolation and Sentimental Fiction in Fifteenth-Century Spain brings forth a new framework against which to explore the rise, techniques, and momentum of sentimental fiction. Sol Miguel-Prendes traces the origins of this uniquely Iberian genre to the ars dictaminis, Franciscan contemplative practices, and Catalan penitential consolations, which developed from the former two in the Crown of Aragon. Contrary to a general tendency amongst critics to read sentimental fictions against a courtly background and the materia de amore tradition, Miguel-Prendes highlights their Christian discursive fabric, first noticed by Deyermond. Building on her seminal article "Reimagining Diego de San Pedro's ... Read More

  • Alfonso X, the Justinian of His Age: Law and Justice in Thirteenth-Century
Castile by Joseph F. O'Callaghan (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Using the Siete Partidas as the backbone of his research, but also relying on a plethora of other documents (such as Alfonsine law codes, municipal charters, foral documents, and a variety of literary and historical texts), Joseph F. O'Callaghan, "the doyen of Castilian medieval history," as rightfully acknowledged on the book's jacket cover, details in this monograph the daily life of thirteenth-century Iberia. He considers the long-term consequences of Alfonso X's legal works on the administration of justice across the Spanish-speaking world, including the United States of America. He highlights the vicissitudes endured by this monarch in order to create a sweeping, yet coherent body of law during his reign. He ... Read More

  • Women Readers and Writers in Medieval Iberia: Spinning the Text by
           Montserrat Piera (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Read More

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

• Medieval Iberian Crusade Fiction and the Mediterranean World by David A.
           Wacks (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Medieval Iberian Crusade Fiction and the Mediterranean World estudia cómo la literatura ibérica medieval es un reflejo de las prácticas culturales mediterráneas y, en concreto, del imaginario de cruzada existente en la Península Ibérica. Read More

Abstract: Charles F. Fraker, Jr. (1923-2020) passed away in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on November 23, 2020. Professor Fraker, Carlos to those who knew him, was a member of the Spanish faculty in the Department of Romance Languages of the University of Michigan from 1965 until his retirement in 1992. He was author of several books and numerous articles on a broad range of topics in medieval Iberian literature ranging from the historiography of Alfonso X to the Celestina. An accomplished teacher and dedicated thesis advisor, he formed two generations of hispanists from among his Ph.D. students and mentored countless others in adjacent fields.Carlos joined the faculty of the University of Michigan in 1965. • Relics and Fragments

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: It was an honor to participate in the session on Heather Bamford's splendid new monograph, and to celebrate her much-deserved La corónica Book Award this year. I only wish we could have toasted her achievement in person, en carne y hueso, and in Kalamazoo! Rereading her innovative research for this occasion brought to mind a stock metaphor that has had such a powerful hold on modern philology, and that—for those of us who specialize in pre-modern Iberian literatures and cultures—is closely identified with Ramón Menéndez Pidal's Reliquias de la poesía épica española. Started during the 1930s, this scholarly tour de force went on to become a foundational study for our discipline. The eminent philologist's book ... Read More

  • A Medieval Culture of Fragments and Macrotexts

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Among the many virtues of Heather Bamford's Cultures of the Fragment is the fact that it reflects a tremendous breadth of scholarship across many different areas of our field, including jarchas, oral epic, Morisco writing, and, far from least, magic. Writing it required her to become familiar with the conventions and secondary literature of all those different areas, which is no small feat. In that sense, her book is almost an introduction to the areas of study in medieval Hispanic literature. And I use the last term purposely, because hers is a literary study at its most fundamental, an investigation into the uses and practices of writing. She is a true medievalist; she loves the handwritten word. And like all ... Read More

  • Bits and Pieces: On Heather Bamford's Cultures of the Fragment

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: We have all seen medievalism take its work with fragments into a more serious engagement with the idea and theory of them in recent years, with research groups, blogs, and collaborative websites and journals across Europe addressing medievalism's fragment(ary) cultures, but Hispanomedievalism had yet to collect pieces to compose a corpus. With this book, Heather Bamford tackles this corporal and archival incompleteness, proposing ingenious solutions to the multiple challenges and opportunities offered by this dispersion and lack of a critical thread. The five chapters, introduction, and afterword are followed by an appendix with different sections of Mohanmad de Vera's Breviario Sunni; a bibliography; and an ... Read More

           la revuelta toledana de 1449

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The seventh of the Siete Partidas, the statutory code compiled during the reign of Alfonso X of Castile (r. 1252-1284) with the intention of standardizing legal practices across the kingdom, assigns a gravity to "sins of the tongue" that is typical of medieval culture (Knickerbocker 67). The crime of injuria is defined in Title 9 of the seventh Partida:quiere decir … deshonra que es fecha ó dicha á otro á tuerto ó á despreciamiento dél. Cid (Part I)

Abstract: In the present article, I examine the lie that the Cid tells to the moneylenders, Raquel and Vidas, in order to obtain a loan near the beginning of the Cantar de mio Cid (Cantar). I explore a number of facets of the arcas de arena incident: the motivation for the Cid's deception, how the ruse is achieved, possible interpretations by its audiences, and moral/ethical implications of the lie told to the moneylenders. A forthcoming second part of the article will consider the reappearance of Raquel and Vidas in the Cantar Segundo. Fully aware that they have been cheated, the moneylenders demand repayment at that point. Although the reimbursement of the loan of six hundred marcos is not explicitly addressed by the poet ... By the time Christianity had taken root, how "Christian" were the "Christian" Iberian kingdoms' Did this change over time' Varying levels of interreligious interaction, cooperation and conflict form one part of the answer, but another is an aspect of religious life that is less accessible: the adherence by Christians to customs likely rooted in pre-Christian religious beliefs and practices.1 This article proposes that further research into these non-monotheistic religious traditions, through historiographical ... Abstract: The fifteenth-century text Embajada a Tamorlán (henceforth Embajada) chronicles the travels of a Castilian embassy led by Ruy González de Clavijo and the Dominican friar Alonso Páez de Santamaría from 1403-06.1 The party's goal was to establish diplomatic ties with the Turco-Mongol emperor, Tamerlane, also known as Timur (1336-1405), in present-day Uzbekistan. Styling himself as a second Genghis Kahn, Timur had conquered most of central Asia, and stunned Europe by defeating the Ottoman Turks during the Battle of Ankara, ending the siege of Constantinople. This staved off the end of the Byzantine Empire for another fifty years. Timur dies before an agreement is signed with the Spanish embassy, but the resulting ... Read More

Editora Regional de Extremadura, 2019 by
           William S. Kurtz (review)

Read More

  • The Seven Knights of Lara: Text, Context, and Translation by Peter J.
           Mahoney (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In his contextualization of the legend of The Seven Knights of Lara (henceforth SKL) within the Alphonsine cultural project, Peter Mahoney elucidates that King Alfonso X's use of the vernacular served to make knowledge accessible to a broader group than it otherwise had been. The Seven Knights of Lara: Text, Context, and Translation, which contains English translations of the Estoria de España's and the Crónica de 1344's versions of the SKL, serves a similar purpose. With a substantial introduction that addresses the legend's origins and offers in-depth analyses of central figures and themes, along with exceptionally readable and well-contextualized translations, Mahoney has allowed an entirely new audience to ...
