  • Introduction. The Limits of Representation in Spanish Theater

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Representational limitation has been an unremitting preoccupation in literary criticism surrounding Spanish theater. Tracing a literary genealogy of the unrepresentable text for the stage within Peninsular literature, we can go back as far as early modern theater. Seventeenth-century plays became highly regulated entertainment at social and political levels. Comedia censorship closely evaluated the performances from the very space of the corral, and theater became a guarded spectacle and a codified art where it was necessary to understand what was said between the lines, or even what was silenced, to grasp the message of a play fully. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the purpose of theater was to make ... • Pedro de Urdemalas: A Postmodern Representation of the Incompleteness of
           Being

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Pedro de Urdemalas, a comedia by Miguel de Cervantes printed in 1615, never enjoyed a long life on stage and was not produced in its day, when theater was dominated by Lope de Vega’s new comedia. The Centro de Documentación de las Artes Escénicas y la Música catalogues only five productions, one of which will be discussed in depth here.1 This production is by the JCNTC, which chose to bring the Cervantine work to the stage for the centenary of Cervantes’s death in 2016, featuring postmodern elements familiar to society today.2This article3 will apply a methodology that combines studies on adaptation and production with research on creative processes, along with theories on postmodernity and post-dramatic theater. ...

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

• The Ethics of Staging Crip Comedia

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: On June 30, 1997, the play Las gracias mohosas premiered at the Feria de Teatro del Sur in Palma del Río, Córdoba.1 The play was a production of the Centro Andaluz de Teatro (CAT), under the direction of Juan Dolores Caballero—also known as “El Chino”—and with costume design by Manuel Nieto. This performance, however, served as a mere preview to the play’s true premiere, which was scheduled to take place at the XX Festival de Almagro on July 23, which would be the grand unveiling of the production. At the press event preceding their presentation at the festival, the director of the CAT, Emilio Hernández, explained that the main purpose of the production was to unearth the dramatic works of the long-forgotten ... • The Theater of Angélica Liddell: Staging the Limit

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: Morir es nuestro origen. In a recent New York Times article, Angélica Liddell remarks, “Onstage, I’m allowed to kill myself over and over again. That possibility allows me to avoid real suicide, real madness” (Cappelle). She continues, “It has been a long time since I cut myself in my work, but I needed to create that state of irrationality. Blood is love, beauty and death—like a holy trinity.” She assures us, “I only do these cuts in front of an audience, never by myself.” Not reassuring at all. This brief introduction suggests what Liddell’s theater is about and what to expect when entering her world. It warns the ... Read More

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Read More

  • The Implicated King: Renarrating the Life of Juan Carlos I de Borbón in
Teatro del Barrio’s El Rey (2015)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In 1954, Spanish dictator Francisco Franco met with exiled Don Juan de Borbón, the heir apparent to the Bourbonic dynasty, to talk to him about his future (or lack thereof) as Spain’s king. Franco used the term “instauration” instead of “restoration” of the monarchy, thus emphasizing that he was planning to impose a Francoist monarch to assure the regime’s continuity (Preston 437). Thus continued Franco’s plans to ensure his succession and to keep la patria under his thumb even after his death. Franco had doubts even after he appointed Juan Carlos I (Don Juan de Borbón’s son) as his successor in July 1969, and the regime’s succession was far from “atado y bien atado,” despite Francisco Franco’s boastful claims ...            Late Theater

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

In a 1923 article for La Pluma, Ramón Pérez de Ayala rhetorically asks, “¿Es Valle-Inclán un dramaturgo'” (133). Although he later confirms the inherent “carácter dramático” of Ramón del Valle-Inclán’s works by listing a tragedy, a farce, and a children’s play as ample evidence for the playwright’s theatrical output, Pérez de Ayala’s unassuming question portends a significant, if not characteristic, complication of Valle-Inclán’s later theatrical works—their difficulty to faithfully adapt, direct, and ultimately perform on stage (138).1 Further, the ... • Architecture and the Urban in Spanish Film ed. by Susan Larson (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The collective and interdisciplinary work Architecture and the Urban in Spanish Film concentrates on the crucial role of urbanism and architecture through filmic medium. It demonstrates how they reshape and penetrate the individual and public spheres regardless of city dwellers’ social classes. The authors introduce their in-depth analyses of the relevant connection among ideology, modernity, popular and mass culture, monumentality, tourism, architectural and urban design, political economy, and audiovisual productions such as documentaries, newsreels, and films. The mobile eye/flâneur gaze captures and depicts the everyday life of the big cities from the very beginning of Spanish Cinema. The result is that the ... Read More

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

• Everyday Consumption in Twenty-First-Century Brazilian Fiction by
           Lígia Bezerra (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Read More

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: El propósito declarado de Biopolítica y franquismo. • Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza (The Critical Edition) by Gloria
           Anzaldúa (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: It is a rare thing these days to come across a critical edition of any text, and even less of a contemporary work that is less than forty years old. And perhaps the reason for this is that in the age of Google, we assume that whatever information we need we can readily get from Wikipedia. But that is not the point of a critical edition. Critical editions are meant to do more than merely provide us with information. Their goal is to give readers a glimpse into the inner workings of a text: what informed it and what went into its composition. Thankfully for us, then, that is what Ricardo F. Vivancos-Pérez and Norma Elia Cantú’s critical edition of Gloria Anzaldúa’s modern classic, Borderlands/La Frontera does, and ... Read More

  • Serial Mexico: Storytelling across Media, from Nationhood to Now by Amy E.
           Wright (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: A serial narrative, Amy E. Wright tells us, is not simply the episodic narration of an event, or the fragmented issuing of a pre-existing narrative, but a form of narrative production explicitly built around, and responsive to, its sequential form of distribution and consumption. In this sense, serial narratives are profoundly embedded in their milieu and, thus, their analysis calls for a grounded and contextual approach. Serial Mexico delivers in this and many regards, interested as it is on the persistence of serial, national narratives in Mexico, “across Media, from Nationhood to Now,” as the subtitle reads.Throughout Mexican national history, Wright writes,[s]erialization [has] allowed readers to conceive of ... • Lorca After Life by Noël Valis (review)

    • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: In the Introduction of this wonderful book Lorca After Life, Noël Valis asks “who was Federico García Lorca'” (3). The author of this lucid study accentuates the fact that “Lorca will forever be missing” and that in life and after life, “Lorca is curiously disembodied” (3). Not easy to grasp, just as his poetry. Elusiveness, slipperiness, “an air of incompleteness characterizes the man and his work” (4). Lorca After Life is about how the poet has been remembered and imagined and brought back to life. The repeated imaginative reimagining of Lorca’s death across various artistic forms blurs the boundaries between life and art, indicating that his death is not merely a historical fact, but has become a source of ... • Free pre-print version: Loading...

Abstract: The highly democratic nature of Mexico’s #MeToo movement—which allowed for participation from anyone with access to internet via smartphone or a computer—gave it a grassroots aura. Those who Tweeted their stories from their personal accounts did not have to wait for someone to vet or fact check their words; rather, their discourse shot across cyberspace as soon as they posted. The power of the posts lay in their ability to capture the raw testimonies of their creators, who unanimously critiqued the patriarchal system that had refused to hear their allegations in the past. As they spoke out, the women of #MeToo also challenged a biopolitics that continued to keep them on the fringes of the country’s political and ... Read More

Read More

Abstract: On August 21, 2021, Mexico commemorated the 500th anniversary of the fall of the Aztec empire. In those five hundred years, two figures—Hernán Cortés and Malintzin (also called Doña Marina and La Malinche)—have been singled out for recurrent analyses, debates and more opprobrium than respect for their roles in the conquest. With participants who led historical battles of conquest, one would expect that their participation is perceived differently depending on the ideology of the narrator. Regarding the indigenous woman known by many names, whom I shall refer to according to usage in the text under discussion,1 she has endured most of the condemnation and disapproval.
